I am a Canon fan, obviously since I have heavily invested in their gear ...

... but I definitely want to know if some of my equipment has known design flaws that should be fixed on warranty. I have had to send in two bodies for repair, and I had to return two other bodies for replacement because they did not function properly from new. The two repairs were for issues that were present when I purchased the cameras, and they were fixed on warranty, but I could have easily missed the warranty period.

Post everything you know!

Yes I am a poor quality photographer. A good one will do SOOC only. Yeah right...

Yep, it's getting clearer a the time: those who have an overwhelming desire to under expose should by Nikon.

i used Canon and Nikon concurrently last year. A 5D2 and D700. D700's AF & ISO performance are amazing. The DR latitude while editing RAW on Lightroom is stunning. I am no professional photographer, hence did many simple exposure mistakes. Using D700 reduce my worries on this department a lot. One example is ISO/DR related issues I encountered on Canon:

Camera    Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure    0.01 sec (handheld)
Aperture    f/1.4
Focal Length    35 mm
ISO Speed    100
Exposure Bias    0 EV

I put a gradual exposure compensation on LR started about one third of the frame to the top. The noise is unpleasant.

On the other hand, the colors from D700 turned me off. Yes I use Lightroom, but I don't want to depend on it to the the color that I like. Hence I sell the D700 out, along with the lenses (50/1.4 AFD, 85/1.8AFD, T24-135 and a 70-210), and buy a used 1D2.

My conclusion now is, I am not going to buy another Canon camera unless its sensor has 14 DR. 5D4? 5D5? I dont know. But Canon definitely wont see my money on Camera department.

I've used 70-200/4L IS. Now I use Tamron 70-300 VC USD. It is not an L, but considering the price and the output, it is very very good.

Here are picture I've taken so far:

I have used the D700 allot, good quality just no a reason to jump ship.

Same here. Used D700 for about 6 months. Love its fast AF and low light capabilities. However, I found myself did too much of post-processing to get to the look I like. Hence, sold it.

My wife got me one year. Bought me when of those lens cups. They even come in a canon box. Well sorta but for that first 8 seconds it really looks like a 24-105. I was clever but also kinda sad. Hah

Somehow I am feeling the urge to laugh and to cry at the same time.
What a dissonance...

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D3 vs 6D AF in low light
« on: December 17, 2012, 07:14:49 PM »
I find its amazing that there are so many posts here that appear to be defending the 5DMk3 ability to focusing ability in low light. Guys, the 5D3 are many things and it has a great focusing system - but its ability to focus in the dark is atrocious, compounded by the lack of a pop up flash i would say it is one of the most significant short comings of the 5D3. Canon recognizing this have improved low light focusing in the 6D and I am sure that every pro dslr released henceforth will be superior to the 5D3 in low light focusing. If this could be improved via firmware I wish canon would fix this. There is no easy solution for this other than to walk around with a flash light. I heard that there was a laser assist someone was working on but i have not seen it.
Most of my photography with the 5D3 is in low light and I find the focusing to be excellent, at least as good as any other camera I've used in the past 10 years.  And most Canon flashes have a built-in autofocus assist light, so I don't know why anyone would need a laser assist.

I am wondering, is 5D3 with flash assist light beat the EV-3 low light focusing of 6D?

I currently use 5D2 with 430exII... Still undecided to go to 5D3 AF or 6D low light... Anyone has any scientific idea on how low 5D2 with 430exII can focus?

if Canon wont release the proper firmware, might as well wait for an upgrade from Magic Lantern  :P
