Lenses / 100-400 II - first shots
« on: December 11, 2014, 07:52:55 PM »
just picked up 100-400 II
no micro adjust... sun was fading fast...and a windstorm developing... walked out to Burnside PortlandOregon

a few shots... before I had to be somewhere else...

also tried the tamron sp pro 1.4x tc...
noticed a slightly slower focus speed...

overall the lens is rugged, compact.....sits next to 24-105 f4...well...

that is about what I wanted...
it is NOT an f2.8 70-200 zoom  ...about 2 stops gone there.....
and I have no idea how well it does compared to 70-200 @ 400 with canon 2x TC......
mine was pretty good ...focus lagged a bit...

but this is smaller....which is where I have moved this cycle..
still have 14 II, sig 35, 85 f1.2  and macro for all thos specialized shots...

but this lens ..with the 24-105, and close focus, takes the 500 diopter, my polarizer   so it could travel ...well....

lots of shooting to do...
this is first hour..
and you will surely see lots of great shots from others ...

I passed on the 100-400 pump... but this one seems right for me..

by the way....the packing job on the lens is amazing...
good grief.....  this is so carefully thought thru....
they could have a teevee show/contest...for people to try to repack it just like it came....
no one would win

yes...I did get turned around with zoom up front... but getting adjusted now....
...
some award winning shots to follow..
last two are tamron sp pro TC... 560mm

again no micro adjust...5d3

thanks CanonRumors for a great group to read/learn from...and an easy place to exchange ideas...

I have dell 3011 monitor ...fairly accurate...but uncalibrated to print etc
with canon 5d3 shots in RAW edited in LR 4/5(beta) ...

LR
process:  2012
profile :  standard
always have used the sRGB popular setting ...not the widder Adobe RGB
for some reason LATELY my jpg result is warmer ....more reds than the edit screen...

edit screen looks pretty close to what I see
I never print - I just want fairly close colors... to what I SAW when I shot,
what I see in edit screen....... and not some new 'reddish' output... on jpg

and for sure what I see needs to be what I get

I dont need absolute color accuracy ...for printing for example...
something is 'shifted' lately.....??

I noticed this in the last few weeks..
so I might have some setting in LR that I dont understand..

but I have not found any reason YET

if you have a clue for me
I would be grateful

I dont need perfect color accuracy..
i just post occasional pics to web...

but LATELY they got redder/warmer..
can you help

RAW EDIT before (LR 5 screen capture)
and then after jpg output ..as examples
flesh tones show the effect best - IMO

thanks again for your comments...

Lenses / 24-70 II tested at SLR gear
« on: December 05, 2012, 11:42:23 AM »
I looked at SLR gear site....where they tested the 24-70 II ...
http://slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1494/cat/11

I collected the graphs and compared with ....
the 24L, 35L 50L ...and for lack of something better ...the 70mm position of the 70-200 II.

looking at chromatics also....

seems to do fairly well....
(MAYBE the 35L is ready for a replacement ....with these chromatics and with Sigma release - IMO
But I do love my 35L)

would liked to have seen better performance at 70mm..   and especially I.S.  ....
(I guess we are spoiled by the recent Canon lens releases)

but for this difficult range...it compares pretty well......to the overall quality of the 70-200 II
(well ...really..... very little compares to the 70-200 II)

thought it would be of interest to know that this test is up....

TOM

UPDATE note:

the 24mm L prime and 35mm L prime  sharpness graphs are swapped ... (24mm is under the 35mm  zoom column)
