I'm new to doing portraits but was asked recently to submit some examples of head shots done in my rather basic and new home portrait studio.  The potential client liked my work and asked some questions that I don't know how to answer since I've never actually done a corporate head shot gig. I'm hoping some pros out there can give me some guidance as to how these things are normally done. I would do head shots of 18 people at their site, mainly for their website use.

1. How do you the shot, by the hour, or a flat rate, etc? What is a typical fee? I'm in Colorado Springs.

2. Is retouching usually included in a fee?  Do portrait photographers usually do retouching themselves or do they ship the work out to a professional expert retoucher? What does retouching usually cost in $ or time for this type and size of job? I've done some basic skin/hair retouching myself in Lightroom but I'm certainly no expert at it.

3. They want to know if they would get both high and low res images for website use and if they would own the rights to the images. What is typical industry practice?

I appreciate any guidance from experienced pros out there!!!  :)

Photography Technique / Question for Wedding Professionals
« on: January 14, 2014, 05:05:21 PM »
I'm an amateur photographer whose son just recently got married.  I brought my camera (a new 6D) to the wedding and reception and took pictures, carefully trying not to interfere with the professional photographing the events. While I was pleased with many of my photos, my biggest mistake was bringing only one lens, a 50mm f1.4. I woefully lacked sufficient depth of field in several shots (even with flash and ISO 3200) as both venues were dimly lit and the reception venue was extremely tight and crowded. Since I'm mainly an outdoor/nature photographer, I'm curious what you wedding pros consider your best and most reliable lenses to use at events with similar shooting conditions to what I mentioned. Thanks!

Software & Accessories / Make sense to upgrade to Adobe CS6?
« on: December 26, 2013, 12:59:16 PM »
I currently have CS5 and recently found out that my CS5 version of ACR did not support my new 6D raw files.  So I downloaded the free Adobe DNG Converter 8.3 to use as a workaround step in my workflow.   Now I am wondering if it would make sense to upgrade to CS6 for the additional features it has over CS5.  My biggest concern with that is how long Adobe will continue to support CS6 with updates to ACR.  If Canon comes out with a 7D Mark II in 2014, will CS6 support it or will I be in the same boat as I'm in now with having to do an additional workaround step?  I'm not a big fan of the Adobe CC model and would like to delay going that route as long as possible. I use Windows 7. Does anybody out there know the support plans for CS6 in 2014?

I'll be tagging along with my spouse on a business trip to Whitby, England for a few weeks this summer and would appreciate any input from folks familiar with the area on "can't miss" photographic venues in and around Whitby.  If you have any images you'd like to share, please do!  Thanks in advance.

Technical Support / Sharpening question for Photoshop experts
« on: February 22, 2013, 02:58:31 PM »
I'm new to using Photoshop (CS5) and am wondering what seasoned users have found to be their most successful workflow options when it comes to sharpening and producing really crisp images for web display.  I'm assuming a good initial capture in-camera.  Thanks in advance.

Lenses / 7D + 400/5.6 + TC?
« on: February 22, 2013, 12:38:23 PM »
I'm new to Canon Rumors and so glad I found it because it's been a great source of knowledge for me.  I recently bought a 400/5.6 mainly for birding and wildlife photography.  I chose that particular lens because of its relatively low cost compared to the other super telephotos in Canon's lineup.  I've been thinking about getting a TC to use in combination with my 7D and 400 for the extra reach but am concerned this combination might not work because of an issue with F8 center point AF I've seen mentioned before.  I don't fully understand what this is about but would like to be sure that the TC will work before I spend the money on it.  Any enlightenment on this topic is greatly appreciated as I may be totally off base in my understanding.  :-\
