- nothing wrong with the zeiss 21mm; really a great lens, but...

what's your prefered focal? look at your past pictures and get an idea of most used with the 17-40
It might be that 17 is the most used - then you might find yourself unhappy with just 21...you get the point

zoom or prime?
budget?
MF or AF?
to use on the FF body?
can you rent/borrow it?

I was able to rent the Zeiss 15mm and borrow (CPS) the TS-e 17mm
Both are beautifull, super-sharp/IQ, heavy and MF only - but the TS-e is more versatile.
the 17mm will allow you to stich shots to get as wide as a 11mm lens, but you will need a tripod, so the 15 wins in FOV.
The rest you know - price.
If I could afford it, I would get both, but right now I rather wait to see what Canon is going to do (or not) regarding the 14-24 rumour.
If you already used both, and liked either, then there is wrong way to go, considering you being a generalist.

wonder if you have a bad battery.
I got a loaner from CPS, and took it along a snowshoeing hike yesterday. I had it powered on the whole time, exposed to single digit temperatures - wind chill driven, and powdery snow. The is on the mounted 24-105 was on too.
Took 100 shots or so, and even after checking all the shots later in the comfort of a local bar, the charge was still above 85%
I find the grip ergonomics better than the 1dsmk3 or the 5Dmk2 with grip
Yes, the shutter it's a loud and solid clunk - and 12 fps scares nearby P&S shooters

Unless was an issue already happening and the seller did not disclose it, then you really have a reason to be upset.
The model has been discontinued; so can't be bought new and have a full warranty - well, fat chance anyway.
So, what could have been done? Some deeper research about item to buy, as " problems/complains with X"
Ask questions - plenty of them, if your search did turn out a few issues.
Ask if was sent to CPS/authorized repair recently - if not, ask to be sent now, or if you can send it to Canon upon receiving it under a evaluation agreement.
It sucks, but I don't think you can blame the buyer or for that matter the process of buying used - was just bad luck I guess, but still sucks.
On the brighter side, you now have a camera able to take 300k actuations

I will use it primarily for portrait. In daytime and in night time. But for the most part i'll be using strobes and ISO below 800. I just like the build quality of 1d bodies. It feels solid and well balanced with my 24-70 and 70-200.

So tell me, what exactly is wrong with the live view mode of 1ds mark iii? I wont say i'll never use it but i found myself using it very seldom with my 60d.

Any other issue/s that i should know in regards of how 1ds mark iii's flaws?

That's the problem with electronics - they loose value very fast
Look at LCD tv and monitors, smartphones and many other gadgets...if you get them as just released, you pay premium; if you wait too long, you buy outdated

with that said, prices seem to be holding on, either for new or used. Better yet, people are holding to them (5d mk3s), as not many used for sale on Ebay  this week.

The Zeiss 21mm T* ze mount has the AF confirmation chip - so is just a matter of slower manual focusing.
Don't have the 24 II 1.4, but as others said, below 2 -2.8 most WA are soft - pretty much the same as you find on the 35mm, which I have too.
I rather have wider, and yes, although 3mm does not seem quite much, well, it is
Now, if you really want to have both focals, and can live with MF, then consider the 24mm TSE II....but will be slower than the other two options, and possible $$$$ depending if you buy new or used.

hate to say it, but maybe the 14-24 will be a F/4 instead of 2.8.

I'm guessing a high quality f/4 version would be more attractive generally.  Lower price, smaller size & weight.  The ultra-wide range of 14-24 is very cool, but how many of us really need it to be f/2.8 and want to pay extra for it to be f/2.8 and want to carry the a big bulbous design that f/2.8 requires?  I'm sure some people want it to be f/2.8, but I'm guessing many would be as happy or even much happier with with an f/4 version.

I would be happier with the price and range, but 2.8 helps a bit in nightscapes. For daytime shots, not so much; after all general rule for it, places the apt in the f5.6-f11 range.
With that in mind, what about a 1.4 or 1.8 UWA prime? a 16mm focal would be fine with me

hate to say it, but maybe the 14-24 will be a F/4 instead of 2.8.
That would be indeed more in line of replacing the 17-40, and sort of leaving the 16-35 mk2 and other primes in "peace"; and along the way, the f/4 could be sharper to start with, and aiming towards landscapers.
After all, even f/4 is seldon used, unless you are into night shots or low light situations that iso can't really solve.

Just a quick add-on:
the rokinon/bowen/samyang cannot use circular filters...but, actually it can.
by accident/experiment with my IR camera - canon 40D, I was playing with different WA and settings to get diffeent results, when I decided to hanheld a filter just in front, just by the hood. Well, happen to be a  82mm filter, and for my surprise - and a small adjustment, was able to remain by itself , grasped by the lens hood.
I am sure some difraction and reflections issues may become very visible on a regular camera, but as last resource, it might be a 'trick" worth to consider.
I think it may even take the 77mm  and maybe 72's

Other big advantage of this lens, is not having such a heavy "comma' effect as the Canon's 14mm counterpart

When I saw this on CR, I thought if this doesn't get a bunch of ecstatic posts, then the forum members are just plain weird.

I guess I'm weird.

My least used lens is my ultra wide rectilinear.  I either use a 24-xxx rectilinear or my Sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye.  That fish is every bit an L-prime, and I find a fisheye is a much more useful lens than an ultrawide rectilinear.  I shot 18 times as many shots in 2012 with the fish as I did with my ultrawide rectilinear.  That number appears to be going up over time, as it's only 3x over the last 6 years.  I guess I'm getting more and more comfortable with the fish.

Oh, you're fine. An ultrawide zoom isn't what everyone wants.
But there are so many people here who have been posting repeatedly asking for the 14-24 and praising the Nikon, I wonder where they are hiding now. Even yesterday someone responded to the 50 1.4 IS post by saying where's the 14-24.

not hiding, probably just looking at their lens collection and selecting what to dump in order to get funds
I have been moving away from zooms, but if this one is anything close to the Nikon version, YES I WILL BUY 
btw - 24mm is not UWA, just WA
There is a niche for this lens, otherwise Canon would not consider producing it.

when searching on the web use "samyang" as brans instead...and the correction will be with lens itself. With Adobe, each camera you register, has it's own lens library.
Sure, apples and oranges, but same principle I will assuume, as I don't use Aperture.
