Technical Support / Happy ending...
« on: December 14, 2014, 02:31:40 AM »
To make long story short, l had been using non-calibrated, non IPS, lower resolution(1920x1080 27") monitor as PP monitor. Everything looks great on the monitor. However when it comes to printing, well, I've always blamed on the local Walgreen for not using the best printer - my photos ALWAYS came out too yellow, orange, red too bright or too dark. So much frustration, it comes to the point that I wanted to quit printing.

Two weeks ago, my wife asked me to print some photos that I took at her company party. The photos will be used as Christmas cards. The original request came from her company VP. She picked out 10 photos and asked me to print them in 5x7. The due date for this project is Dec 16th. She clearly wanted these photos to look good.

I'm glad to report that after spending nearly $3000 on new PC + higher resolution & pre-calibrated monitor + Canon Pro-100 printer(bought it new on CL for $100), I have completed the job before the due date.

It's priceless to see the photos I edited in LR came out from the printer just like the way I wanted in the monitor - not 100% exact yet, I would say 95%plus. I almost cry when I saw the results.

I thought I would share a happy story with everyone here.

For those who just started/new in photography, learn from my mistake. CALIBRATE your monitor before doing anything. It was day & night different for me.

Technical Support / What photo printer do you use?
« on: December 09, 2014, 10:15:09 AM »
Hi guys,
I just wonder what kind photo printer you guys use at home. I don’t print very often, however, I’m thinking to buy one that could print up to 12x15 - to make photo book.

The boss at home wants me to make family photo books. I wonder, should I just use Adorama service and be done with? I kinda like the idea of having a decent printer at home so I can print when I want it. At least, I can see the colors immediately. I think you guys all know my PP skill by now... ;D

Thanks
Dylan

I'm thinking about upgrading to this monitor: http://www.lg.com/us/commercial/lcd-computer-monitors/lg-27MB85Z-B

Can you guys give me some thoughts?

Thanks

Photography Technique / DIY: Monitor Hood
« on: November 26, 2014, 11:41:30 PM »
I've been looking around for a decent monitor hood for my 27" monitor, nothing really catching my eyes.

I decided to make one for myself. I spent around $26 at Office Depot for a set of three, 30"X40", foam poster. With little tape, tape measure, pen and a box cutter, I came up with this.... ;D

When compared it to Mr. surapon's DIY projects, my display hood is no where near creative as his. However, I now can PP my photos without worry much about the light changing in my office - day/night the light will always stay the same. For $26, my DIY monitor hood covers both of my laptop and 27" monitor. Best of all, it can be removed from the desk at anytime.

« on: November 15, 2014, 03:36:50 PM »
The clock is ticking down....2hrs away. I'm excited and nervous at the same time, since this is my 1st time shooting a wedding.

I have been asked by a co-worker to photograph his wedding. I'll be the primary photographer and more likely the only one there.

Gear I packed:
1. 5D III + 1DX + dual BR strap
2. 16-35 f4 IS, 24-70 f2.8 II, 85L II, and of course 70-200 f2.8 IS II
3. 600EX-RT(x3) + ST-E3-RT, 20plus spare AA batteries
4. Umbrella + stand

 Wish me luck guys

Lenses / Questions: Canon 200mm f2 IS
« on: September 13, 2014, 12:45:59 PM »
Hi guys,
Quick questions for those owning 85L II, 135L and 70-200 f2.8 IS II.

1. Is there room for 200mm f2 IS II to blend in?

2. In what situation do you pull out the 200mm f2 IS II?

3. Did you sell any lenses after 200mm f2 IS purchase? Why?

Thanks in advance
Dylan

Keep in mind, I DO NOT get pay for what I'm about to say. Just want to share some thoughts on the camera product that might help other photographers.

Few weeks ago, my 1dx screen got bumped into Canon 400mm f2.8 IS II lens collar foot. The impact was strong. The screen protector from Expert Shield did a GREAT job protecting my 1dx screen.

See photos: http://dylannguyen.smugmug.com/Expert-Shield-Screen-Protector/

I would highly recommend Expert Shield screen protector to everyone. GREAT JOB Expert Shield.
