Landscape / Fluffed it! Moon and ISS
« on: October 10, 2013, 05:38:33 PM »
You could see the International Space Station fly across the sky (it moves fast!) and across the moon tonight from parts of Ireland. Unfortunately I fluffed the photo... I exposed for the moon, not realising that the ISS would be a lot less bright until I reviewed the photos afterwards. A longer telephoto would have helped, but I don't have one.
So, if you ever get to see this, over-expose for the moon or be smarter than me....
The ISS is the few pixels in about the centre of the image....

Animal Kingdom / Need help - photographs on dull days

I need help....
For work I have to take photos and can't choose the weather
I was wondering how to make the best of photos taken in flat light like the example I attached

I find the areas of the picture where the subject is against the sky particularly problematic

Any advice on post-processing or exposure (preferably without flash) would be gratefully received

Third Party Manufacturers / Lowepro Nova 170 - will it fit?
« on: June 16, 2012, 03:40:29 PM »
For the Olympics, I need a small bag to fit:
70-200 2.8 IS II
2x converter
+-580EX for focus assist (not essential as I am only going to one indoor event)

The bag must be less than 25L and the smaller the better

The Lowepro Nova 170 AW looks like it might fit the bill - can anyone let me know if it will fit this gear?

Thanks for any help!

In lists of lenses compatible with the 1.4x and 2x Canon extenders, I don't see the 100mm 2.8L Macro....
Is this because it would be an unusual (stupid?) combination, or because they don't work together?

Lighting / Lighting for macro shots of animal eyes
« on: May 10, 2012, 02:06:49 PM »
Slightly obscure/specialist question
I am looking for the best way to light animal eyes in macro shots of them...
Ring flash reflects in the cornea, and can obscure the area of interest (these photos are to show problems in the eyes for a veterinary audience)
Off camera flash works some with a single hand-held flash held almost at 90 degrees (get one reflection instead of a ring, obscuring less of the eye) - but multiple off camera flashes gets very clunky to try and get close to a moving target and can scare off the animals (and their owners)
So the question boils down to:
Is there a way to avoid reflections on a macro photo of a reflective surface, in a handheld solution?

Thanks for any advice

United Kingdom & Ireland / Final rules for Olympics Spectators?
« on: April 27, 2012, 08:20:24 AM »
Does anyone know the final rules for cameras for Olympics Spectators. They were supposed to be released last week, but I can't find them.
I have heard rumors of all of the following - hoping if there is a rule, it's i)
i) Camera and lens < 12 inches long
ii) lens < 6 inches long
iii) no detachable lens
iv) No focal length > 300mm

Any insights?

Could someone give me their impressions (and post a sample?) of the Rayflash Ringflash Adapter for Canon 580EX
Thanks in advance

Lenses / New official Canon iOS App from Canon Singapore detailing Lenses
« on: January 03, 2012, 05:59:41 AM »
For those of you with iPhones / iPads - Canon Singapore released an App on 22 Dec 2011 detailing all the currently available Canon Lenses. It has nice features like Depth of Field calculations etc.
Despite being from Canon Singapore, it appears to be available worldwide (I think?)

Software & Accessories / Is it worth updating 5D2 to 2.1.1 firmware?
« on: January 02, 2012, 04:35:35 AM »
I have a new 5D2 which has 2.0.9 firmware. My MacBook has OsX 10.7.2 on it - so EOS Utility doesn't work. Is it worth me buying an external compact flash reader solely to update to 2.1.1?
(or is there another way to update without a CF reader?)

Lighting / Tips for using Speedlite 199A
« on: December 25, 2011, 04:47:01 PM »
Got a 5D2 with the 24-105 L for Xmas  :)
Any tips for getting it to work with the Speedlite 199A?

In the few shots I have taken so far, it seems easy to overexpose with the flash (so far just mounted on the camera)
Even with the supplied diffuser, flash set to "red", bounced off the ceiling - I am struggling to find settings that work
The best I have found so far is manual 1/60 f7.1 ish - however, it is a bit hit and miss and I have missed a couple of shots of Christmas present unwrapping....

Obviously the best solution is to buy a new flash... but until the coffers are replenished, any tips on making this fairly ancient flash play nicely with the wonderful 5D2?
