*UPDATE* I think we can file these images under the “fake” category without any doubt. Rumors.camera (via PetaPixel) has uncovered where the photos on the LCD screen of the camera came from.

It looks like Unsplash strikes again as both images on the rear of the camera come from the site. You can see each image below as well as on Unsplash here and here.

You’ll also notice on the wing of the plane that a KLM logo is easily visible and no manufacturer would put someone else’s logo in a promotional shot. The image is also shot on a Panasonic DMC-GX85.

It the future, it looks like I will have to dig a little deeper before I post leaked images from new sources. This is no slight to Photo Rumors or anyone else that believed or wanted to believe that these photos were real. It is the best faked image we may have ever seen.

Thanks to all the sleuths out there who did the dirty work in figuring all of this out.

We also confirmed that there will be no PowerShot G7 X Mark III coming ahead of CP+, but that there will be a new G series camera later on in 2018.

What I will add is that I haven’t seen this level of excitement for a Canon camera, not just a compact in a long, long time.

Every camera enthusiast around has already gone over the three “leaked” images of a Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III. A lot of people think they’re fake, a lot of people WANT them to be real and others aren’t sure.

We’ve noticed a couple of things that give us pause.

The whole design is completely new for Canon, we generally don’t see changes this big so quickly.

The “MarkIII” on the tilt screen is completely out of place.

The font on the from of the lens is different colors, the “mm”, “x2 IS” and “-” aren’t white.

[socialpoll id=”2482861″ path=”/polls/2482861″ fif=”false” width=”728″]

Canon News shares their thoughts

Powershot is not mentioned anywhere on the camera. Every powershot has powershot written on it somewhere

There’s no microphone holes

The top dial doesn’t have EC on it, which means that canon is actually removing the EC dial from the G7X Mark III.

There’s no flash switch to pop out the flash (even though looking from the top it appears like it has a flash)

The buttons don’t look “canon-like”. The icons don’t match canon “standard icons”.

There’s no record button.

There’s no click / smooth button for the dial around the lens.

The video images show 120 minutes and 60 minutes which would classify this as a video camera and not a stills camera for European import taxation. This won’t happen.

There’s no sensor on the front of the camera for the infrared remote trigger. Every Canon has that.

no PASM dial

No quick menu / SET button

We put the images through our standard PhotoShop curves testing we do on mockups and have found consistencies between these images and official Canon product photos.

If this is a fake, it’s the best fake of a camera we have ever seen. They’re usually very easy to spot with some PhotoShop curves work. It would also be the first time someone has faked a compact camera. A DSLR, a lens or a Mirrorless we’ve seen numerous times, but I don’t recall a PowerShot being faked.

Is it possible this is an early design rendering from Canon that is not yet complete? That’s possible, although it would be the first 3D design rendering we’ve ever seen.

I’ll know very soon if the PowerShot G7 X Mark III is indeed around the corner, which should help in authenticating these images.

Re: Poll: Lots of Questions About the Alleged PowerShot G7 X Mark III Images

The bigger issue is that the font on the front of the lens isn't matched to the perspective of the first 'photo', and even in concept renders, Canon don't make mistakes like that.

Re: Poll: Lots of Questions About the Alleged PowerShot G7 X Mark III Images

I would just like to point out the microphone holes in front of the hot shoe. They appear to be in the same configuration as other Canon compact cameras. Also, what is the slider switch next to the shutter button? Could that be for the pop-up flash?

The lack of physical controls doesn’t really surprise me. It could be almost entirely touchscreen driven like the original EOS M.

there was a few things i got wrong. the microphone holes and also the remote sensor, that is AF assist on the G7X series camera body.

As far as it being like the EOS-M .. true, however that makes it like the G9X which would be ergonomically downlevel from the G7X. It would be highly unusual for canon to so drastically change things from one camera to another. especially to so seriously downgrade a camera ergonomically. There's only been on case of that happening - really for ever. the 50D to 60D and that's because they added the 7D.

Not to mention there's other little things missing like the icons for far / wide around the zoom lever.

the switch could be anything .. it appears to say something like I/O which makes no sense. it could be the click / no click but it's in a mechanically challenged spot same with a flash lever - mechanically challenged.

the hotshoe is also a regular hotshoe, I can't imagine canon not putting in the EVF hotshoe if they managed to fit a hotshoe on a G7X Mark III. if that's a evf instead of a flash on the left hand side, that's even more of a drastic change, and still no switch to flip up the EVF. the slider is really in the wrong place.

I think some wish it to be true because of 4K not because of the ergonomic challenges this camera would incur for no real special reason.

I could be entirely wrong and Canon decides to entirely switch things up, but it's really looking like someone's blender pet project.

ofc ... a truly clean and modern design ... not fugly and conservative enough for a "real" Canon.

Would love both to see an EOS M1 (APS-C) in that form factor and design, of course with EF-M mount up front and a pop-up EVF like some Sonys. As well as a slightly larger, but same styling mirrorless FF camera from Canon. Instead of ugly-duckling-bump-on top-Canon design.

I was wondering how long it would take you guys to notice that the images are 'shopped.

While its very good, one can see that the lettering and the perfect cut of the shape (pic 1 for both) just dont look real.

The back shots are done well enough that It could be a 3d model- super well done. However back to the front, just look at the canon logo....suttin ain right :p

Ah well, let's see if canon show anything we actually would care about in March.

I hope, CR will learn from this posting of the faked "photo" and scrutinize future leaked Photos" in advance before posting them.

It was within the first page of the thread when people showed clearly why this photo was a fake. I guess it should be possible for CR to do the same observations before posting. Maybe it will last one day longer until the leaked photo will be shown when verified as not being a fake. So what?

Also I wouldn't leave the picture any longer on the site even if there is a remark showing it is a fake. the person/organisation behind the photo don't need to be honored this way.

regards
Frank

Photo Rumors or anyone else that believed or wanted to believe that these photos were real. It is the best faked image we may have ever seen.
I am sorry to say that is not true and you guys completely missed the obvious on this one, either you really missed it or put it out their as click bait. See I am also responding to this. you are getting more and more clicks huh?
