Software & Accessories / Audio and 5D MKIII

Is it advisable to use NTG2 into the H4N or just do NTG2 into the 5D MKIII?  Also what options are there for run and gun situations?  Can I find a bracket/mount that will affix both H4N and NTG2 on the camera so I can be as mobile as possible?

Are lavaliers necessary?

Lenses / Zoom vs. Prime...or both? - Documentary & Run/Gun Work

Greetings folks!

Looking to accumulate a slow growing collection of lenses for run/gun work as well as some work in controlled environments for interviews etc. for documentary work.

What do you guys think of the following:

1. 24-70
2. 24-105
3. 70-200

Which is the best/most useful for a starting zoom.  I don't think my Tamron 17-50 cuts it, unless I need to give it a second chance since I'll be upgrading to the 5D MKIII (from 60d)

Also this is what I already have:

A. Canon 50 1.8
B. Tamron 17-50 2.8
C. Samyang 85 1.8

I'm looking to do most of the video/interview run and gun stuff by myself so that should be kept in mind.

Do you guys have opinions on buying Canon Refurbished?

$2800 for 5D MK III
$1800 for 5D MK II

Thoughts on better deal between these 2?  Other Companies beat these refurbished prices?

Greetings all :)

I have loved the informative and polite feedback offered by everyone on this forum.  You convinced me to go from a camcorder to a DSLR (60D) and now I am thinking of halting my investment into the 60D to do an upgrade.

Currently I have a 60D, Canon 50mm 1.8, Tamron 17-50 2.8, Sigma 85 2.8 lenses

I have made some great progress in filming/editing and need to learn a lot more!  Just finally got my glidecam!!!

I feel though that the 60D is limited in its capability especially since I've always loved the quality of the 5D Mark II and the GH2.  I think the most basic difference to me is that the 5D Mark II is better in low light and the GH2 has better image quality when properly lit, which is most of the time...

I am leaning toward the GH3, and hoping for a future hack.

I wonder what everyone's opinions are?

I am a hobbyist, love shooting adventures into NYC, interviewing/documentary, and making small videos for family etc. "filmic" style

Technical Support / 60D Not Autofocusing :(

Greetings!

Recently I took some photographs on a little excursion with some friends.  I noticed that when pressing on the shutter button halfway it does not Autofocus.

I have a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 and a Canon 50mm 1.8

Both had autofocus engaged on the actual lens.  I could not find any settings or buttons that I might have disengaged by accident.

I normally use the video mode, so getting into photography is new and exciting.

Good Morning,

I have the following lenses for my 60D:

Tokinon 17-55 (2.8)
Canon 50 (1.8)
Sigma 85 (1.4)

I was curious on a few things (i've used google but haven't found a centralized easy read on these questions):

1. What is the main purpose of filters etc. for lenses
2. Will adding a filter, etc., help bring clarity/sharpness to my focused images in video mode?
3. How best should they be applied (indoor vs. outdoor)

Video & Movie / Basic Workflow?

Greetings all,

I am a 60D owner and use a Mac Laptop.

I use Magic Bullet Grinder to turn my files into ProRes LT (with 1080p proxie files) but not sure exactly how to use these files in FCPX.

There are some stunning videos done in post production with the same equipment.

Was curious on a simpler linear (step 1,2,3,4) process from importing video, converting it, using proxies, adding effects/corrections, exporting for both DVD & Vimeo/YouTube.

Thanks in advance (yes i used google but have yet to find a clear coherent and simple linear workflow process)

EOS Bodies - For Video / Canon 60D Video Images look SOFT!

Later this evening or tomorrow I will post footage showing that my video footage looks soft on my Canon 60D.  Even compared to the same model the video looks soft relative to video clips on Vimeo & YouTube of other users.

I use:

Tokina 17-55 (2.8)
Canon 50 (1.8)
Sigma 85 (1.4)

Regardless of the lens i use my images seem "soft" and not "sharp/clear"  I could try correcting it in post production but doubt that would be the issue.

thoughts/experiences/comments?

Hello all,

I am using my 60D to record sporting events, documentaries with my students, etc.  I wen to BH Photo yesterday and the very nice sales associate pointed me to the NTG-2 combo.  When I arrived home and set everything up I realized that I may be deficient in what I need.

The level of the recording and the quality is complete rubbish going into the camera.  I've read elsewhere that people plug their Rode Mics into an H1 or H4N, as well as a Tascam product of similar capabilities.

Does anyone have a good link/video that can clearly outline a nice "workflow" for audio when using DSLR.

I use a Secure Digital 32gb Class 10 card.  My video has been stopping recording after 8 seconds or so and is not 4gb in size.

I searched the form and google and have been unable to find a solution!  Any thoughts/ideas/fixes?

Lenses / Videography vs. Photography Lenses

Greetings all,

I am new to the DSLR world and recently acquired a Canon 60D.

I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8 and a Canon 50 1.8

Low light performance is decent as well as "zoom" capability

I'd like to get a lens, or two, for a modest price that will allow me to capture better low light images and video as well as more zoom capability...

I am not sure if a Tamron or Sigma 17-200mm 2.8 is going to be feasible for video or low light although it will have the zoom and I know that a Rokinon 85mm 1.4 will be much better in low light but may not have the closeness from a  distance that the 70-200 would give...are these both lenses that would solve me video issues?

Thoughts?

Main shooting types:

1. Narrative/Documentary
2. Sports
3. B-Roll (city shots, scenes, etc.)

Greetings and Happy Holidays!

I made the purchase finally, a Canon 60D.  I have a Tamron 17-50 (2.8) and a Canon 50mm (1.8).  I have not had much success importing/exporting video footage from indoors (moderate to low light situations).  Much of the video seems to carry a lot of noise or grain.

Any suggestions in importing, settings, lens suggestions (was thinking of getting a Rokinon 85mm and/or 30mm 1.4)

Lenses / prime vs. zoom

Greetings Gents & Ladies,

I am purchasing a Canon 60D this upcoming "Black Friday." 

I am in need of advice for lens options:

I'd like the ability to get GREAT DOF on close-ups etc. 

My primary mode:  VIDEO

My primary content: Narrative/Documentary types (secondary = sports)

Question Primes vs. Zooms?


Is it better to get a 70-200 2.8 L (no IS) and have that for about 6 months

or

Is it better to get a 50mm 1.4 along with a 11-16mm for about a year and maybe save for the 70-200

Once again this is mostly for video

Greetings all,

I was wondering if there is a standard fix for the nasty moire/aliasing that plague the Canon DSLR line for video?

If not then I may be forced to go with a GH2.  My last post many of you convinced me that the 60D was the way to go with a few fast primes and a nice zoom.

Now, after watching many videos I am very concerned with the moire/aliasing issue.

Thoughts?
