EOS Bodies / and the real D800 competitor is ....
« on: March 14, 2012, 04:51:24 AM »
....5D2!!!! aka the poor man's FF

Canon is flooding the market with these. In Italy prices as low as 2300 eur for the 24-105 kit. Smart marketing move, since D800 are nowhere to be seen. 5D3 will be hitting distributors next week, with several pallets of cameras already allocated by canon.

Availability to the market, more price choice on FF and production capacity seem to be canon's weapons of choice against D800

check also pixass.de. he does not have an automatic system for VAT but if you mail in he will probably tell you how to do. he's also direct to canon so likely on the top of the waiting list.

Also pixmania.com in france is set up for VAT number holders and all the prices there are excl. VAT

the official MSRP in eurozone is 3299eur at launch (wich is roughly 3500USD + VAT)

pixxass.de is direct to canon, and they put the body up today for 3299.00
swiss prices are very similar

all retailers at launch will have same prices maybe except Italy where VAT laundry/fraud is national sport so lowest retail prices will likely be there

check whats happening now on 5D2 + 24105
first link italian price aggregator, second german. go figure where it's better to buy in europe (there are some risks involved tho)

thats just ridiculous... you are asking canon to compete against whom.. themselves?
The so-called "HK low prices" are supported by canon only, and it's only canon to be held responsible for any pricing discrepancy in different world markets. It's canon only that when needs to get rid of some overstock sells merchandise below official price listing to HK brokers. Where do you think these guys get their merchandise from?
We are grey market importers in our country. I do buy regularly from HK and my broker there always alerts me when there is some kind of "special offer" with some kind of "minimum order quantity" attached to it. Where do these offers come from?

comparison of euro vs USD prices make little sense since in most european countries we have a thing called VAT !
It's a hefty +20% (depending on countries) in taxes only

So if you take 3299 EUR MSRP, make -20% from there it goes 2640 EUR, which at today's rate is 3511 USD
so no surpriese here!

5D2 in Italy was a pain in the ass to get. Announced sept 2008, we had very limited supply till feb/march 2009.
Then more or less ok till june 2009 then camera disappeared again just before summer hot season.

But this is also a marketing gimmick and not only the capacity to produce or not. Marketers love to have people desire something which they can't get. The price and expectation remain high, the perception of the value of the item is at the highest possible point. On the contrary high inventories create low prices and bad feelings into buyers. So be sure that, also with the 5d3, volumes to market will be accurately tweaked by Canon, based on a well tested strategy (and they are masters at it: look at the 5d2 after 3.5 years how many they are still selling)

EOS Bodies / Re: *UPDATE* Here's an Invite for March 2, 2012
« on: February 29, 2012, 03:14:07 PM »
well they better speed things up bcs, based on what my nikon supplier is telling me, first batches of d800 are on the way to him from nikon europe. so canon better hurry up. It could even be the same 5d2 case when we had intermittent supplies at the beginnning with very few units shipped for the first 2/3 months, way way below requests. Given the expectations I think it will be not easy to get a camera immediately after realease. It also depends in which part of the world you are located since certain markets will be served earlier.

Generally speaking in european canon channel now there are plenty 5D2, zero 600d, zero 60d  (already since 2/3 weeks) and a few 7D

Where does this invite come from?
I'm from Italy and I know nothing about this event, nor anything is written on the Canon Italy webpage...
Still it's written in Italian...quite weird, isn't it?

yea right. things happen just under our nose and we are the last to know.
how sad
