Hi there,

I am sort of in the same boat, old(er) iMac, so no USB 3.0 (albeit I do have thunderbolt) and I was looking for a CF card reader, FireWire 800 preferable. I heard that the company who makes the circuit boards for FireWire (they apparent supplied everyone!) when into liquidation, and that's why the availability dried up. No one could be bothered to look into making them again, as USB 3.0 was pretty mainstream.

However, as I stated, I am on a mac... I am running Mountain lion, and I can confirm, that a little German company called DeLOCK make a CF FireWire 800 card ready, that works very well. I have been using it for about a year now, and very happy with it.

Canon USA has a link posted for April 30th. I'm waiting at least until then, they still might be tweaking it.

I complete understand, and respect your comment... I guess I'm just far too impatient. As as an early adopter of the camera in the first place, I'm quite happy to be a Guinea pig for it, if that is the case. I just wanted to give people the option, as I was hunting for a link myself.

Updated fine... I'm not a video guy, so I can't comment about the HDMI out, but I wanted this to speed up the AF assist lamp issue... and it does seem a lot snappier (excuse the pun).
I'm a much happy camper atm. I'll have to wait until I'm in work later today to really walk it through it paces, but I'll let everyone know how I get on

So I've found a link to the new firmware... I'm not claiming any responsibility for this, but other people on the site seem to have gone through with it, with good results. Apparently someone got a copy of the new firmware directly from Canon, on a memory stick, when they sent in there camera.

Let me know how you fair with it, if you do decide to try it

Ok, thanks for the reassurance... I just suddenly panicked at the thought of having security take my kit off me. I think we can all appreciate how upsetting that would be!
But as Wickidwombat suggests, maybe I take the batteries out, just to be on the safe side
I'm flying today, and back in two weeks, so will update with how it goes

Hi all, we have an important update on this topic. Thanks again for your feedback on our Forum.
 
Canon has confirmed that, depending upon the shooting conditions, it may take slightly longer for the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X digital SLR cameras to acquire focus when using the Speedlite's AF Assist Beam, compared with that of the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS-1D Mark IV digital SLR cameras using the Speedlite's AF Assist Beam. We are developing a firmware update to enhance the focusing feature for the EOS 5D Mark III and the EOS-1D X. The schedule for release of this firmware update will be announced shortly.

We've just heard from Canon, over on their own forum, that they have acknowledged the problem, and a fireware fix should be in the pipeline

Please oh please take a look at the AF beam assist focus.
