Lenses / Re: 300mm F/2.8 non-IS... worth it?

Hi,
my proposal is to acquire a non IS for that price in good condition and use it as far as possible. These lenses, beginning with the FL Flourite in the past until today to the newest IS are legendary and under the most used professional primes of canon. So don't be worried about coordinating your budget and the prices of those lenses. It makes no sense to think about less quality lenses with more modern features if you have the chance to get such a workhorse in good condition for that price. We can do networking over the world if necessary - so it should be possible, in case of a necessary repair, to manage it, don't you think so?

Hi,
for such a small amount it is worth each penny.
The 5d classic is a very good cam and a excellent start with 35mm format. From the same poin of view I bought a 1Ds classic some month ago.
Withour discussion - the improvements of the newer versions are significant - but the much higher prices also ...
Therefore to learn about shooting with the digital 35mm format and using a absolute 'classic' DSLR - if one can speak about 'classic' in this segment.

Hi,
I would propose to buy the Zeiss.
In my mind at such short focal length AF is not so an important feature, if you compose your pictures as you defined your interests let expect then you will find the excellent moving of the mechanics of the Zeiss a major benefit in short times.
I use with my 1Ds a Zeiss 2.0 110mm Planar as nearly ever attached lens and never missed the AF. AF lenses are only used, when fast shooting is necessary, in most other cases I focus manually and use the metering features of the EOS-body for correct capture.
The wide angle sector is the best for begining the usage of MF lenses - so you will see the positive effects of a more active picture composition first.

Hi together,yes, the price might be hard voodoo, but by the way, audi makes the "R8" not as a "TT"-competitor - and sells both. The advantages of a very fast, top quality zoom in this focal length area with top IS are not to discuss - 2 - 4 more stops down would be a signifikant point, together with the low light performance of the actual EOS bodies it opens more and more scenes for available light shooting - that would be the major argument for me to buy one - and I'm not alone, I think.

I'm going to Amsterdam[Netherlands] tomorrow, and i would like to know if any of you have any recommendations. I'm thinking of beautiful places to visit and to photograph, and not the coffee shops which i am well aware of.
Is there any "must visit" places?

Hi, there are so many "must have seen"-points that I recommend buying a city-guide there or picking up one of the flyers from your hotels info-display, the most important information is, that the people there from all over the former Netherland's imperium are very open und relaxed, so accept them as they are and don't wonder. Ah - in a "Coffee-Shop" you will not necessarily drink coffee, but see yourself. Many people there are from arabian or african countries, ask before taking photos. I have never heard a "no" - but aks (!). Some hotels in the inner city are very expensive but extremely ugly - avoid them chosing a hotel near Schiphol or in the outer rings, it is not too far to the old city and the urban traffic system is good and cheap. Parking in the city is extremely expensive, 50 - 55€/day. Better using bicycle ('Fietsers') or public transport.

I think the discussion here is ok with some small hints:
Bringing expensive electronics into the EU without customs procedures is not so easy as often told. The guys at the customs know what is on in the world. And oif you bring in a rather new camera or lens the know this if the see it. And the extra fee's or legal treatment is not the finest if they get you.
But ...
it's a serious case of calculation: Improt tax into the EU for preferenced countries is low, something like 2% of price + transportation, tax is something like 20% (Germany). But the differences of the sales prices are larger in some cases. Not so different to have the flight payed - but large enough to import thins if you are on holidays in the US or Gulf-Region. And fullfill all customs requirements. The customs officers help you to fill the necessary forms and the payment is easy there, so you do not spend much time there. And all is completely legal, also if you pass the borders later on, you have alle clean and safe papers ...

I think the new Zeiss Distagon 1:1,4/55mm is a derivate from the former Hasselblad Distagon 1:2,8/50mm - which has it's own logik to use a good medium-format design for 35mm-use as done before with the lens-elements in the Hartblei-Superrotators. The dimensions of such a lens is the other side of the medal - it has medium-format-size, explaining the 82mm-diameter of the filter. The weight will be the next point - nearly 1000g I estimate.
The use of only the center area of a theoretical 60x60mm-area helps to eliminate disturbing effects from the outer regions and uses only the best performing zone of the lens. The reduction of vignetting is a further advantage, so that the caim for superior performance with 35mm-dslr is to believe ...

Hi,
I think, the relevant item is, how the setup fits to your hand more than the mass as single kriterium. My 400D + battery-Grip fits to the kit-lens - with heavier lenses I prefer my 10D + battery-grip. After having bought the frist bg for my 10D the decision was, to fit all bodies with bg's to have better balance and control - then the relevance what lens is on the cam sunk significantly.
