EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Do you miss APS-C?
« on: December 17, 2012, 10:51:02 PM »
Not one bit. Upgraded from a T2i to a 5D3. Thought I would miss the flip-screen too and I don't. It all depends on what you're using it for.

I've got a B+W multi-coat super thin something or another on my 24-70L v1 and I've shot with it and without it in bright sun and  other things. I cannot tell the difference in IQ, especially attached to my 5D3. $80 for a filter is way better than worrying about scratches on my front glass.
I realize this isn't the 70-200, but when I get mine (have rented 3x), it will get a filter too.

Nice images. You probably got to see more in person than a lot of people ever will, with all the turmoil and such going on in that part of the world.

Are there any new and reputable reviews published on the internet yet for this lens?

I'm really surprised at the use of f/2.8 out of everything there. I thought for sure f/4 would be the most prominent.

Um, guess its been awhile since you built a PC. SSDs are the fastest consumer hard drive solution out there. Win7 boots in about 8 seconds or less. =)

Canon General / How to arrange new SSD and regular HDD
« on: December 02, 2012, 02:03:32 PM »

I have a new (to me) PC that was built by a friend that has 2x 128GB SSD drives in it. My old computer's drives were 500GB SATA II's, one for my OS/apps/photos and a second for purely photo backup. I'm running Win7.

My question is how should I setup my drives? My thoughts were to  install Win7 on the first SSD and all my other apps like Lightroom and such on the second. Then use the mechanical SATA drives to put all my photos and such to work off of.

I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

5D3 + 50 1.8 II

Canon General / Re: Travel to Thailand/Laos should I bring my 5d mkiii?
« on: November 17, 2012, 07:54:07 PM »
I just went on a trip to Louisiana (New Orleans and Baton Rouge), but before I took my brand new 5D3 and my other gear, I called up my insurance agency and scheduled (their word) coverage of my gear to be included on my homeowner's policy. For $93/yr ($7.75/mo) added on, I have the following protected if I drop it/break it/someone steals it/etc:

-5D Mark III
-24-70L lens
-50 1.8 II lens
-B&W UV filter
-480EXII flash

They schedule it right then and there, making it effective immediately. If you have all of your receipts that you can scan over to them, that makes it even quicker. Talk about peace of mind when it goes through Xrays or you trip on a rock and drop it.

Also, just a tip for any of you who purchased any gear from say Adorama or whoever's eBay store: If you send in your eBay receipt, *even if* you purchased a new in box item, there's a good chance your insurance agency won't take it. At this point, they will only insure the camera up to the price you purchased it (like those of us that got the 5D3 at a great sale price of $2749) and not MSRP. However, Adorama Customer Support was nice enough to send me an official receipt when I asked. If the insurance company still won't go full MSRP on an item in this case, tell 'em its bullsh#t that you're getting shafted because you bought something on sale and they'll probably say OK.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope people find it useful.  (edit: I didn't see that AdamF made a comment to this idea too prior to posting)

Canon General / Re: Photography websites. Where are you posting?
« on: November 17, 2012, 07:33:33 PM »
All of my photos that I post are on Flickr. Only a few are on 500px, but that's only because I don't want to post in several different places. I post my extra favorites to 500px for more exposure, but even then its few and far between.

I recently read that there is quite a community on Google+ of all places.

Two more lenses that I don't need...where is the new 50mm and/or 14-24 Mr. Canon >:(

I'm with you. I'd rather see a new 50mm, in L and non-L flavors with updated features. I have a love/hate with my 50 1.8 II.

1995 - Dad's old Pentax film camera off and on with my Kodak consumer camera
1998 - Canon G3 (which got a LOT of use)
2010 - Canon Rebel T2i, first entry into DSLR for the ability to swap lenses and do more creatively. Bought a 50mm f/1.8 II to go with my kit lens. Shortly after I ditched my kit lens, bought a 24-70L and use it as my walk around
2012 - Canon 5D3 w/ the 50 and 24-70L where I am today.

Still very much learning, but wanted gear that would outpace me for a long time to come and that would allow me to do whatever I wanted to.

Canon General / Re: Canon's MAP Pricing Goes Into Full Effect Today
« on: November 01, 2012, 09:46:12 AM »
I have purchased equipment from retailers below the MAP several times. I call them and ask for best prices, package deals, etc. The MAP price is for advertising, not for the ultimate selling price.

Yes. MAP will force you to put things in your virtual shopping cart before you get to see the price, if it's below the MAP price (or get a rebate). Canon cannot restrict the finale sale price of the good (resale price maintenance) , that would be illegal.

This should be added to CR's article on the front page in some form. It makes me breathe a sigh of relief to what I just read.

In the WTF are you thinking Canon, department... Really, the 5DMkII is higher priced than the new 6D? Hahah. And also as others said, why not take this opportunity to lower your prices a little bit to compete, since you know, you just reported a ton of lost revenue? Just a thought.
