Just thought I'd contribute a couple...

Part of the problem is:
I have a Tamrac bag that I got more than 30 years ago, I've hauled it all over the country and halfway around the world, and it is still in very good shape.  Its not showing obvious wear and I'm not seeing a need to replace it, maybe in another 30 years...

Wouldn't that result in field curvature? Or maybe this is a way to correct that?

It wouldn't affect curvature of field, but it sounds like a way to correct for focus shift (the 50 1.2 L has been known to have focus shift at close distances)

One from yesterday.

Cool shot!  It would be interesting to see the same shot after a hard rain.

What part if the country is this?  AZ?

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Southern California

Roger Cicala at Lensrentals has a number of good articles on lens tests and I.Q. etc.

For example: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/10/there-is-no-perfect-lens-test-either

He addresses your question in this article

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Is it flare, internal reflections or a ghost

Thank you Arjay and AUGS. Noted user error.
User error, perhaps... but more like running into limitations of equipment that has less than 100% of internal reflections suppressed.

Some lenses have more flare and internal reflections than others.  Manufacturers try to cut down on this with coated lenses and whatnot, but, you can't really eliminate this flare with the lens you have. (Photoshopping it out of the sky isn't hard, other places maybe harder...)

These are reflections, could be internal...
