The forum will be moving to a new domain in the near future (canonrumorsforum.com). I have turned off "read-only", but I will only leave the two forum nodes you see active for the time being.

I don't know at this time how quickly the change will happen, but that will move at a good pace I am sure.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Thanks macguyver, but I got to this point on my own. The issue was the scale; How much do I adjust AF/step on their scale. From what I understand, I can do a FoCal on each of the distances and then I can punch in the adjustment values pr. focal length. That way I get a much more accurate AF from close to infinity. The Sigma scale has 20 steps +/-, like FoCal, so I suspect they will match fairly well. AFMA pr. lens will then be the offset to that again.

If I only had more time ....

Since this is about images, here is my Local Swan mother, taking care of her 6 eggs. I don´t remember having shot birds with a 50mm before, but there´s a first for everything.
5DIII, 1/100s, f5.0, ISO 160
I missed this the other day and sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but I love the swan shot! I can't believe you got so close.

This is Norway, lol, we go birding with uwa's.

Here's a recent shot with the 17-40 at 17mm ;)

Nice! Great shot as well, and you must have swans with the calm Scandinavian demeanor. The last time I got that close to American swans, I was attacked, and yes, their bites actually hurt! I suppose my Norwegian heritage (my last name is Anderson) didn't buy me any professional courtesy ;)

Hehe, yeah they are easy to approach, but they can take a swing also. My youngest wanted to give it a hug, got within half a meter before it gave her the evil eye and hissed, lol. My daughter yelled at it and I had to pull her away, she wasn't very scared of it.

It would have been an interesting test for the multi coating of the 17-40 mm ;)

I take your daughter isn't very old, since she's not scared on a swan? - In Copenhagen City, swans will lie on their eggs in some of the lakes, but they pack a pretty nasty bite - not that I've tried it personally, but from time to time there are stories about teenager boys regretting that they were taunting a swan too much, getting too close for comfort.

A former cat of mine tried to take on just a duck once. All he got was a nasty wound on top of his scull. He never tried a second time - ducks could walk past him within one foot and he would pretend not even to see them.

Yeah, she's two and half years old, but my son at 4 has always been cautious, she's not, lol.

Anyway, back on topic here. I resat my lens, did FoCal AGAIN, and went out for a test, turns out FoCal was way off. I now went from a +1 at 0,4m to +11, and from -3 to +9 at Infinity, and now the whole scale seems more in tune;

+11 @ 0,4m
+17 @ 0,7m
+11 @ 1,5m
+9 @ Infinity

And even though it's foggy outside it works quite well, indoors the same. It misses from time to time, for no reason, but it's more in focus pictures now and they are also evenly sharp. I think this will be an ongoing process, as it always is, but I think I'm getting there. So cast my rubbish calibration skills aside and it's beginning to turn into a winner here. Just expect a few wtf-misses, and it seems quite dependent on the type of light and the level of contrast and light, more so than any other lens I owned.

I have not tested anymore tracking today, so that is still an open subject.

I like all the swan songs stories and funny comments, especially kaihp's cat pretending not to see ducks!

Viggo, I'm happy to hear that the lens is doing better now that you're getting it dialed in and I hope you're able to get past the technical part soon so you can get out there and just have fun shooting with it!

Thanks! Hopefully it's pretty much sorted now, fingers crossed. Went out this morning and found another swan, lol. I was going to sit down for a better angle, but ended up not seeing the eggs, and the swan was quuuuite edgy so wanted to be ready to move ;D Think it was wide open.

I just got the 50Art.
It is raining outside. And indoors I could not find a model....so I just got those 2 guys......and for once they have nothing to say....because this is an awesome lens!
Maybe not the best example but I just started to play with the lens.

I have been playing a bit more around with mine and I still get decent results. I have tried to provoke the AF, by shooting in dim light indoor (ISO25600) and outdoor in overcast and a drizzle. I have used center single point AF and AI servo. Every time I have decent contrast, AF is spot on. I shot from MFD to infinity and I believe that in those cases where AF missed, it probably would have with other lenses also.

So far this lens has a much better AF than my 35 Art, so I cross my fingers and hope it will stay like this over time. The 35 Art didn´t.
