I'm by no means a wedding photographer or a professional!

I did shoot a wedding last week with a friend who ask that I help him. I think the photo of the groom with the bride in the background is reversed from what I think it should be? I kinda of feel that a wedding day is really more about the bride than anything else, but that's just me! Here's the one I took at the wedding I helped shoot.

I also agree with others about the ?bridesmaid?, she does not work in the photo with that look on her face, etc...

I've been doing a lot of senior photo shoots, and also some general portrait work over the last few years and I was thinking that a prime lens might be in order for better DOF and results....

When you say better DOF what do you actually mean? A shallower DOF or deeper DOF or a particular bokeh look? Your 70-200 is a fantastic portrait lens, it's the go-to lens for portrait shooters across the planet. I'd suggest looking at the exif data on your portrait shots and see what focal length is your most used for what you consider the best results. PS Bridge or Lightroom will sort these for you. That might help aim you towards a well informed decision for a 50, an 85 or a 135 or just to stay with what you've already got.

Looking at your current lens list, I see a gap at the wider end if you're looking for quality. You'll pick up a good pre-owned 24-105 for the $amount in your budget.

I'd like to have a shallower DOF. I know I can't get much with Crop, but using a faster lens should help, correct?
Also as I mentioned, I'll be leaving the crop world and heading towards FF around the end of the year, as I save up for the 5D3. Once I go FF, I will no longer have the 15-85, as it's for Crop bodies only. If I can collect enough, I could get the 5D3 with the 24-105 as a kit. Until than, I'd like to have a little shallower DOF in my photos.

I can't afford the Sigma 85 f1.4, it's a little out of my range. I'm sitting in the $500.00 dollar range for a lens. So, I need to stay within my means, as I only spend the money I make from photo shoots on camera stuff, keeps me in line. The Sigma 30 F1.4 is out of the question, as I do plan to upgrade to FF by the end of the year and I don't want to invest in APS-C lenses. I already have the 15-85 which I'll sell with the 60D when the time comes.

So, it seems that both lenses are good choices but maybe the 50 is a little better from what I'm reading. I guess I can mount the 70-200 F4L IS is I need the 85mm range.

Thanks for all the feedback! Unless I see any other reason to not get the 50 or if you think their is something that might work better than either of the 2 lenses I mentioned, I'll order the 50mm 1.4  next week.

My current photos are very nice and I have gotten many complements on the shoots. I'm just thinking that going prime is the next step. A lot of my photos are head or head & torso shots, so I could go either way, just am not sure which is a better lens as the 50 is pretty old, but people say it's still great. When comparing them on the Digital Pic website, the 85 looked to have a better result on the charts.

I'm about to purchase a prime and am wondering which lens would be the best to get. I'm shooting with a 60d and  currently have a 15-85 ef-s and the 70-200 f4 is. I'm in a class doing portrait photography, indoors  and outdoors. thoughts as to which lens you would is on crop body? thanks

I think that is why Canon has been doing alot of len upgrades. I think they are making sure that users who will buy a Big MP body will be able to get results out of it via the new L glass.  Just MHO, but I think Canon is smart to upgrade glass first.

I wonder if Canon has been putting this monster off until they got all these upgraded lenses out? Now that Canon has upgraded (Updated) some of their most popular lenses, makes me think they wanted to be sure they had the resolving power to support big mega pixels? Just my 2 cents worth. But I think it makes sense?

The lens I use the most is my EF-S 15-85 on my 60D. It has such a nice focal range and since I only own two lenses, my other is the 70-200 F4L IS. I do a lot of Senior Photo shooting and the two lenses are just fantastic. New Problem is that I've gotten into bird shooting and now I will have to get a bigger lens. Darn!

I had a Pentax K1000 for a long time, as my father was big into photography and I was not allowed to use his Leica. Than my father-in-law passed away and he had a Canon AE1 programmable. Wow was that a nice camera. He had an 18-135 and a 50 1.4. When I went to the local store to check out new lens, they had just got in a new Rebel XT. I thought.... taking photos and not running out of film.... what a great concept. I tested the Nikon d70 that was there and it just didn't feel good in the hands. So, I stayed with Canon and bought the XT. I than joined the local Camera club and got to borrow L lens and that was what keeps me with Canon... quality lens.  And I think that's why Canon is upgrading it's lens, getting ready for another awesome camera that requires the quality glass!

I think Canon should continue with the Foveon type Sensor (http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/07/canon-3-layer-sensor-foveon-type-patent/) I think that would be a good place to start with new sensors, as I've used a sigma DSLR with the Foveon sensor and it's got a great DR. They could do a 16MP Crop (16mp would be bigger diodes than the current 18 for better light gathering) and achieve 48MP Crop. Just seems like a good way to go.

Just my 2 cents. But it would sure make a nice Pro series Crop. As far as a FF??

Didn't Canon patent some form of the Foven Sensor a while back??? I thought I saw a post awhile ago on here regarding that sensor??  Maybe a 15.3 x 3 layer Sensor???

I own the Canon 60D and have the EFS 15-85 and the 70-200 F4 IS. These two lenses cover pretty much everything I do. I shoot Car Shows, lots of seniors, family. I think my next purchase will be the 300 F4L IS to start with Birds on the back deck that face the woods. But, anyway, I really like the outcome from these lenses and I think they are worth every penny. The only thing you need to remember is that if you ever decide to go Full Frame, you will not be able to use the EFS15-85 on it.
