Being able to purchase a reasonably sharp lens for $700 is amazing. Back in the 1990's, the third party lenses were poorly made, Sigma's reverse engineering of the Canon AF was a joke. Since I have the Canoon version, I am not buying, but if I wanted something for occasional use, I think its a good deal.

I wonder if this discount is related to the launch of Tamron's 100-400.
Competition is good.

Optically the Sigma and Tamron 100-400s are on a par but the Tamron is simply much better than the Sigma for IS and AF. Dustin Abbott has found the AF of the Sigma sluggish and just reported the AF tracking of the Tamron is far better and close to that of the 100-400mm II.

I have found the IS of the Tamron much better too, as others have reported, and the image in the Sigma viewfinder is very jerky. Also the Tamron has a nice tripod ring and there is no real room for one on the Sigma. To be frank, the Tamron should kill the Sigma.
