EOS Bodies / Re: Canon Mirrorless [CR1]
« on: February 10, 2011, 06:46:33 AM »
I think an issue for me is cost and control.
I just watch a review for the GH2 and it has a touch screen on the back. Blah. I actually have some hope for Nikon's EVIL because it suppose to be geared more toward the pro. Hopefully dual control wheels and some nobs. I don't care if it looks ugly.

I think EVIL camera's can be fine but everyone except Leica seems to be pointing their brands at the casual user.

And the problem with that is? Leica are producing digital cameras that are consistent with the film cameras that they produced. So to are Canon and Nikon.

It is not proper to judge what Leica does by what Canon/Nikon do, nor expect Leica to do as they do.

I didn't say there was a problem with it. I was simply stating that fact.
I'm not sure what your point was...

Of course rebates are coming since I bought a 7D last week...

I've actually looked at that camera before for that purpose.
It's more pricey than I'd like. For $400 I lug my 7D around.

I had a similar thought.  But I balanced that against the shots I would continue to miss because I didn't lug along the 7D and a lens or two, and also the fact that while expensive, it's cheaper than most of the lenses I'd want to use on a dSLR, and decided to get it...

You make good points. It is a topic I'd like to revisit when perhaps I'm making more money as a photography. I'm just trying to build more business and EF glass right now.

I think a good FF range finder would be great. But I will never happen. I don't think there is that much market for it just because it would have to be expensive, being FF. I have found myself wanting the 8 Grand to drop on a Leica M9.

But I sometimes I could see how it would be nice to have a great small walking around camera.

PowerShot S95.  Reasonable zoom range, shoots RAW, fits in the pocket of my jeans.

I've been trying to figure out for a while now if the 5D3 would be announced before the 1Ds. I think with all the rumor about Canon changing up the 1Ds and 5D series it's hard to tell. But I think the 1Ds4 will come first this year followed by the 5D3. That's a good call.

I would possibly bump the 5D3 into Q3-4 2011 but other than that I think that's pretty good.

I wouldn't expect a 7D2 before Q4 2012 either. At least I hope not. I just bought a 7D.

Well, I don't think it's that people want the Rebels to such. But all the new tech comes out on the higher end cameras first and then trickles down to the Rebels later. Which tends to make Rebel announcements a little boring and non interesting. There isn't a feature of the 600D that we haven't already seen in another camera.

I don't really care too much about the mirrorless systems that are all the rage now. But Canon would be foolish not to release something along these lines.

The 60D display is marginally better than the 7D. The 920k pixel displays are about as good as you can get.
I just came from a XSi with a 240k pixel display. The 7D is a thing of beauty. I think you are being a little too critical.

the more pixels the better cause it makes it easier to evaluate the sharpness of a picture. it's not only the pixels though: let's not forget the 7D's display is not 3:2 so it doesn't match its sensor size...

but yea, maybe I'm too critical. the 7D is a great camera for sure. it just didn't make sense for me, personally, to buy it. I will rather wait for the MK II.

Well, I understand that more pixels is better. I'm just saying that at 920k pixels the 60D's extra 100k pixels don't make much of a difference. I think it would take some serious peeping to tell the difference.

However, the aspect ratio is a valid point. I'm not sure why they haven't been matching the ratio of the sensor until now. I have a friend with a T2i and it's a nice feature.

All in all, both are fantastic screens.

It does seem as though Canon is playing a little game to see how close they can push the Rebel line and the XXD line together. And they've actually done a pretty good job and skirting the line between the two lines.

It does seem like it might have happened by accident though. Canon thought:
"Ok, let's use the 18mp sensor from the T2i and 7D in the new 60D. Perfect"

-6 months later

"Time for a new Rebel.... Crap"

Now the question is, if I get it now, will there be a new model in two weeks (making a point, could be 3-6 months) or is it a safe bet?

...60D is newer than the older 7D so you get a MUCH better display...
...I wanted to get the 7D as well, but I just didn't like the idea of buying an old model and I hated the display...

My guess is it will be a very very minor upgrade. Same sensor probably. Articulating screen. New button layout. And apparently the new name plate, which Canon seems very proud of.
What new name plate? 550D's looks like the 7 and 60D's. So there's not much new about it. ;)

Wasn't there a story a few months ago about a newly designed name plate for the new Rebel? I thought I remembered reading that.

I'd say there is no reason to hold of unless you are interested in a 5D3 possibly.

I actually just got my 7D Tuesday. I upgraded from a Rebel XSi
I have to say, I love love love this thing. It's heavy (a good thing), solid, fast, sharp, detailed and feature packed.

On my XSi I just used the center AF point and recomposed. But, so far, I haven't been able to confuse the 7D's 19 point array. I'm sure it's possible for it to be wrong sometimes, but it seems to know what I want to focus on every time. It makes composition much faster.

I don't think they will add a flash transitter to a camera that is already too similar to the 60D. I also doubt they'd debut DigicV in a Rebel. But, I don't know, is there any precedent for that?

It's possible they might redesign that 9-point diamond AF system. Maybe add a few more points but still only have 1 cross type in the center.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Why not make the sensor go all they way to the edges of the lens? The you could switch between portrait and landscape at the touch of a button. And it would be FF in both directions.
