Predicted Canon RF-S & RF Lens Releases In 2025

Canon will continue to broaden the RF and RF-S lens lineup in 2025 with some exciting new lenses for APS-C and Full Frame cameras.

It looks like 2025 is going to be a big product launch year for Canon, especially for the APS-C line of cameras. We’re going to get the Canon EOS R50 V and Canon EOS RV sometime soon. We’re also expecting an updated Canon EOS R7 later this year.

With those sorts of APS-C cameras on the horizon, we’re going to be getting at least 3-4 new RF-S lenses.

We also expect the Canon EOS R6 Mark III to be the big full-frame camera announcement for photographers and videographers alike. Though we do think that there is something else cooking besides just the much rumored “retro” camera.

New Canon RF-S Lenses in 2025

We are going to get at least 2 RF-S Power Zoom lenses for the new segment of APS-C cameras. We expect wide-angle and a standard zoom pair of PZ lenses.

We are also expecting a new fast prime lens for the RF-S mount. I don’t think anyone would be upset to see an RF mount version of the much-loved EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM.

Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM

Also rumored is an RF-S f/2.8 constant aperture zoom. We think it’ll be something like the EF 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. We’re told that it’ll start wider than the 17mm of the EF version of the lens. Going to 15mm would give the RF-S lineup a 24-70mm 35mm equivalent lens.

We will hopefully be able to update the lenses that are coming in the very near future, for the moment we must be somewhat ambiguous.

Read between the lines a bit.

New Canon RF Lenses in 2025

There have been a few lenses which have been rumored for as long as I can remember. Everything based on our experience says they are coming, but none of them have come to market yet. It has been frustrating.

The autofocus tilt-shift lenses really need to come to market. One of Canon’s strengths in the EF days was their tilt-shift lenses. They are the sort of lenses that will bring certain types of photographers into the system.

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM 1.4x

The last one on the list……

  • Canon TS-R 14mm f/4L
  • Canon TS-R 24mm f/3.5L
  • Canon RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM (Perhaps with a TC)

Canon has said in the past that they want to release 8 or so lenses a year for the foreseeable future. If everything mentioned here comes to market in 2025, that only leaves one or two more lenses that could be announced if Canon holds true to those plans.

New “Big White” Prime Lenses

We don’t think Canon will replace their RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF 600mm f/4L IS USM this year, and Canon will wait until early 2026 at the earliest to do that. 2026 is a World Cup and Olympic year. They always makes a splash for those events.

Is An Astrophotographer Dream Lens Coming?

We do think we’re finally going to see a fast ultra-wide L prime lens. The astrophotography world has been asking for one for years now. We have seen the patents for these designs and believe this is the year we’re going to see. We have been told one will come in the 2nd half of 2025 from a source with mixed success.

In Closing

There are some known truths in the report above, but we can’t write what some of the exact products will be at this time. This is normal, and by now, we should all be aware of how closed Canon has become over the last few years when it comes to leaks.

There are going to be a dozen or so desires in the forum thread attached to this post, and a few of them that are going to be mentioned are likely to come one day. Well, the desires that fit the laws of logic and physics.

However, Canon must put some focus into their coming revamped APS-C camera lineup and that means new and very good RF-S lenses have to be launched with cameras like the EOS R50 V, EOS RV and EOS R7 Mark II.

Just to put some good vibes out there. We’d love to be surprised by a photography focused lens or two. A Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM anyone? Even if an RF 28mm f/1.2L (oooh!) USM would be a much better lens to make (if you know, you know).

  1. TS-R 14mm, immediate preorder. Fast ultra wide prime, maybe (Canon's history of managing coma and astigmatism is wide lenses leaves me skeptical, so I'll wait for actual reviews). Hoping for an RF 600/4 II in 2026.

    That's right!
The 24mm TSE II brought me into the Canon system, since, like the 100-400mm, it was noticeably better than the Nikon equivalent.
The 5 D III was my first Canon, also my first digital, though I preferred the Nikon D 800 (?) since I had owned a few Nikon film cameras.
    A choice (5 D III) I've never regretted...
  3. Can’t forget the RF Fisheye, that’s one of the top remaining EF to RF upgrades that hasn’t materalized.

    I haven't heard a thing in a long time.

Long time dude.. I hope all is well.
  4. Reading the list, it really comes to mind Canon has quite some work left with the RF/ RF-S lineup. Given the expectations...
...of about eight lenses a year
...the glaring need for new APS-C lenses
...the almost certain one-two surprise lenses (RF-S 7.3mm or whatever it was...)

it is most likely it'll take two or three years until the line-up is "complete". Therefore, I´d lower my expectations for some lenses to be released soon, because more than eight lenses are probably not in the books.

    Begs the questions:
    1. what are the most glaring needs for Canon?
    2. What lenses are most likely to be released soon?

Given this article and some rumors, I´d guess:
    1. RF-S PZ UWA lens
    2. RF-S PZ standard zoom lens
    3. FF L lens to be announced with the R6mkiii
--> since the R6 has always been advertised as a great camera in low light, I'll go with RF 12mm F2 (or 14mm or 16mm...whatever)
    --> or RF 20mm F1.4 VCM
    4. RF 70-180mm F2.8 STM (or similiar)
    5. TS lens
    6. RF-S 32mm F1.4
    7. RF surprise as always --> first ever 1:1 macro zoom halo lens :)
    8. RF-S zoom with constant f2.8 aperture

    2026:
    1. RF 200-500mm F4 L
    2. RF 400mm L
    3. RF 600mm L
All announced along the R3mkii ;)
    4. RF UWA PZ lens
    5. UWA for RF-S
    6. RF 85mm F1.4 VCM
    7. RF 24-70mm F2 L
    8. surprise lens

    2027:
    1. the missing TS lens
    2. the long macro
    3. RF 35mm F1.2 (yes, I think Canon will take care about the video-focused lenses first)
    4. RF 70-150mm F2 L
    5. consumer grade supertele --> 250-750mm in the style of the RF 100-400mm
    6. RF-S UWA zoom with F2.8 (they are building a trinity)
    7. portrait prime for RF-S
    8. surprise, surprise

    For 2024, I´d personally hope for a
    1. RF 24-70mm F2 L
    2. RF 20mm F1.4

Have you heard any rumors about a Tele zoom in the f/2.8 series to make a trinity with the already released 16-28 and 28-70 ??
  6. <quote>A Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM anyone? Even if an RF 28mm f/1.2L (oooh!) USM would be a much better lens to make (if you know, you know).</quote>

    I don't know, and I would still have a 35 1.2 first :D
Should they make a 28 1.2, I would be interested in it tho
  7. Suppose, the typo could be corrected:

    EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

    ;)
I'm still out here hoping for an RF version of my favorite EF-S 15-85. So much better than the standard kit, and the 17-85, allowing me to get wider than a 24-105L on ASP-C, while still having some reach on the long end. I am still holding onto my SL1 because of this lens.
  8. ...the glaring need for new APS-C lenses
Is there one? I don’t see it. Maybe a fast zoom (there was one for EF-S but not for EF-M). Maybe a fast prime (there was one for EF-M but not for EF-S). In EF-S days the ILC market was 90% APS-S, today it’s around 75% APS-C.

Canon is definitely placing an emphasis on more affordable full frame, high-quality lenses. For example, the R8 + RF 28-70/2.8 is cheaper and far more capable than the 7D + 17-55/2.8.

So I’m not sure we will see a set of high-end crop lenses from Canon. But hey, I was completely wrong about them discontinuing the M series in favor of crop R series bodies, so we will see what actually happens.
  9. Canon still hasn’t released an RF 85mm f/1.4.

Additionally, they urgently need a new standard f/2 zoom. They’ve lost the lead here—Sony now has four options, all of which are lighter.
  10. Fingers crossed one of those new RF-S lenses is finally the patented 15-60mm f/2.8. Third party lenses have beefed up our ecosystem nicely, but we're still missing a bright stabilized general-purpose zoom starting at a 24mm full frame equivalent.

Also need some more pancake primes to go alongside those upcoming compact bodies. Something between 16 and 28mm, say perhaps a 22mm f/2?
  11. TS-R 14mm, immediate preorder.
This would be an interesting lens but adding AF would make it even more expensive and niche.

Fast ultra wide prime, maybe (Canon's history of managing coma and astigmatism is wide lenses leaves me skeptical, so I'll wait for actual reviews).
Agreed... If Sigma/Sony can make good lenses in this space at very reasonable prices then I would hope that Canon does the same.
The fastest (as far as I know) was the EF14/2.8ii from 18 years ago was expensive (~USD2100) and not great for coma.
Frankly, manual focus and EF mount should be simple and good for this niche.

Hoping for an RF 600/4 II in 2026.
Has there been any RF lens updated yet in the 7 years since the RF24-105/4 came out?
  12. I haven't heard a thing in a long time.
Long time dude.. I hope all is well.
The EF8-15/4 is definitely a small niche but may have brought shooters into the ecosystem as there was nothing like it from 15 years ago until Nikon did 8 years ago.
Only Canon would know if they sold more than their TS-E lenses but both are pretty niche.
As niche as the 11-24/4 or the 10-20/4?
