The next full-frame camera from Nikon is going to be the Z7 III. The Z7 line has been all about resolution at an affordable price. The current Nikon Z7 II uses Sony’s 45.7MP image sensor, but that will change with the next iteration of the line.
Canon’s top resolution image sensor ever was the 50.6MP that appeared with the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R. As you know, the highest resolution sensor that Canon produces the 45MP we see in the EOS R5 and EOS R5 Mark II. Though they are completely different sensors.

Canon appears to be choosing speed of their sensors over resolution. Things like framerate and readout speed can be affected by the higher number of pixels you pack into a sensor.
There are a lot of Canon shooters that apparently want a sensor well above 60MP, but we’re not sure if Canon has any near-term plans to go all-in on resolution. We think if they did, they would need to go well beyond 60MP to segment it away from the 5 series of cameras.
It doesn’t seem likely at this point.
Nikon is going ahead with a higher resolution Z series using an image sensor from TowerJazz.

The TowerJazz Image Sensor
The latest rumors about the Nikon Z7 III seem to suggest that Nikon is going to be using a 67MP sensor made by TowerJazz. Nikon China accidently leaked an image from 2022 showing Nikon prototyping the sensor from TowerJazz. It was deleted soon after.

Nikon currently uses TowerJazz image sensors in the Z50 II, Z30 and Zfc. This looks like it’ll be the first time Nikon uses TowerJazz in a full-frame camera. Sony makes a 61MP that some thought would appear in the next Z7 series.
Since Nikon doesn’t manufacture their own sensors, it’s probably a good idea to do it differently than simply using the 61MP sensor that we see in the Sony a7R V.

Summary
For customers that want more pixels aren’t buying a 67MP camera for speed in frame rate or readout speed. While the Nikon Z7 III will shoot 8K video and have some good video specs, that’s probably not the target market for the camera. Photographer first focused cameras are a rare thing these days, but more resolution is probably one area that they can target us.
Brands like Leica, Hasselblad and Fujifilm do have products that focus on photographers first. Canon? It’s pretty much the EOS R1 that fits the photographer first bill, but it is also well specced for video, but we don’t think people buy an R1 for that purpose alone.
There are some very interesting cameras coming from other brands. It would be cool to see Canon get on the train, but we’ll have to wait and see how that plays out.
