"The focusing speed of the updated hybrid phase and contrast-detect design remains unchanged, which unfortunately means that it still lags behind current mirrorless cameras from Sony, Olympus and Panasonic."

Well done Canon for the LACK of progress in this critical department. Wow! I am totally floored.

so, we have a newly developed sensor that is:
- slow in hybrid AF (just like the previous one)
- same MP count from 2009
- we don't know the IQ, but I don't hope too much

I'd be curious what has Canon developed for years... are they really _that_ lame?

I hope I will have my 70D before the summer ends.

according to CW latest info, 70D will only be announced later, but before summer. it may only be available in stores this autumn.

disappointing...

I am intrigued by the "ISO range is 100-25600" spec.  If that is not an expanded range, it would probably be a new sensor.  The 60D lists its 18MP sensor range to 6400 (12,800 expanded) and uses a Digic 4.  If the 25600 is expanded, then it could be the same sensor just with better noise reduction applied via Digic 5...

look, it's simple.

they got the same old 18MP sensor from 2009 and put some AF points on it, put this together with the DIGIC5 and they created 650D. then, they created EOS-M, this is the same as 650D. then, as too much sensors were produced and 650D is outdated and EOS-M didn't work fine, they created just another body for the same old sensor, this EOS-B. hopefully they will get rid of the stock of this sensor.

they are delaying the new ASP-C sensor (70D, 7D2, then 700D) because they want to sell as much from this ancient sensor as they can.

it sounds like 70D is going to have the same old ASP-C sensor and ASP-C sensors will only be developed for Rebels and EOS-M...

it wouldn't be a problem to produce only full frame for DSLRs but FF cameras are very expensive (entry level starts above $2000), and the 1.6x crop factor is something many people like in ASP-C.

A serious rumor imho isn't a rumor anymore - Canon simply is very secretive and never leaks any information on purpose to generate interest or divert attention from the competition (unlike other large companies), a habit that falls in line with them being a candidate for the "most conservative company of the world" award.

I meant that all rumors leaked more than 1-2 weeks before camera release couldn't be taken seriously.

these are just rumors... just check all the rumors from 2012, mostly the same as this: nothing more than speculation... I don't really understand why this is a CR2...

serious rumors will only surface a few days/weeks before releasing the new camera...

7D started in 2009Q3. 550D followed in 2010Q1, 600D in 2011Q1 and 650D in 2012Q2. 60D started in 2010Q3, 60Da in 2012Q2. 6 cameras with the same sensor.

life cycle of the xxD was 1.5 years for 10D-20D-30D-40D, 2 years for 50D, and 60D is on the market for 2.5+ years.

as after 7D, the next rebel after 7Dmk2 will get the new sensor. it will probably be the 700D or the 750D.

assuming that the xxD life-cycle continues like this, 70D with the same old sensor will be very outdated in 2014, but we'll have to wait till early 2016 for the 80D (2.5 years from 2013Q2).

do you still think canon will put the same old 18mp sensor in 70D?

If that ISO rumor is right then Canon will be kicking themselves. I'm not buying this rumor. Can't imagine the lower lever camera (T4i) having better ISO performance than their higher counterpart.

Good grief, it's about usable iso settings, what good would 6d-like settings do if all you get is noise? If you are so desperate for noisy pictures, just shoot @iso12800 on crop and underexpose -3ev...

... I'd be happy if Canon would end the marketing race in both the mp and iso setting category but just release sensors with more dr and 2 stops better iso than now.

Yea, but marketing is everything. I rarely took shots above ISO 1600, but an option of very high ISO is welcome for rare situations. But, if 70D's ISO 6400 is much better than 650D's e.g. ISO 1600, then I don't care how it's called:)

I don't think this spec can be taken seriously, because the spec for 70D/7Dmk2 a few weeks ago from a Japanese newspaper differed in both sensor resolution (24MP?) and ISO (25600?). I'd take that more seriously.

EOS 70D - old sensor tech
7D Mark II - new sensor tech

I agree, 7D mk2 should have a new sensor because with an old but upgraded sensor, it wouldn't be saleable.

700D will be announced this summer, with the same old sensor 550D had, it wouldn't also be saleable.

Think about 70D... its life cycle is 2-2.5 years. Who would buy it in 2014, especially after the 700D if it would have the same old sensor?

My bet:
- Canon will release the new, ~25MP ASP-C sensor this year, with more focus points on the sensor compared to 650D
- 7D mk2 will get this sensor with a DIGIC5+/dual DIGIC5/+ processor
- 70D will get this sensor with a single DIGIC5 processor (maybe 5+ but I don't think so), just like 650D has
- 700D will get the new sensor
- 7D mk2 will be the "king" of ASP-C, with a performance like 5D mk3, with enhanced movie AF but no flip but touch screen (not sure)
- 70D will be a "bigger" 700D with some extra functions (bigger buffer, better battery, faster shutter, etc) with enhanced movie AF and flip/touch screen, maybe movie digital zoom feature
- 700D will get a slower shutter, smaller battery, smaller buffer, slower movie AF, no movie digital zoom, etc

Any other option would be a failure by Canon because these ASP-C sensors are 3.5 years old!
