Software & Accessories / External AF assist light?
« on: April 06, 2014, 10:38:10 PM »
There I was shooting bullriding in a cave-dark arena yesterday, and occasionally I had trouble getting AF lock on a 1Dx with a 70-200 f/2.8L II.  Lo and behold Thinkgeek has flashlight-size IR lights for sale, would one of those be any use out to about 100 feet?  I might shop around for something which runs on AAs and has provision for a remote switch, but only if the idea is sound.

Canon General / Image Square Calgary - 200-400 on hand!
« on: March 25, 2014, 11:47:11 PM »
Hi, anyone know if they have one there?  I was there last (?) summer and they didn't then, but if they do now it'd be worth extending a trip which will get me close.

ETA - As of 26 Mar, they do!

Lenses / 16-35 I vs. 17-40
« on: September 01, 2013, 05:10:56 PM »
Any thoughts?  I have a line on a 16-35 I that I can't ignore.  I process everything through LR5.  The 16-35 II is an option but for half the price I don't see how I lose much.

So you're in a hotel room and have a dozen devices to plug in, each of which will occupy an entire outlet.  What do you do, particularly when you have to pack whatever you intend to use?  Assume please standard North American sockets.

Software & Accessories / Flash for FoCal - Anyone try it?
« on: August 13, 2013, 10:57:07 PM »
I've used FoCal to good effect on short lenses with overhead light, but for the longer ones the idea of using a couple flashes popped (sorry) in my head; Anyone try it yet?  Google didn't turn up anything on the subject.

Lighting / 600EX-RT: Fire master manually, slaves wirelessly?
« on: August 12, 2013, 08:21:04 PM »
Hi, anyone try this?  I mean, fire the master in a radio-linked setup via the PC socket with the hope of the flashes firing as if the master was on a body.

Is there any reason a gimbal mount couldn't be installed so that the upright is on the right side of the lens?  All the ads I've seen have it on the left.  I suppose that leads to the follow-on question, are they shown on the left for a reason?  It seems they're in the way of all the controls that way.

Canada / Vistek - legitimate or no?

They have some notably good prices on a few things I want; Anyone shop from them?  Do they sell entirely new stuff with warranty or is it refurbs?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D3 vs. 1DX for lower-light shoot
« on: July 24, 2013, 11:09:05 PM »
I have a chance to rent one or the other of these for a night-time event this Saturday; I have my 5D2, 24-70 f/2.8L II and 70-200 f/2.8L IS II.  The rental place closest also has a 135 f/2L on offer.

So what to do?  I lean toward the 5D3 for the fact that I can use the batteries I have too; I have enough CF cards that those won't be an issue either.

If the lighting is similar I should be able to get around 1/80" at f/2.8 (a requirement) at ISO 3200-4000.  That leads to the question:  Is the 5D3 enough or is the 1Dx worth the learning curve?

I'll attach an image from a similarly-lit event for context once I have one processed.

Software & Accessories / Feisol UA-180 gimbal mount - any experience?
« on: July 05, 2013, 05:02:38 PM »
Anyone try one of these?  I'm particularly curious about how it compares to a Sidekick or similar.
