The forum will be moving to a new domain in the near future (canonrumorsforum.com). I have turned off "read-only", but I will only leave the two forum nodes you see active for the time being.

I don't know at this time how quickly the change will happen, but that will move at a good pace I am sure.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

These images are from raw to jpeg, I have done nothing except sharpening and a ColorChecker color profile in Lr.

Want to add that although she appears to stand still, she is all over ;oP

Actually, the 85 bends a little in the corners, have quite a lot more ca and isn't nearly as sharp to my eyes, I never thought I would say that. This 50 is indeed the 50 I have been wanting since I first bought a canon f1.4 back when I had the 350d rebel.

It's the sort of lens you have your morning coffee a little faster to go shoot with. That's not a lot of lenses that can do that, bc I love my coffee, lol.

I had big plans for today, but work caught up with me and I spent most of the day indoors. But I am so eager to find out if the AF system of this lens works, so I have had to run around a bit to test that. I have done low light (1/50s, f1.4, ISO8000) shots and some outdoor shots.

I have only done f1.4 shots in Av, with single point focus, and AF set to One Shot. ISO has been set to 100 as much as possible. In some cases I hit the roof at 1/8000s, so the f-stop increased a bit. But the most interesting are of course the low light indoor shots.

And so far I am VERY pleased.

I am very close to a 100% keeper rate (if you ignore the fact that 99% of the images are rubbish). The only one I had problems with was a fairly slim glass candlestick, where it consistently focused on the plane behind it. Color, bokeh, CA and all the rest is not something I have spent much time on yet, but I have seen nothing I can´t live with. Quite the contrary.

I could have posted pages of images to confirm this, but considering the rubbish motives, I´ll limit my self to one of the Local Lion. The reason for shooting images of the cat (yes, I know all the jokes of door nobs, cats and cutlery...) the detail you can find in his fur has lots of information and it is very easy to see if you nailed it or not. The focus point is on his left eye (to your right).

That's great news Eldar!

Btw how did FoCal treat your 50? Mine was completely different with different distances. And I'm still struggling very hard to get things sharp, it's nearly there and a few times complete misses, but the kids faces are a nightmare always.

Did you find out how to calculate distance afma with the docking?

No, I have no clue on how I use the scale with the docking software. I hope someone will explain.

On the other hand, it seems the AFMA I did is OK (just one go at 2.5m, haven´t had time to do more). But I was quite concerned when I saw the spread/setting. So FoCal concluded only a Good match, but in practical terms its been phenomenal so far. I have not been shooting anything that moves yet and all shots so far is One Shot, no AI Servo.

My wife and I had an evening walk and I tried to find something to challenge bokeh. Here´s one with a bit difficult lighting conditions. I have lifted the shadows quite a bit. I had spot focus on the lower large flower.

Eldar, here some links that might help (?) and the photos look nice - look forward to seeing more and the Otus comparison when you have more time.

Thanks macguyver, but I got to this point on my own. The issue was the scale; How much do I adjust AF/step on their scale. From what I understand, I can do a FoCal on each of the distances and then I can punch in the adjustment values pr. focal length. That way I get a much more accurate AF from close to infinity. The Sigma scale has 20 steps +/-, like FoCal, so I suspect they will match fairly well. AFMA pr. lens will then be the offset to that again.

If I only had more time ....

Since this is about images, here is my Local Swan mother, taking care of her 6 eggs. I don´t remember having shot birds with a 50mm before, but there´s a first for everything.

I did try one shot tonight, and yeah, your right, it's pretty much flawless in 25600 1.4 1/125 light. It's just kids faces that are so difficult.

I'm happier with the lens for every shot.

Spent a few minutes in the USB cradle, and then shot the following… Going to zero out the setting tonight, and run it against FoCal..

Anyway, shot at f1.4, 30 minutes before sundown. Only adjustment to the shot were to tweak the exposure.

Hope to get more meaningful shots once it is all lined out.

QUESTION: I have just connected the docking for the Sigma and wanted to go through the 4-distance focus adjustment. But I realized I do not have a clue what the scales are. How did you determine how much you adjusted for each distance?

I set the camera on a tripod with a target stuck to a tower speaker
then measured from the target to the mark on the camera body that indicated the sensor plane
i set it at 0.4m 0.7m 1.5m and did a bunch of test shots with each

realised i only needed to do 1.5 so set it there and just adjusted up and down till i was happy just reviewing the SD card images in bridge after each set of images to check with the magnifier.

was pretty quick

I did a quick adjust to the 4 distances just now, and after that the lens hits MUCH better overall, so I'll be doing it properly soon. HOWEVER, did any one else experience the lens start to do a sliiiight squeekybeepy sound, like the af needed a little lubrication after adjustment??

*EDIT* There is also a bug with the 1dX that when you use the AF-ON button, but 2 out of 10 times if you push the shutter button halfway and then the AF-ON it won't focus until you release the shutter button. I hope they fix this very soon.

Does anyone know if the Sigma lenses can take advantage of all the crosstype and the dual cross points that the 1dx and 5d3 has? It seems to me that the precision and ability to track and lowlight AF is way worse with the Sigma. It just don't grab focus unless there is really good light/contrast (with faces). Any static subject is never an issue.
