EOS-M / 11-22EF-M or 10-18EF-S on a EOS-M
« on: February 15, 2015, 02:39:44 PM »
I've been pondering getting a 11-22EF-M, but then it struck me that the 10-18mm EF-S is about 20% cheaper in the UK, has anyone used the latter on an adapter ?  What's the performance ?   I've not got a crop body DSLR so the 10-18 wouldn't be much use other than on the EOS-M - I'm thinking a native  EF-M solution would be better for numerous reasons, anyone have a different opinion ?

Item on PhotoRumors suggests that the Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM (for Nikon) Is now discountinued, could this indicate a possible replacement lens from Sigma ?

EOS Bodies / Photokina 2014
« on: July 26, 2014, 05:22:39 PM »
So, Photokina in September, what do we expect to see ?

I'm not expecting all, just some...

Canon EOS 7D MkII with 24mpx and next gen 70D AF tech
Canon EOS 750D with a 18mpx sensor and trimmed down 70D AF tech
Canon EOS M3 with same sensor and AF as 750D

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 IS < hopefully f1.4
Canon EF 85mm f2.0 IS
Canon EF 100-400mm L

Canon EF-M 16-120mm

Sigma 24mm f1.4
Sigma 85mm f1.4

Zeiss Otus 85mm f1.4

New Fuji X with the 24mpx APS-C sensor - probably in the X-Pro 2 with fixed lens first ?

What else ?

Lenses / What Lenses are missing from Canon's range
« on: July 16, 2014, 12:14:27 PM »
Whilst we all have some idea in our heads about what might get replaced next, we all have some idea of 50/85mm IS lenses, a 35mm f1.4 II L or 100-400L - but what realistically is missing from Canon's EF range at the moment ?

Here's my thoughts on omissions that could realistically be made - as to them being economic, that's a whole different story ;-)
- A fast wide, Nikon style like a 12/14-24mm f2.8
- A premium medium zoom, perhaps 20-135mm f4.0 IS to replace the 24-105L
- An affordable 500mm - f5.6 with IS for £2000 ?
- An EF pancake zoom, covering something like 20-50mm ?

Over to you...   What's missing ?

So I've been asked to shoot a wedding by a friend, I've never done one before, never done any sort of commercial work before, but she's keen for me to shoot her special day based upon the work I post on flickr - I don't have a flash, but do have a Canon 6D, a 24-70mm f2.8 Mk II and a 135mm f2.0 - what pitfalls would I be heading into and what advice would "you" give someone like me before shooting a wedding.

Context here, UK wedding, low budget, likely to be a registry type wedding then a meal and booze up in a pub back room afterwards - not expecting a great venue, mostly just family reportage and a few informal group photos

EOS-M / Next official EF-M Lens
« on: June 29, 2014, 06:21:33 AM »
Following the release of the Canon EF-M 55-200 and the third party Tamron EF-M 18-200, what's next for the EF-M range from Canon, the four lens range is nice, but perhaps limited in appeal, what would you like to see and also, what patents are out there currently ?

I've said a number of times that is like a compact pancake zoom, something like a 17-35mm range, but also a larger 15-85/135 would be a potentially big seller.  Less appealing to me perhaps, but I'm sure a couple of fast primes would reinforce the appeal of the system, 35mm & 50mm perhaps.

I'm still also hopeful of a wider range of cameras, a EOS-M in a DSLR style, something like a thinner Canon 100D, with the M3 as a mid-range and a value version of the M3

Over to you !

Lenses / Canon 70-300L with Kenko 1.4x or 2.0x
« on: December 26, 2013, 03:24:01 PM »
Anyone using the Kenko Pro-300 extenders with the Canon 70-300L on a Canon 6D or EOS-M ?

Any issues ?  Does AF work ?  Any lockups or other problems ?

Lenses / Trade current lenses for 70-200L f4 IS or 70-300L
« on: December 09, 2013, 05:18:26 PM »
My local specialist shop has a pair of secondhand L teles in stock - both in fantastic condition.  I've currently got a 70-300 non L and a 10-22 that I can't use on my 6D, I've also a 1.4x II and potentially a 135L to trade...

Getting shut of the 70-300 non L and 10-22 is a no brainer, but I'm cut between the two white L teles that the shop are selling, both with a 12 month warranty.  The 70-200 would work with the x1.4, but would I miss the 135L if I traded that in too ?  Hmmm...

Thoughts ?

Lenses / How does EF Mount compare to other mounts
« on: October 19, 2013, 02:59:38 PM »
We often here that Canon had to ditch the FD mount in order to get AF working, what advantages did the EF mount bring and what exactly are the pros and cons of lens mounts by Nikon, Sony, Pentax and others ?

Lenses / UV Filter damage limitation on 16-35II
« on: October 03, 2013, 12:10:11 PM »
So there I was, walking along with my 6D & 16-35mm II and boom, my knee gave way on some steps, I fell to my knees and the front of the lens hit the ground, sound of glass smashing as I commando rolled over...  I've grazed both my knees, my left arm and dented my pride...  Plus did the attached damage to my 16-35mm II - can't get the filter off at the moment, going to take it into the local independent shop when I get home from holiday, filter is a dead loss, lens looks ok bar the marks on the outer edge and until I get the filter ring detached, I've no idea of the damage to the front filter thread.  Lens appears to work, two scuffs on my 6D are annoying too :-/

So folks - always fit a filter !!!

Third Party Manufacturers / Playful ideas with a Canon !
« on: August 23, 2013, 07:47:25 PM »
I've really got into playing around with how i take my photos recently, been using black glass for a few years, got a Lensbaby last Christmas, added the macro/wide/tele accessory kit around Easter, then a intervalidameter, then the lensbaby fisheye optic last month...  Also using Instagram and Kitcam on my iPhone almost daily.  I've read about people using old retro lenses, popping adapters on to use new lenses like the Nikon 14-24 etc...   Then I've read recently about the Lynny Lens, but what else is there ?  What playful fun do you get up to with your Canon, with lenses, sliders, flashes, timing accessories and such...

Lenses / 400mm f5.6 - Why ?
« on: July 14, 2013, 04:52:47 PM »
Been pondering my long tele options over the last few months...  A 100-400mm is looking very likely, but I'm left pondering, why would anyone but the 400mm f5.6 prime ?

Serious question, what does it offer other than being very slightly cheaper and lighter ?

Canon General / Camera bags inside Versailles
« on: June 01, 2013, 03:01:45 PM »
I'm currently in Paris on holiday armed with practically my full kit of lenses (see below) - we are planning on going to Versailles tomorrow (Sunday) and I've stumbled across the access rules which appear to suggest that bags and such have to be left in the cloakrooms before entering the palace, but they won't accept photography equipment left in the cloakrooms, I'm guessing for security/theft reasons - has anyone visited and could clarify the situation, as I'd like to take my kit bag or at least my small rucksack with at least the 24-70 for the gardens and the 16-35 for the interiors - but don't want to be caught out by the rules.  I would just carry the 6D and a single lens, but would prefer the flexibility of the 16-35, 24-70 & 135

I'm thinking as a one stop lens the 24-70 would work best, but would the 16-35 better suit the interiors ?  Thoughts ?
