We reported the possibility of 2 tilt-shift lenses for PMA, one of our new sources has come through if this is true.

A pair of Tilt Shift lenses?
As we reported a few days ago, there’s a chance there will be two tilt-shift lenses launched for PMA.

Apparently a German forum has picked up on that.

  • OMG TS-E 17mm!! Is there still a reason to tilt??
    and what kind of speed would cost €2k+ per piece??

  • You can make that a CR4 (at least). The guy that posted the message is owner of an official Canon store, and a quite renowned one.

    I hope that’s not it for new lenses at PMA. TS-Es, while certainly great fun, are not exactly on my shortlist, in particular at that price point. ;-)
    I guess I am not alone with that opinion. EF 50 1.4 II or EF 100-400 II, or better yet, an EF-S 30someting, or just about anything a bit more mainstream, please? Canon? Helloohoo?

  • I second that this is _at least_ a CR4. Martin Achatzi is one of the most wellknown Canon-Dealers in Germany’s dslr-scene. If Martin says there will be a 17mm f4, in April, there is most certainly going to be one.

  • Very interesting.

    I must say, even though my top lens would be a 24-70 replacement (IS, better optics, please :)) a 17mm TS-E lens is pretty cool sounding. As someone with only an 1.6x crop camera (40D) a wide(ish) tilt-shift is something I could use.

    I think the real questions are:

    Did they add AF (even if it is only when non-shifted/tilted)?
    Did they weather seal? (if that’s even possible!)
    What is the max aperture? f/2.8? f/4? Who knows?

  • Whilst neither of these would be on my shopping list, I think from Canon’s point of view it’s a pretty good move.

  • MUCH impressive.

    Now the only thing I request to Canon is:

    – 3D DSLR or 5D MK II if no 3D possible with FULL MANUAL CONTROL in Movie Mode…

    – updated 24-70 f/2.8L (with IS?) with macro capability

    – Some other lens people may buy in mass

    That will make LOT of sales…. specially considering Nikon is (much) more expensive (on lenses too), has less range of lenses and still doesn’t have a Full Frame with Movie/Video mode (thus, not taking advantage of the low noise FF sensor for Move).

  • AF and weather sealing are pretty much irrelevant for a TS-E lens, especially now when you can use live view to very accurately manually focus such a lens

  • Everyone is going to have a different opinion regarding which lenses Canon should upgrade, but if you’ve had any experience with the TS-E 24mm you will know it is not the strongest performer. In fact, of all the current L lenses, it’s the weakest of the bunch IMO. It’s not particularly sharp and it has significant CA issues that are difficult to fix when shifted. Apparently the Nikkor equivalent is excellent (and so it should be being nearly two decades newer), and given the recent Nikon FF offerings, especially the D3X, it’s a lens that absolutely must be redesigned by Canon in order to remain competitive. Given the new 24 f/1.4 and other recent lens revisions (14mm, 70-200 f/4 IS), it should be great.

    But if this 17mm is true, and it appears to be… then Canon is upping the ante on Nikon and their recent t/s lenses. Rather than just pulling back to even and calling it a day, it’s a serious motivator to keep pros with Canon. Hopefully this lens will be a Zeiss rival in overall quality.. time will tell.

    It would be nice to see the TS-E 45mm redesigned to address significant CA issues.

  • 17 is great, but when 17 coming will renew 24 tilt be good idea? it will be a marketing nightmare, these two lenses are too similar to one another.

  • That’s the focusing distance in meters…

    Going from 0.25, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.7, 1, 3, and then infinity. (The green text is it in feet)

    The photos look too complicated to be faked. If they are fakes, thats some amazing work.

  • On the German forum, Martin Achatzi added:

    “Randscharf auch total verschwenkt bei offenster Blende, kein roter Bereich mehr.”

    Translation: Sharp to the frame edges even with full shift at maximum aperture. There’s no longer a red zone on the tilt/shift scales.

    It’s interesting to see in the photos of the two lenses that there doesn’t appear to be a tilt scale on the 24mm while there is on the 17…

  • id also like to see the 45 redesigned… as an L and as a macro… i think that would be a one lens killer on FF

    Vincent Laforet killed it with the T/S, anything else from this point on will just be an imitation of his work.

  • Yeah, because everyone buys a t/s lens to reproduce a gimmicky look.

    Nevermind people who want to shoot architecture with correct perspective or any sort of work where increasing the apparent depth of field is desired.

  • i’m extremely excited by these two lenses, and being an architectural photographer want both of them, just need to get a lot of work to pay for them
