If there’s an F mount, expect an EF mount.
Apparently we can expect new lenses to be announced by Sigma.
- 10-20 f/2.8
- 70-300 OS
- 70-200 f/2.8 OS
All three lenses make a lot of sense for Sigma. Canon…. a new 10-22? :)

This is some exciting news depending on the price. If it is $1100 or below that 70-200mm is in my bag…
The 10-20 sounds like a response to tokina. I don’t know how well it would perform with that zoom range though.
I hear nikon is going to come out with the 5d2 killer. A d700x with d3x 24mp specs. Priced around 3k. I don’t think it will be at pma but maybe in the near future. Sounds very tempting.
There will definitely be a D800 with a 24mp sensor. I’d say expect it sometime in 2010.
if the 10-20 matches the 11-16 (tokina) in performance then it sounds like a winner… though I personally dont really care if its 2.8 would rather have an F4 that rocks wide open than a 2.8 that needs to be stopped down to be acceptable.
what does this have to do with the new sigma lenses?
Nikon won’t come with that cam for at least a year…
And as for 5dII killer – the ISO performance on the the D3X isn’t as good as the 5DII so they’d have to do some more work on that chip to get it to really kill – and with nikon it will be more than 3000. Everything they make is 20 percent more than canon on average…
that is one of the smartest things I’ve ever heard…
I would love for the lens companies to focus on making lenses that perform super wide open…
I buy a 2.8 to shoot at 2.8 – not 5.6
great comment
A Sigma 10-20mm f2.8 in an *EF* mount?! Am I misreading?
If not, consider one sold, especially if it’s an EX+HSM configuration; I almost don’t care how much it costs. Unlike maxs, I’ll definitely take the 2.8; even if most of the time I’m shooting at 5.6 or 8, give me the option to spend a little more time in post. ;-)
But why do I suspect I’m misreading, and this will be an EF-S mount instead? Which, sadly, brings me back to the 12-24 I’ve been considering for a versatile wide lens.
I assume the 10-20 expected to be EF-S?
I would guess EF-s… otherwise Im affraid this thing might turn out to be dog… 10mm f2.8 on FF… dont mean to be a pesimist but Sigma?….
It won’t be EF-S. Sigma doesn’t do/hasn’t reversed engineered EF-S. It will be an EF mount lens, but almost certainly will be designed for APS-C sized sensors. IOW, it will be like the current 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX HSM, which will mount and can be used on Full Frame and APS-H cameras, but will vignette badly due to the reduced image circle size.
Agreed. Nikon will have learnt their lesson from the D700/D3 releases. We should expect a long lag between D800 and D3x.
If the Sigma 10-20 performs well with better close focusing distance than the Tokina 11-16, I will most certainly purchase it.
New lenses from sigma….. Nikon w/ their new 35mm……. Canon where are you?
sound asleep, resting on it’s laurels…
unless 10-20 2.8 is ff lens
70-300 OS? will it better than 70-300 IS USM?
They are now in the same state that Nikon was in before the release of their groundbreaking D300/D3 combo.
Agreed – you’re both right.
Take, for example, the old Sigma 14mm f2.8. I love the lens since it is by far not as expensive as Canon’s 14mm f2.8 L-lens (I bought the Sigma used for 400 EUR).
But as a matter of fact, at f2.8, the Sigma is so darn soft that there’s usually no point in using it wide open. Still I love the lens for it’s price-vs-benefit ratio, but I’d love it just as much if it was a 14mm f4 with perfect sharpness at f4.
All Sigma Lenses use the EF-mount. Even if they’ve been computed for crop-sensors only, they use the EF-mount. That’s probably just a marketing scam or a way of reducing production-cost.
For example the old Sigma 10-20mm f4-5,6 has an EF-mount but if you use it on a 5D or other full-format camera, you’ve got heavy vignetting in all four corners. The effekt is so strong, it makes the lens absolutely unusable with full-format cameras.

No
It will be a upgrade to the cheap (junky) sigma 70-300 APO
and NO WAY THE 10-20 WILL BE FF!
it’s an upgrade to the 10-20 DC(=APS-C)
Don’t understand why sigma have not added OS to their long primes, the 500 and 300 are begging for it, especially considering Canons price hikes. 500 f4.5 with OS would be a killer lens! Whats the point in a new 10-20?
A 500mm OS would be a killer lens for a handful of people; a 10-20mm f/2.8 would be a killer lens for a whole lot more people(*). It would also compete with the Tokina 11-16mm offering in filling a gap in Canon’s line-up (no fast UWA zoom for APS-C).
(*) On “www.pixel-peeper.com” there are 2,779 images taken with the current Sigma 10-20mm and only 54 taken with the 500mm f/4.5.
produce something like 70mm macro 2.8 OS or 30 1.4 II for ff
will be better choice
produce something like 15-70mm f/4 HSM for APS-C
will be better choice
damn it… Im tiered of waiting… if Canon will not make it maybe Sigma will… I want my 10-1000mm F0.7 IS HSM… yep, that the lens for me… along with an H1 to mount it on for transport :D
produce something like 10-800mm f/1.0 HSM for APS-C
will be better choice
hmm… 800mm F1…. thats almost 32 inches… from what I remember we took up the entire bed of my buddy’s truck with his 20″ telescope so 32″…yikes…. granted 1000 f.7 is more that 56in which pretty much rules out the H1 and makes this movable by tank or semi only…hmmm, something to that, remove the turett from a tank and replace it with a killer lens…. sorry, got lost in day dreaming :P
But there still is the advantage of having a brighter viewfinder and better AF (the cross-points) with f/2.8. At the same time, I agree with maxs – I like shooting wide open too.
Yeah 10mm on a FF you need so much front glass that you see the tripod legs in your frame.
I think Leica makes one. It comes mounted to a restored Panzer at n/c.
Here you go, 10mm for FF
http://nikonrumors.com/2009/02/16/af-s-nikkor-10-18mm-f4-g-ed-n.aspx
(I still don’t think sigma will release such a lens [10-20 FF] sometime soon…)
lol…. I guess that adds a whole new meaning to “built like a tank” :D
Wow. I guess anything’s possible. I just remember the size of this front element and thought “good luck”:

I noticed that the 15-30 , 17-35 & 20-40 (i know it has been gone 4 a while now) are no longer on the Sigma UK website. Only wide zoom available for a FF Camera is 12-24.
Also 24-60 is gone.
What about the release of the Canon 10-22? I really don’t think it will happen because that lens is just almot perfect, not too much things to change.
There are a few 15-30s still floating around and going for very cheap – £200 from BristolCameras. Sure – it flares, it’s not as sharp as a most L lenses, and it’s AF motor sucks, but for £200 who can complain?
The Sigma 12-24 is a great lens, if you are looking for a full-frame extreme wide angle lens. I just got it with my 5DII, and I can say it is a keeper.
The ability to go from insane wide to modest wide is something that I won’t ever leave out of my bag.
It’s about time. Is there any word on a release date?
