EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Firmware: EOS 5D Mark III Version 1.3.3
« on: January 29, 2015, 08:27:11 PM »
1. Improves the AF controllability when shooting in Live View mode with a wide-angle lens (fixed focal length or zoom).

This must have been quite an issue to get (mostly) its own firmware release. Or is there other stuff not disclosed?

No exposure compensation in AUTO ISO in M mode, like it was introduced in the last firmware of the 1DX  :(  I was waiting for that.

Me too. I asked Rick Sammon to pass that request on to Canon, and he said he would.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Sigma 24-105 f/4 DG OS Discontinued

I bought this lens, and after extensively comparing it to my Canon 24-70 f2.8, I sold the Canon. This is an outstanding lens.

Be cautioned if you have a 5D3.

ML is still very alpha for the Canon 5D3.

1. If you install Magic Lantern on your 5D3, you will set a firmware bootflag on the camera, that is NOT removable. At this time, it is a permanent change to your camera
2. It seems associated with this flag, that the boot times and wake up times can be significantly increased on your camera, I'm hearing up to like 2-3 seconds I believe. This is a deal breaker for some folks. This does NOT seem to be something that you can reverse.

The problems I mentioned above, will remain on your 5D Mark III even if you remove the Magic Lantern software. So, please be advised.

That being said, I've been following ML forums and all things about them and I'm HUGELY impressed. I really, really hope they can overcome these 2x issues with the 5D3 so I can feel comfortable with using ML on my camera. I'm anxious to start shooting RAW video with my 5D3...and to explore all these other cool options with stills photography.

But at this time, since I have only one 5D3, I am holding off putting ML on my camera.

Caveat Emptor as they say.

Also, ML doesn't run on the latest canon firmware version on the 5d3.

Lenses / Re: 70-200 f4 IS

I read somewhere that canon was updating its older lenses because they didn't have the resolving power to keep up with the latest sensors.

Anyone know how old this lens is, and when it's due to be updated?

Loved my Phottix Odin TTL remote flash triggers for Canon, until two of them suddenly stopped working with very little use.

Sure, stuff happens, but Phottix isn't responding to my emails about getting them repaired/replaced under warranty. Thus right now they're just two over-priced paper weights, and I'm wondering how long the other two will continue to function. (Could lousy customer service be a cultural phenomenon?)

Ok, Canon. It's been three months and this still isn't fixed.  Let's get a move on!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5dm3 custom shooting modes useless?

Thanks for the info! (Took me a few seconds to understand the term "wetware"...)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5dm3 custom shooting modes useless?
« on: July 31, 2012, 07:00:38 PM »
Why? Because anything that gets changed while in a custom mode, say a focus point, reverts to the registered value when the body goes in to sleep mode. Hope that's something that can be remedied in firmware...

Technical Support / 5d3 codec

Is there a codec available yet to allow ms windows 7 to display 5d3 raw files?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D3 Rate button
« on: May 06, 2012, 01:44:38 PM »
It would be REALLY helpful, Canon, it this otherwise useless button (like the Print button on the original 5D) was made programmable.

So a SanDisk CF Extreme III 30MB/s Edition 8GB can keep up with the 6fps rate, with a burst capacity of 29 frames. So the only advantage to a faster-than-30mb/s is burst capacity.

But the fastest SD cards can only handle bursts of 22 frames, suggesting that they may not be able to handle 6fps. Is there a way to calculate the real frame rate for an SD card, or infer it from Rob's data (which is awesome)?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: file name scramble

WHY is a puzzle to me too.

Whatever, that should be documented in the Filename section.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / file name scramble
« on: April 13, 2012, 03:38:56 PM »
Tools menu>file name>User setting 2.

Put in any three letters you want. Canon will subsequently name your files with the three letters IT chooses, and in whatever order IT feels like.

MCB + Image size became _CBL0136 (image size missing), then _CBMxxxx

I then transposed the letters to try to get the sequence I wanted, but

BCM + Image size became _CMMxxxx

I admit to being mildly dyslexic, but...
