EOS Bodies - For Stills / Some advice about my new (2nd) 5D3 please.
« on: March 13, 2014, 09:58:18 PM »
hello,

having sold my 5D2 I bought a 5D3. I made some tests to check it but due to bad weather and work I did not have the chance to use it. So now I tried to test it again.

It works fine but I noticed 2 things:

1. There is a infinitessimally small dot on the glass of the back LCD. It is just a dot
and can be seen only when the LCD is off.

I mentioned it and I was offered an exchange.

However, since I will have to pay the courier I guess it will cost (with insurance) more than 50 euros.

Any suggestions? (since it is very very small and can be seen only when LCD is off)

2. The image counter seemed a little over 500 while I had shot less than 10. But I do not
remember whether  I had formated the CF I put in the camera before using it.

Could this be the cause?

They claimed that this is the cause.

Lenses / 24-70 2.8 L II summary of defects
« on: February 26, 2014, 09:23:10 AM »
Hello,

having heard of so many issues with Canon's 24-70 f/2.8L II I thought of issuing a poll.

This is the first time I create one so apologies if I have missed something.

I assumed that no one would have more than 1 issue so as to prevent someone from voting both no issues and something else.

Any comments/suggestions are welcome  :)

Lenses / Big white lenses: Foot replacement or Lens plate?
« on: July 01, 2013, 04:30:21 PM »
hello,

having bought a 500mm f/4L IS II and using a Markins M20 head - which for at least this year will NOT be complemented with objects named Wimberely, Gimbal, Sidekick etc - I wonder if the best choice is a lens foot replacement or a lens plate. Since a friend is coming from the States where almost everything is cheaper I decided to test both! So I will get Kirk LP-58  and Kirk LP-55SG - the reason for Kirk is my positive experience with their Camera plates. I will have them in about 2 weeks.

I have the following thoughts:

1. LP-58 comes with 2 1/4" screws and a 3/8" adapter.

My 500mm requires 3/8 and 1/4 screws (one per category) so the adapter will have to be used. Do you have experience with these adapters? Are they safe to use?

For example when you decide to remove the plate which one will unscrew first adapter with the screw or just the screw first and leave the adapter in the lens plate and me scratching my head wondering how to fix it

2. LP-55SG means removal of the original foot. Will the screwing of the new foot be secure? Canon suggest to leave this to them which of course is silly so what is your opinion? Is the replacement safe? I guess it's both safe and trivial...

On RRS site they say:  "If your mounting screws loosen over time, consider using a drop of LocTite 242 for better security. "

There is nothing like that on Kirk's site but I think RRS are being more sincere...

3. Any comparison between Lens foot replacement and use of lens plate?

Sorry for possibly silly questions but I am newbie as far as big white lenses are concerned.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / F/8 Autofocusing impressions
« on: May 16, 2013, 12:56:51 PM »
Now that 5DMkIII has been upgraded to support f/8 autofocusing have you tried using it? Of course this question applies equally to 1D series owners too.

1: Do you find AF practical/fast/accurate ?
2: How is the quality retained?

Well, I know that the latter is NOT f/8 autofocusing related but now that this feature is available it may invite more and more people to try using it (instead of just watching the excellent the-digital-picture site). Apart from the new generation super telephotos that can probably handle the version III teleconverters well, how smaller/cheaper Canon lens/teleconverter combinations work? (for example EF300MM f/4 with 2X, EF100-400mm with 1.4X, EF400mm f/5.6 with 1.4X)

I am thinking mostly Canon lenses with Canon II or III series teleconverters but feel free to comment on any camera/lens/teleconverter combination you want regarding autofocusing and quality issues.
