We have been told that a “crazy” wide angle L prime is coming and that it is an f/1.4L, however the focal length was not given. This does happen from time to time, as people can get a bit coy as to not give themselves away.
The term “wide angle” was used, and sometimes we can have different definitions of “ultra wide angle” and “wide angle”, so I'm just calling it how is was presented to me.
No date or timeline was given for an announcement.
Canon has officially said that they wanted to release 6 to 8 RF lenses every year, and we are nowhere near that for 2024. So I think we're going to get a bunch of new lenses to close out 2024. As reported multiple times (and pretty much confirmed by Canon), we'll get the RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM and RF 50mm f/1.4 VCM (Instant preorder for me).
RF Lenses Announced in 2024
- Canon RF-S 3.9mm f/3.9 STM Dual Lens
- Canon's RF-S7.8mm F4 STM Dual Lens for Apple (I'm not sure if this counts)
- Canon RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM
That's not exactly an earth shattering list of new lenses in 2024. Sure the RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM was a very nice release, but the RF-S VR things? I didn't feel a lot of burning excitement for those.
I will be annoying some people this week to get some clarity on new lenses this year, it just doesn't feel that 3 VCM lenses will be it for 2024.

But whatever "crazy" this will be, it will be inspiring to see what others can do with it :)
Or to the new 70-200 ? You are not talking about those anymore ? Are they still coming this year ?
Now that lens is in stock everywhere but I’m still waiting for my 200-500F4
A 12mm prime would be unusual but its usefulness is limited especially with the RF10-20/4 already available. f1.4 would be 4 stops more light but vignetting would be fierce I think.
I would prefer to match existing 14mm options available on E mount rather than halo expensive lenses. A 14/1.4 or smaller and cheaper 14/1.8 with nicely controlled coma would be welcome for astro landscapes.... or if Sigma brought out a EF mount version withmanual focus then there would be a lot of happy campers adapting them.
But I don't know if there is a big enough market for such a lens since Canon hasn't released any really fast primes wider than 24mm in the past.
I've been using Sigma 14mm 1.8 for EF, and I've been wishing for a native RF lens be it 14 or 16mm and f1.4 or 1.8
Hopefully a few grams lighter than Sigma
Could it possibly be the motorized 14mm T/S ?
Wouldn't this be crazy enough if it were an f/1,4?
That was my first thought as well, but then I saw the f/1.4L part of the rumor. I guess a TS-R 14mm F1.4L lens would indeed by crazy! :p
