I had assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that the EFS lens could be smaller/have less glass than an EF and would cost less to produce. I own both the 10-22 and the 60mm. I don't know why the former costs about 5% more than its FF counterpart, but the latter is 25% less. And an EFS 17-55 is much cheaper than an EF 24-70mm, at almost 50% less.

I'm still waiting for an inexpensive fast normal prime to use on crop sensor cameras. < holding breath after many years

Canon made the new 24mm and 28mm f/2.8 IS lenses that are clearly geared toward video users (and not cheap!), but they continue to ignore all the many existing 7D, xxD, and Rebel customers.

+1. The big lenses recommended here on the forum are heavy may feel off-balance when connected to a light-weight XSi.
Meanwhile, any tips on using the 55-250 for football?
I have the same gear that you own, and enjoy shooting sports (kids' lacrosse) and wildlife. There's a lot going for the 55-250, but I too saved my pennies toward a better lens. In the meantime, I got used to using a monopod, switched to shooting only RAW, and found out how to make the most of the noise-reduction features in ACR. At the first few games I learned where to position myself to catch the best action, tried to remember also to take human interest photos (players on sidelines, excited fans, exasperated coaches, etc.), and experimented with different autofocus modes & whether to use IS or not.
So, try different things. Consider the first couple of games be for testing so you won't take it too seriously, and have fun with it as you learn.

Would they? I rather suspect they'll release something like an EF-S 30mm f/1.8 instead, especially if they keep the cost under $200.
They'd sell at least one more. I'd love to have a fast normal-for-crop-sensor prime lens, but have not bought the 35mm f/2 because it has mediocre ratings considering its current price. Keep that price and upgrade to USM. Or make a sharp fast EF-S version cheaply, nifty50 style, and drop the price. Go either way and I'd buy one.

SD cards have manual write protection switches. When my card gets full and is removed from the camera I will flip that switch immediately. I too once lost images to a flaky card-reader while downloading files, so these days I want the cards to be read-only before going anywhere near a computer. (This can also prevent the spread of certain computer viruses if you use a card in multiple PCs).

I'm saving my pennies for a 35mm prime and have been looking online for deals. (A 100-400L in July ate my entire yearly hobby budget.) Over the last month or so, the EF 35 f/2 lens seems to have gone out of stock at two retailers. One can hope that the current supply is dropping because a new lens is in the works. With newer camera models able to record video, but not able to autofocus well while recording, one can also hope that all future lenses will have decent manual focus rings and distance scales.
The two specialty EF-S lenses that I own (60mm macro and 10-22mm) work VERY well and are smaller/cheaper/lighter than comparable EF lenses would have been. But the existing 35mm f2 is already small/cheap/light so I don't see why a new lens at that focal length would be EF-S.
