Canon General / Re: Compact camera for travel/everyday use

Maybe I'm projecting, but... it seems to me you're bummed out because you didn't get in on the EOS M deal. I mean, it has everything you asked for except the viewfinder... and this is a Canon-centric site. Just saying.

EOS-M / Re: Where is my backordered EOS-M w/22 STM lens?
« on: July 20, 2013, 08:41:41 PM »
Mine arrived this afternoon (the battery is still charging...); I was surprised to see that the box I received is a kit that includes the speedlight as well as the 22mm lens, i.e., the kit that's the current B&H EOS-M deal for $399, but they still charged me only $299.  Have others been receiving this too?  I hadn't planned to use the camera with any sort of flash, so I never noticed whether this was part of the original bargain, but this was a pleasant surprise.

Interesting, and lucky you! As I said above, my order status was upgraded to "In stock, sent to warehouse..." with plenty of time for it to be shipped on Friday. But it didn't. Now I'm wondering if the supply they got was the kit you received and some were inadvertently shipped out to fulfill the $299 deal orders before the mistake was realized. I'm hoping mine will ship on Monday, but your post has me thinking it might not.

Update: tracking # received on 7/21, and the camera shipped today. Cool! But I'm still wondering if anyone else got a similar SUPER DUPER deal as sdsr.

I've been paying attention to my B&H order too, and yeah, it's frustrating. I ordered the same kit on 7/5 when the expected availability date was 7/11. This was well before the $299 deal cutoff date of 7/9! I doubt there's anything nefarious going on here, just a delayed shipment from Canon. At least, that's what I'm hoping, because I already have the lens mount adapter. Patience is a virtue, as they say--but who in the hell are "they"?  ;)

Same story - ordered on 07/05 when it said expected availability was 07/11... Then it went to 07/18... Then it went to 07/25... I did live chat with Customer Service on 07/17 and they said they would have someone in Sales send me an email when to expect my camera... Never got the email, but thanks to this thread checked my order status and it has been sent to the warehouse... I'm just curious why orders placed on 07/09 are already shipping and mine is still being processed? Oh well, I hope it gets to me before I leave on vacation... :P
Well... hmmm... yesterday, along with others here, my 7/5 order was upgraded to "in stock... sent to the warehouse...", but unlike others I have yet to receive a shipping confirmation email. Unfortunately, that no doubt means my EOS M will not ship until Monday because they close at 2 PM on Fridays and are closed all day Saturday. I wonder what the hold up was?  :(

Just looked and B&H is currently listing the Black EOS M w/EF-M 22mm f/2 STM Lens as IN STOCK!

Hope they start shipping the older orders soon!

Hopefully this doesn't mean that first version EOS M owners are only going to get the "Hello World!", you had potential, but..., from Magic Lantern.

Just got an email from B&H that the EOS-M is discontinued:
Dear Customer

Thank you for your interest in the following item:

Canon EOS-M Mirrorless Digital Camera with EF-M 22mm f/2 STM Lens - Black
(B&H # CAEM22)

You are receiving this message because you asked to be notified when this item becomes available. We regret to inform you that this item has unfortunately been discontinued. Please check back on our website for similar or possible replacement items.

We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

Did you actually order the camera? The line "You are receiving this message because you asked to be notified when this item becomes available" says to me that you didn't. Therefore, your email means nothing to those of us who did order. The "discontinued" message (first with the white version) is popping up everywhere so that's no big surprise. What does bug me a bit, however, is that there's now no "expected availability" date for orders left to fulfill. Hopefully the 7/25 date is still a go...

I ordered at B&H Photo just as these went on backorder.  The expected availability date was 7/18.  Checked today and now 7/25.  I ordered on 7/7.  I think BH should have provided some explanation why the date was pushed out and whether I should have any degree of confidence that I can get one.  Is the goal to get me to cancel my order so they can sell it for $50 more?  I am starting to think I will never get the camera and lens at this price.

I've been paying attention to my B&H order too, and yeah, it's frustrating. I ordered the same kit on 7/5 when the expected availability date was 7/11. Sounds interesting.  But I have a dumb question (never used ML before).  Where is the link to the actual firmware file for the DR "upgrade"?

ML's download site has the latest 7D firmware from Dec. 2012.  I read the post and checked the .pdf... didn't see anything or links to the file in there.

You have to build it yourself.
Here is the code: https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/commits/all

If that is too much for you. Here is a link of it already built. Built by the magic lanterns forum member 'Lourenco'
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B7QlH_BH2m32aWFxbm9DNkliS0E&usp=sharing
The second link is for the 5D3 files

OK..I am just a photographer ...not a code writer.  Is this DR  revelation something that the average person can safely load onto their $3500 camera body without damaging it...or is this something that is proposed for a future release of Magic Lantern that we all can use?

The short answer is that if you don't know what you're doing you should wait until the DR feature is built into a stable ML release. Also note that the current "alpha" release for the 5D Mark III requires the older 1.1.3 firmware. For myself, I WILL NOT be loading ML into my Mark III until they release an alpha version that works with the current firmware, but I'm really looking forward to that day! Why? Because I've been running the stable version on my T2i for quite a while now and it has some GREAT features--for video and stills.

FTR, I'll quote myself here from my earlier answer to your question...

Cool! AMAZING, actually. I've been using ML on my T2i for a while now and IT IS THE BOMB! I've been waiting for the first official "stable" release to install it on my 5DM3, but this feature will get me to load an alpha release when it's ported. I'm also looking forward to what they're fiddling with on the EOS M!

I REALLY want to like my new EOS M, I REALLY do... but I just looked on the B&H site and the "Expected availability" date, which was originally listed as "July 11 2013" for those of us who hesitated but still got in in time for the $299 deal, got pushed to "July 18 2013", and now says "July 25 2013"... I'm hoping the new date is for a second batch, but my sense is that the whole shipment has been delayed. Hell, maybe if it takes long enough the factory will have time to retool and sneak in the new Dual Pixel AF technology! ;)

EOS-M / Re: Do memory cards matter?
« on: July 15, 2013, 09:57:42 PM »
JPAZ, I think you'll want to take advantage of the "UHS-I" distinction with some SD cards because the M is compatible with the "Ultra High Speed" class. A common complaint about the 5D Mark III's SD slot is that it was NOT made compatible.

BTW, it SUCKS that the M's lens adapter's price went up so much! Money in, money out.

Ah, the pleasures of the market economy:  Reduce the price; increase demand; create need for more accessories; raise price on those accessories; sell accessories.  Of course we will all gripe when the Mii comes out and we have to buy more!

I don't fault Canon or any of the dealers for this.  It is, after all, a Capitalistic society we live in.

Nor do I, and yes it is. I was just saying.

Mine hasn't shipped yet, but it's currently in process... If the M is equal to or trumps my much loved T2i then I'll be a very HAPPY CAMPER!
