B&H and Adorama received enough to clear large preorder lists. A midsized US retailer only received 50% of their preorder list and a large UK retailer only received 25%.
Sort of begs the question: What fraction of (US) sales of Canon's high-end products come from B&H and Adorama?
In addition to this preferential treatment, B&H and Adorama both have advantages that other USA retailers can't compete with. In addition to dominant size, they both offer substantial discounts to their customers. Adorama offers 5% off and B&H covers the full sales tax hit, which can be greater than 10%! It's a non-trivial 7% in my state. Manufacturers seem to have no problem with Adorama's and B&H's essentially explicit discounts deviating from their MSRP.
As much as I would like to support smaller retailers, the incentive to take these sizable discounts (I've gotten as much as $840 off of a purchase), is too much for me to ignore. I placed my R5 M II order with B&H Saturday and should receive my R5 MII tomorrow (Wednesday) along with most of the buyers who woke way too early on the release date to be at the front of queue. :)
Smaller stores are being driven under by the likes of Walmart, Sam's, and Costco just as B&H and Adorama is doing to the neighborhood camera store.
That's the whole point of preorders... allocating where things are needed. B&H and Adorama shouldn't have a mound of stock when smaller retailers don't. At least the Canon USA store doesn't have stock. There are some pissed off people this morning....
There will firmware update is coming for a bunch of cameras for compatibility. I think the LP-E6NH cameras are likely.... beyond that I wouldn't be surprised if those cameras don't get it.
Voltage isn't the big change in the battery. The LP-E6P has a max discharge rate of 6A, the LP-E6NH is about 2.1A.
They may actually be the same voltage battery, there can sometimes be shenanigans with charge voltage and output voltage. Think Dewalt vs Milwaukee. Now I don't think there is any marketing reason to play with voltage claims on a camera battery. Maybe that's the next fanboy frontier!
The batteries will be dissected this week.
In short Canon is not Apple, which can 95% of the time have a successful launch and get product at least to Day One pre-orderers on launch day. And every one else will get a specific time range.
I ordered from Canon this time within minutes of the announcement starting. Still on backorder. Just spoke w/ Canon and they have no idea when they’ll start shipping orders - or at least mine. Typical Canon.
Well, Apple's distribution and how they sell their wares is completely different than Canon.
Yes...but it will require a firmware update.
I first say the reference to firmware update on B&H Q&A...but this is from Canon USA's website, when you click on the battery on the R5 II page.
I've picked up a LP-E6P battery just to test out on my R5. I am very curious if the higher amperage/volt battery will help with things in the R5, like the FPS decreasing with LP-E6NH battery charge.
