Video & Movie / Re: timelapse. how they do this

I was just guessing that if you, for example, make consequential 30 sec long exprosures you will add a segment to the top and delete a segment from the tail of the trail and it won't be a smooth movement as seen here

Canon General / Re: Canon Can't Even Make a Billion Dollars Anymore
« on: October 26, 2012, 01:01:43 PM »
everyone thinks that they are a business expert all of a sudden now that these numbers came out.

one of the biggest problems is that Canon is based in a country whose currency is rising compared to the markets where they sell products.  that means that even if they sold the exact same amount of everything, and spent the exact same amount they would still pull in less revenue and less profit.  on top of that, the world economy is down which means less disposable for most consumers and less business to business sales.  together, that equals less sales.  to top it all off, smartphones are completely eating up the point and shoot market.

people - canon is not taking huge hits because you think the new 5d cost too much.  its not because you think the 24-70 costs too much.  these prices are very equal to what their predecessors were in terms of japanese currency - but now the rest of the world's is worth less compared to what it was, so things cost more.  also, canon sells a lot more than just 5Diii's and 24-70 ii's...

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Buying from Switzerland
« on: September 20, 2012, 05:31:01 AM »
In most cases at custom control it all comes down to a matter of luck or to how picky that particular officer is. They see such things every day, it is a part of their work and they are used to every possible trick one might say.
For example they could check the number of actuations on you camera. If it says 75 shots taken it will be difficult to prove that you purchased it so-long-time-ago in your home country.

I do not believe possible that they check serials, bcs (apart from being very un-practical), if you bought camera  in your home country. and paid VAT to the vendor, and this very same vendor imported the item from (say) switzerland what will happen? Will you have to prove all such things to the officer? Will you have to pay VAT twice? HIghly unlikely IMO.

if you get searched when you get back home they can find carton boxes & accessories and ask therefore for Tax payment (typically VAT if you live in another european country).

One solution could be go there, buy the camera/lens etc, flatten the boxes and mail them back to yr address. Then if you get stopped for custom control simply say that the camera is yours.

Check for warranty services in your country though. It is not granted that a swiss warranty card will be accepted in your local repair center.

Anyways if you are into importing things it is usually easier and cheaper to buy items via internet from hk and have them sent to you by courier (with a lower value declared, which would result in lower taxation)

EOS Bodies / Re: A New 100-400 & Coming Announcements [CR2]
« on: July 25, 2012, 08:20:07 AM »
current model is scarcely available worldwide and price has been steadily picking up over the last two months
I bet my 2 cents that an announcment is not very far. With IS it will be above 2k

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L Officially Discontinued?
« on: May 24, 2012, 05:48:09 AM »
also the 5d2 in kit w/the old 24-70 are nowhere to be found bcs all vendors jumped on those in order to unbundle the lens. It is very odd how ppl never realize that items which are being discountinued usually raise in price, especially if it is the case of a very popular lens/camera. In the meanwhile also prices of the used items are driven up accordigly (as a general trend).

There is nearly always a very low price point which usually occurs months BEFORE of the actual EOL announcement and is due to manufacturer's dumping excess stocks to the market. When you see a good low price it is time to buy in volumes and then wait.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D3 Shipment in Europe?!?!
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:29:28 AM »
Many european countries are still dry. One major german official distributor told me he had still to see one kit delivered by canon germany. All what they had was coming from HK gray market. Same is happening in Italy. HK is also dry at the moment. There were plenty of 24-105 kits and bodies there until last week but now zero. Prolly this has to do with the light leak fix thing, even though Canon sales strategy has been recently somewhat confusing. They have raised prices pretty much on every popular item (DSLR lenses & cameras) and availability in general is extremely low. OL good marketing tricks.

Wow! Where was the first shot taken? Looks fantastic.

Great photos on this thread btw, makes me cringe when I look at my own photos :(

Thanks! It is taken in Hampi, India. I have recently put some more photos into a slideshow, here

(to have the correct link just remove the space after the word "vimeo". CR forum does not allow embedding of vimeo videos for some reasons. Any workaround?)
