EOS Bodies / Re: Canon Cinema EOS 4K Camera [CR1]

I don't see why people would think this would be in the same price range as the 5D Mark lll. It's probably going to cost the same as a C300. Canon does not want to give quality video to the likes of us poor folk.

22 MP is overkill on a APS-C sensor. We need better low-light capabilities, not worse.

I'm expecting clean images at 1600 and useable images up to 3200.

Completely - easily - doable with the 7D right now.

Video is not clean at ISO 1600.  3200 looks awful.

ISO as clean as the 5D3 & 1D4

5D Mark lll not possible, but comparable to the 1D Mark lV is more realistic. The 1D Mark lV is only about 1 step better in ISO performance than the 7D, so I don't see why Canon couldn't improve the ISO performance by 1 stop on the 7D Mark ll with current sensor and processing improvements.

The noise was my major gripe with 7D.

I'm expecting clean images at 1600 and useable images up to 3200.

How about a lock for the mode dial?  I'm always inadvertently changes modes when I change lenses, etc.

Agreed. I've had that happen to me too many times with my T2i.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Is the 5DM3 better for video?
« on: March 03, 2012, 05:10:06 AM »
I am a T2i looking to upgrade to full frame at some point, and to this point, I have spent my money on lenses. So, Nikon is not an option.

Only based on the Canon PR, I see a few claims specific to video:

  • 29 minute 59 second record length - auto splits 4GB files
  • less moirĂ©
  • 720p 60fps
  • all I-Frame compression
  • embedded timecode

They also had some audio improvements including a headphone jack, but I use a field recorder and don't do audio on the camera.

Unless the moiré performance is truly dramatic, I may opt for one of the used 5DM2 we are likely to see from upgraders.

But like everyone else say, we'll know more when people actually get these in their hands and report back.

Word is the moire is reduced to the point that it won't ruin shots. It's dramatically improved over the Mark ll.

I'd agree if the camera's built in compression was AVCHD at 24Mb's, but we are talking about H.264 All-I at 90Mb's, so what's the problem? Also, I'm sure an eventual Magic Lantern hack may improve this even more.

Yes, 18 MP's is fine on crop sensor bodies. I want to be able to shoot clean video at ISO 1600 and hopefully a new 18 MP sensor with the DIGIC 5+ processor will make that a possibility. If you need megapixels buy a Hasselblad.

I saw a 1080p clip on youtube and the footage looks solid.

These new Canon prices scare me. I can see Canon releasing a really nice 7D successor and expecting people to pay $2500 for a crop sensor HDSLR.  LOL

EOS Bodies / Re: Videographers happy with 5D Mark III?

My only gripe is that the 5D Mark lll doesn't have a swivel LCD. I guess Canon figures people using it for video will be using external monitors with this camera.

Need to see actual footage before I make any personal opinions about it being the ultimate HDSLR for video, but the specs look great.

Headphone jack is a huge plus.

If the moire and aliasing are reduced to the point of not ruining a shot, then I can see a lot of 5D Mark ll owners jumping ship.

I'm personally more interested in what improvements Canon will be making with the next generation of crop sensor HDSLR's in regards to video.

The C300 is seriously over priced. It won't sell well. The Sony FS-100 is definitely in the same ball park and it does 1080p 60 FPS unlike the C300, and it costs 1/3rd as much.

Many cinematographers want a full frame video camera, that's why everyone is waiting for the next 5D. The c300 is 1.5x cropped, which is fine; but full frame video has a unique look.

Plus, for many video shooters such as myself, going back to a video camera ergonomic would really suck. The DSLR form factor is so much more liberating and easy to shoot with than the traditional lunch box style video camera. I can't go back, so I am waiting for the 5D3 or preferable the 4K DSLR video hybrid. I would have no problem paying $5000 for the 4K Hybrid if it's good.

Agreed. Hopefully the 5D Mark lll will make us video guys excited.
