I think there should be another option: I'd get it but I want to stay married...

the videos look the same to me.

+1.  I was seriously underimpressed.  The "new" one is great.

Welcome to the road to financial ruin. I too started with t3i, then the 7D, then the 5dIII and now I collect lens.  Backyard is the favorite place to go, its close, you have easy access, and you can do it day or night.  Use a feeder to help practice with, and a bird bath.  I live in So. Cal. and in summer the bird bath really attracts the critters setting you up for some great shots.  It also gives the birds water which in area is welcome.

The best resource I know of for night photography is David Kingham.  He specializes in night/Milky Way photography and has a lot of great gear information and tutorials on his website.  Definitely worth checking out.

Excellent source.  Thanks.

These are great shots.  I have to get one of these cameras.

I just got my camera back from the Irvine Service Center today, 4/25/13, and it still had the same firmware in it........1.1.3.   I sent it in for sensor cleaning and asked them to update the sensor and they said they would do it...... I didn't write it in the service request though.

Lenses / Re: Lens cleaning

Appreciate all the comments.  It's on the way to Canon for a cleaning.  I live in a very dusty environment and while I have cleaned the sensor before, I wasn't confident I got the thing cleaned properly.  I suspect I'll send it off once a year and then clean it myself depending on what shows up in between times.  Thank you again, for your advice.   I ordered the three of the filters as well.  I don't want anything messing up those lens.

Best,
John

Lenses / Lens cleaning
« on: April 21, 2013, 11:53:09 PM »
I pulled my 100 mm f2.8 out and was trying some new ideas about work related macros and found little dots on the front lens.  I used "breath" and a micro fiber but couldn't get them off.  Must be more than 40 I can see and sprinkled liberally around my lens.  The shot shows some of them in the red circles.  I ordered Zeiss LIQUID CLEANER and that hasn't arrived yet.  I've been known to stick that lens in close but I can't remember what could have caused the spots.  None-the-less they're there.  Should I send this off to canon to clean or try the zeiss cleaner first? I'm worried about removing the coatings on the lens with the cleaner.  The cleaner is from B&H and it was recommended.  Any thoughts about having canon cleaning it and secondly, using the zeiss cleaner? I've ordered a B+W 67mm XS-Pro Clear UV Haze with Multi-Resistant Nano Coating in the interim which was recommended on the forums.

Thanks for any input.

24-105 works for me. Small + unobtrusive, IS, sharp, and versatile zoom range for the street. The 5D3 has plenty of high-iso chops to make up for the lens speed. Below are @ 12,800:

+1 for me too.  The 24-105 works just fine and isn't obtrusive as some lens can be.

Lenses / Re: 135mm vs. 100mm macro
« on: April 16, 2013, 12:47:02 AM »
I have both the 135f/2 L & 100f/2.8 L IS Macro, but i use them for two completely different things, 135 I use for People, City streets, anywhere I need f/2, 100 I use purely for Macro, Underwater Macro, for this the 100 has no competition, not even the Nikons 105 (Crap Lens), I've tried the 100 for People etc, but although I find the Lens as Sharp as a button, I do find in low light the Auto Focus can begin to hunt, as it's primarily a Macro Lens, you may find the 135 is your Lens for Weddings/People etc as has been suggested, cant fault this Lens either, sharp, fast, wonderful in Low Light.

+1, same experience.  I'd take the 135 over the 100 anything but macro.  Both are wonderful lens.

I was driving out to Agoura Hills one evening and saw the most spectacular sunset with moon and only had my iphone and the shots were horrible.  Starting looking for a small pocket camera right after that.  Finally settled on getting the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V with 20x zoom but now I'm waiting for reviews on the new Canon 20x that is coming out.  We'll see.

A fascinating read and all good to know.  I was at a street fair yesterday and had no problems taking pictures with my 5d III (24-105) and in fact people were quite obliging.  There was a lot of security there too but I suspect that being at a fair assumed that people would have cameras.  Sort of a tourist thing.  The closest thing to an insult was when a kid asked how I liked my 7D?  Street fairs, parades, and other such events expect cameras, and I think a good place to practice "street photography."  Gain confidence, take your shots, and explore your potential.

(I usually ride my bike slowly thru my hometown... along the river... only one lens [+body] sitting in my backpack.)

I was surprised by the lens choice as well, however this is hard to argue with, it sounds like a nice day  :)
... except for me, it would be a nice convertible, but that's details  ;)

+1. Was surprised too and it's a great day for a drive in my convertible.
