so MattBice.... can you do the conversion in LR too?
to compare the noise in your image when processed with LR or DPP.

i will try it myself when im at home.. but there are still 6 hours of work ahead of me.  ::)

This isn't a very good test because you have nothing to compare it against.  You need to take a D800 and do the same shot and run it through the same process.

this is not about the D800.. it´s about lightrooms RAW conversion of 5D MK3 files.

well to a lot of canon people around here including me, they probably sell nothing at all for the next 4 years, how's that working for Canon? .

lets wait and see... not all hope is lost. :)

work an the analog digital converter.

reduce the read noise to get better dynamic range.
reducing read noise will be good for pushing shadows too.

God pixel peepers are a joke. Ansel Adams surely never questioned this type of crap.

mentioning ansel adams doesn´t make you one.  :D

when it´s from nikon it can not be good .. right?
in fact people who can´t admit that other companys build great cameras are a sad joke.

if someon had posted the same test but with a great result for a canon camera, i bet you (and others) would be all praise and glory.  it´s ridiculous.

especially as this is clearly a forum/website focused on the GEAR side of photography.
only when nikon, sony etc. gets some praise the "ansel adams posse" make an appearance with the "but gear does not make good pictures" argument.

well yeah im sure we all heard it a trilion times by now... it´s not as if these people tell something new.  ::)

Yes, I always push my shadows 5 stops so that would really be noticeable.

sorry but you react like stupid fanboy.

the fact that you can push the shadows 4-5 stops does not mean you have to.
but it´s fantastic that you can do it.

only a fanboy or blind can be unimpressed by the sony sensor at low iso.

seeing the results from fredmiranda and LL  i have to say the D800 has an incredible sensor.

with 36 MP... and that shadow noise.. just WOW.
something i would not have believed 3 month ago.

canon can have all video improvements in the world.. i care about image quality.
for landscape or studio i also don´t care much about AF performance.

in fact i would be 100% fine with the 5D MK2 and just a sensor like the D800.
it doesn´t need to be 36 MP for me. but with that perfromance.. i can only say ..why not?

you guys live in london or a different part of the UK?

i travel around europe a lot... and as i wrote in my first posting, nowhere i felt more unwelcome by the authorities.

For clarity, I make my living advising one of the largest UK government Departments on the correct application and implementation of UK information and privacy laws, so I'm not exactly uninformed about this.

i really don´t care how your laws are.. im not an law expert for any country i visit.
it may be that the laws are fine as they are... but i care about what i experience.

if a security guard or officer in a foreign country approaches me im cautious.

Disagree that entry level users are all green boxers though. The reason I use a 550D is that it fits my budget.

not all but the majority, from my own experience.
it´s the ENTRY level market. that is where most people start with a DSLR system.

i have many friends who use a P&S camera for years and they know NOTHING about aperture, dof, dynamic range etc.

a friend who bought the 600D, after my advice, asked me after 3 weeks where the ZOOM button is. and he is no dumbass.. he is a chemical engineer. i told him he has to ZOOM manually by rotating a ring on the lens. all i got in response was " P&S can do that with the click on a button".

i have told him a dozend times that MP are not the all important factor for good images.
really i can´t count how often i expained image quality to him... still when we talk about new cameras, i know he will say at one point "but camera xy has more MP, must be better then, not?".   ::)

it is in peoples heads and it´s hard to get that out.

my friend is still learning and i will get it into his head.. but that´s the reality in the mass consumer market.

so i guess nikon has a good stand marketing wise.

Canon has nothing to worry about. Canon is still pWning Nikon at cameras and market share.

too bad only fanboys care about brand sales... i care about image quality and i could not care less who sells the most cameras.

in fact i would think if canon had to fear something it would be better for the customers.

I'd say its very possible that the 60D will inherit the 7D's AF in response to the D7000 which could potentially lead to some feed down on the xxxD line.

i think you mean the 70D.

My math may be wrong (never has been my strongest point), but I don't think 36 is a multiple of 8...  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

oh it is... 4.5 x 8 = 36   ;)

Nothing personal, but I think Astro has problem with reading ;)

no you have.
get some infos about the new AF sytems and you will see why the prism lump has to be bigger.

there is not a single word about the AF sensor being located in the pentaprism lump.

I'm ready to accept DxOMark camera measurement results (their scoring is a mess, let's forget about it).

But anyone caring to explain their 70-200 IS II resolution measurement?

the nikon fanboy who works for DXO is hand selecting bad canon lenses.  :)
it´s hard to find a bad exemplar but maybe he dropped it a few times.
