Software & Accessories / DxO Optics Pro adds support for Canon's 1D X
« on: October 10, 2012, 04:17:33 PM »
Read the article (glorified press release) over at imaging resource. Additions include a total of 396 new lens modules, of which some 224 are specific to newly-added cameras: 106 for the Canon EOS-1D X.

This means that DXO mark testing for the 1D X has probably been complete for some time, will they ever release the numbers, or are they just trying to avoid the S___ storm that's likely to ensue when (and if) they do?

EOS Bodies / Question - Auto focus speeds & Battery Grips
« on: August 08, 2012, 12:49:55 AM »
Does the added battery in the battery grips help drive the autofocus faster in the 7d & 5d3? Tried searching google but just came up with noise that didn't answer the question, just had all the search words. Anybody know if the grips help drive the lenses any faster?

No Optical Drive, modeled after the Air.

It's got a Retina display; 15.4-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2880-by-1800 resolution at 220 pixels per inch. (My 27" iMac only has 2560x1440)

Memory 8GB std, up to 16GB. (an upgrade from 8GB to 16GB is only $200) ;D cheap by apple standards.

Flash Drives, 256GB or 512GB std., 512GB model upgradeable to 768GB (for $500).  >:(

Base price $2199, a maxed out version will run you $3749 for 2.7GHz i7, 16GB memory and 768GB Flash Storage,

USB-3, Dual Thunderbolt, backlit keyboard.

CR won't let me link to the apple store link to the MacBook Pros. so you'll have to go to the apple site and find it on your own.

No announcement for an update to the Mac Pro  >:(

EOS Bodies / One area the 5D3 beats the D800...
« on: April 20, 2012, 10:12:05 AM »
It seems the 5D3 beats the D800 (and the 5D2) in it's anti-aliasing. You'll notice the 5D3 image is just about perfect, the 5D2, D800 and the A900 all show problems, phantom vertical or horizontal lines that seem to cut through the pattern. Red arrows show the problem areas.

The image is from DPR's RAW image comparisons. It's not quite visible on the D800 at the reduced resolution on this site, however if you download the image you should be able to see it clearer at full size.

You can also go to DPR's page here and move the selected area to the pinwheel directly below the + in the center of the frame. You can of course compare how other cameras perform against the 5D3 on this same test.

EOS Bodies / 1D X RAW Images Available Now...
« on: April 08, 2012, 02:48:13 PM »
Here they are. The 12800 looks pretty amazing.

#53 is at 3200
#54 is at 6400
#63 is at 12800

Just wondering if anybody here also owns a Nikon body, and if they behave similarly. Not looking for a fight, or a Nikon is better thread, just wondering. I'll still be picking up a 5D3 or 1D X, I just haven't decided which yet.

Site Information / Main site formatting problems in Safari
« on: April 03, 2012, 09:28:40 PM »
Wondering if anyone else is having problems with the main site in Safari. The forum continues to look like it always has in Safari, but the main site seems to have lost it's formatting in Safari 5.1.4. Firefox still displays the main site fine, and Safari continues to display the rest of the sites I visit correctly. Just thought I'd give you administrators a heads up that a % of your users may be having issues with the main site.

Title says it all. Looked all over, B&H, Andromeda, Amazon, Canon's site, etc... 1/2 just say "USA warranty", but none of them say how long the warranty is good for.

Third Party Manufacturers / Mother of God - D800 scores 95 DxOMark
« on: March 23, 2012, 06:10:21 PM »
Making it the Highest Rated Sensor they've tested. Impressive! Don't Let us down Canon.

Nikon D800

Overall Score - 95

Color Depth - 25.3 bits

Dynamic Range - 14.4

Low Light ISO - 2853

This is killing me, I think Canon's going to lose this round big. I'm not jumping ship though, I'll still get the 5D3 or 1D X... because I just can't stand how the Nikon Cameras feel in my hand, and I've got all my Canon Gear.

Odd image skewing in dpr's studio scene comparison. If you move the image view portion to the black and white pinwheel located directly below the images center cross point you will notice that on most sensors, including the D4 and the Canon 5DMk2 that some of the spines of the wheel are skewed, in both raw and jpeg images.

In the Nikon D4 I see a skewed line run horizontally across the diameter, just above the center point, and a vertically skewed line at the far left of the pinwheel. The Canon 1DMk4 has the same problem, in almost the exact same positions as the D4, only more pronounced.

For the Canon 5DMk2 I see a horizontal skewing about a 1/4 way from the top of the wheel, no vertical skewing though.

The Nikon D800, Canon 7D, and the Leica M9 don't exhibit the same behavior though.

Any ideas on whether this is indeed flaws with the sensors, or with the imaging software?

Lenses / MTF Charts, Lenses, and Crop Sensors... a question.
« on: March 16, 2012, 03:46:53 PM »
Since MTF Charts are from the center of the lens to the outer edges and Canon usually shows their lenses out to about 22mm from center, am I right in assuming that a FF sensor (36mm across) would only be applicable to about the 18mm portion of the MTF chart, and a crop sensor, say the 7D's 22.3mm, would be applicable on the chart to the area just above 11mm?

I've included a mock up,  shown in the attached image, where the red line would indicate the edge of the 7D's sensor, and the green line the outer edge of a full frame sensor. I'm just wondering if my understanding of this is correct, and that the 7D is using a much more uniform part of the lens than a FF sensor.

EOS Bodies / Canon EOS-1D X Available at B&H for Preorder

"From B&H
We have just been informed that B&H Photo has the new flagship Canon EOS-1D X available for preorder with the official price of $6799.

Shipping is expected to begin the last week of April, 2012.

Canon EOS-1D X Available for Preorder
Preorder at B&H now for $6799"

I notice that Canon's site no longer has the FCC disclaimer at the bottom of the 1D X page. Looks like it's been approved, so we should be seeing it soon.

I, for one, did not expect the 5D3 and the 1D X to hit the shelves at effectively the same time. Now I have to decide which to purchase first, if they had staggered it... the choice would have been made for me. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Lenses / Rumored 10 new lenses, 5 of which (CR) mentioned...
« on: March 09, 2012, 07:38:28 PM »
The other 5 though...

What are the chances we'll see a new 85mm f/1.2L, and a new 135mm f/2L?

I realize that the 85mm f/1.2L II is only 6 years old, but looking at the MTF chart - I think Canon could do astoundingly better today if it wanted to... not only with the image quality (chromatic aberrations/fringing), but also with the auto-focus, which a fair number of people complain is fairly slow compared to other L lenses.

The 135 f/2L, though, is 16 years old and could definitely use an update on all fronts.

These are two lenses I'm hoping to see updated in the near future, what lenses would you like to see updated?

(Note - we all know lots of you wanted a 24-70mm f/2.8L IS, so let's just take that off the table for now.)

The 5 lenses (CR) mentioned were...

- EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS II
- EF/EF-S 40 f/2.8 Pancake
- EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4X TC
- EF 35 f/1.4L II
- EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS II

Check out the review here...

Some observations from the review....

1. High Speed Sync supported for 1D X and 5D3 (but also worked on the reviewers 5D2 all the way to 1/8000sec)
2. Tested to a Range of 100m (340') worked flawlessly in an open field (Canon's Spec claims 30m/98')
3. There will be a non radio 600EX for countries that haven't adopted the 2.4gHz for unlicensed devices.

Personally, I think she needs a 1D X.
