Software & Accessories / Lightroom and DXO OpticsPro workflow question
« on: December 20, 2014, 12:42:07 AM »
I've used LR for a few years, and I've gotten used to how ACR renders RAWs.  However, I've always wanted better noise removal performance at higher ISOs, so I downloaded the trial copy of OpticsPro 10 to test out.  I like how OpticsPro's prime noise removal seems to do a better job than LR, and some of the distortion tools seem to be better as well, but I like LR's local adjustments and other tools better.  How do users that use both these programs do it?

Is the best way to weed out/catalog in LR, denoise and apply lens profile in DXO OP, and the do all other adjustments in LR (crop, brushes, etc.)?

EOS-M / AS-style plate for EOS-M adaptor
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:26:32 AM »
I'm considering using the EOS-M to record my daughter's dance routine (the DSLR will be used for stills), so I'm thinking about getting an arca swiss compatible plate to use on the adaptor.  I'm used to the RRS system, but I've read there are issues with using RRS plates with the EOS-M adaptor due to interference with the plate/EOS-M body.  Does anyone have experience with this or have any recommendations for an AS style plate for use on the EOS-M adaptor?

Software & Accessories / Remote release/intervalometer question
« on: November 12, 2013, 12:09:45 PM »
I am looking for a remote release for my 5DIII.  I'm trying to decide between the Vello Shutterboss and the Hahnel Giga T Pro II.  I'd use it more as remote release than as an intervalometer, but I like having that capability as well.  Is either significantly better than the other?  I notice that the receiver is often mounted on the hotshoe, but I'm assuming it doesn't have to be when a flash is being used... TIA for your insight!

Lighting / EOS-M and the Canon 270ex II flash
« on: September 01, 2013, 09:35:05 PM »
Has anyone tried using the EOS-M with the 270 EX II flash?  Does it work well?  I'm looking for something small that would match the M but would still have decent power.  I don't need it to do much else (triggering, etc.), so it's mainly for fill, etc.  Trying to decide whether or not to get it while DigitalRev has it on sale for 130.

Lighting / Light stand recommendations/advice
« on: May 25, 2013, 11:18:55 AM »
I've picked up a couple flashes and am looking into multi-speedlite setups for both indoor/outdoor use.  Where I can use your advice/experience is what type of stand to get.  I'm looking at something like the Manfrotto 1051BAC or the 1005BAC.  I'd like it to be small enough to be somewhat portable, but I also intend to use softboxes with the speedlites in the future so stability against wind and weight might be a factors (with possibly more than 1 speedlight in the softbox).

Is one model better suited than the other, and if you know of something more appropriate, please let me know!

Software & Accessories / Tripod height?
« on: July 14, 2012, 08:08:54 PM »
From reading lots of threads in the forum, I understand that it is best never to get a tripod with a center column to  maximize stability.  I also understand that it is best to find one that would put the camera's viewfinder near your eye level.  However, is it a good idea to get one even taller than that or is it a waste?  I don't plan on doing lots of shots of the sky but is it a good idea to have extra height when needed?
