Like many others in this post, I use a Dell monitor, the U2211H.
As far as calibration is concerned, I would definitely recommend it. One important thing to remember is that calibration is not a one-time thing. I have my software remind me every 2 or 3 months to recalibrate. Right now, I use the X-rite i1 Display 2 unit. It looks like it's about 160 bucks on Amazon, and it has done a good job of keeping my monitor's colors consistent.
Also, I print my photographs at a local Costco. Since the Costco printer profiles are available online at Dry Creek Photo, I am better able to predict what final prints will look like. Holding a finished print next to the proof on the monitor, and having the colors and tones match is awesome!

Fast primes.
You can get away with the cheaper primes, because as the guy above me said, resolution won't be as critical with video as it is with stills. I haven't had experience with all of them, but for application purposes, I'd recommend to you the following: 28 1.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, and 100 f/2). Any three of these lenses will cost you about the same as the 16-35. If you are going to be shooting more produced, polished video, zooms aren't as crucial because you can take time to set up shots. Just my thoughts!

It was not my first L, but it was my first lens purchase above $575 (17-40 on craigslist). Now that I've used it, I'm starting to forget how much it cost. Fantastic piece of glass. Enjoy!

+1 on the Dell Ultrasharp, although I couldn't say I recommend anything else made by Dell! I purchased the lowly U2311h over a year ago, and it's been stellar. Even color, good angle of viewability, solid build, etc. I print at Costco (cheap!) and I use their profiles (available online at Dry Creek Photo), as well as an i1Display 2 for calibration. My screen matches the prints almost spot on. I'm sure I could tweak my profile further, but it already does a fantastic job. $1,200 to spend? You'll be fine. Mine only cost $250!

I've got a 7D. I'm just doing a simple test where I shoot a ruler about 3-4 feet in front of the camera, slanted up and away from the camera at about 30 degrees. At 2.8/300mm it's tack sharp. And I mean tack. At 100%. At 70mm, it's not like it's front or back focusing, it's just not as sharp. Normally, I'd expect any lens to be a little soft wide open, but it doesn't appear to get any better as I stop down. I'm sure in real world application (haven't gotten outside cause it was dark when the UPS guy came!), it will be fine. It's just something I thought I'd get some feedback about. Thanks!

Hello all,
This is my first post in the forums! Anyway, I took advantage of the killer deal B&H had on the 70-200 2.8 IS II, and I just got it in today! I'm going to put it through the paces, thanks to the detailed lens test article here on CR. I haven't printed out any targets yet, but just doing some simple tests, I've already realized that my copy is softer at 70mm than it is at 200mm, through the entire aperture range. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is this something that should be expected, or should I have someone take a look at it? Thanks!
