EOS Bodies - For Stills / Refurbished 5D Mark ii or New Mark iii..???
« on: July 25, 2013, 12:54:16 PM »
Hi fellow photos,

So a few weeks ago I asked everyone whether to invest in a 2nd body or new lens (getting into wedding photography & assisting currently as 3rd/2nd shooter)...& everyone suggested 2nd body.  So now I'm in a dilemma w/which body to buy. I missed the opportunity in getting the mark iii for $2550 last week through BigValueInc.  So now, should I:

1) get a refurbished mark ii for $1400
2) wait for another deal sometime this yr to get the mark iii (hoping to get it under $3k)?

I will eventually upgrade to a mark iii but w/the extra $ saved (by getting the refurb.mark ii now) I can use it towards a new lens.

Currently shooting w/:
5D mark ii
Sigma 35mm 1.4
Canon 50mm 1.8 ii
Canon 24-105 (will sell & use $ to get 24-70 2.8 ii along w/$ 'saved' from refurbished mark ii over mark iii. If I don't sell this lens, I would probably get 85mm 1.2 as next lens)
Canon 70/-200 2.8 ii

Please provide some insight & ur thinking behind it.  Thx!!!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Mico Focus on the 5D Mark II...
« on: July 12, 2013, 12:03:15 PM »
Hi Everyone,

So, I purchased the Sigma 35mm 1.4 a little over a month ago and shot w/it a couple of times, including assisting at a wedding a couple of weeks ago.  I noticed there were some off focus/inconsistent focusing issues.  So I sent it in to Sigma out on Long Island to have a look.  I am told byt the service technician he doesn't find anything wrong w/the lens and asked me to provide some photos of my concerned issues.  I did.  After which, he said: "From these photos it looks like the camera is slightly back focusing the lens, the micro focus feature of the camera should correct this."

Has anyone ever had to mico focus their camera w/this lens?  Or any other lenses?  I believe the 5D Mark II settings can remember up to like 99 different lenses/mico focused settings right?  I have never had to Micro Focus on my camera so not sure how simple or different it is.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Questions on 5D Mark iii
« on: July 11, 2013, 12:22:04 AM »
Hi All,

I'm looking to save up to get the 5D Mark iii, but have a few questions.

1) how do I determine which camera is of which 'batch' of production since there has been various issues...e.g light leaks?

2) will the 'newest batch of production bodies' already have the most recent firmware updates (as of production)?

3) what other mechanical or firmware flaws should I pay attention to?

Software & Accessories / Questions on Canon Pixma Pro-100 Printer
« on: July 05, 2013, 05:12:07 PM »
Hi All,

Since this is a printer that's currently linked to a bundle deal, I'd like to know for those of you that use/or have used this model.  What's your input on this printer (I'm not using for album or professional prints)?  Also, have you ever used it as a 'regular printer' over photo's?  If so, does this damage or lessen the quality when I switch it back to using it for photo's?  Thanks and as always, your input/feed backs are much appreciated!!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / For all you wedding photogs out there...
« on: June 30, 2013, 05:21:08 PM »
Ok, here we go again for your sound advice.  I have started out as an assistant wedding photographer not too long ago, and my goal is to become a primary wedding Photog (disclaimer: this is still a side gig & I have a full time job, but goal is to be full time wedding photog).  Currently my gears are:

1) 5D Mark II
2) Sigma 35 mm f/1.4
3) Canon 50 mm f/1.8 II
4) Canon 24-105 mm f/4
5) Canon 70-200 mm f/2.8 II

I am saving up to purchase my next gear...should I aim to buy:

1) 5D Mark III
2) Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II (if I choose this option, I would sell my 24-105)

I know the price difference between these options could be a swing of $2k, but that's not the main issue.  Priority here is practicality and usefulness.

Initially I thought of purchasing lenses first, but the thought of a 2nd body is very intriguing because I have found swapping lenses is a bit of a hassle and could miss some important opportunities.

Thanks again!

Hi All,

I have recently purchased the Sigma 35 1/4 and really like the lens.  However I do notice some shots' focus is off (w/the 5D Mark II I use).  I called Sigma's Service center and they said I could send it in w/my camera to have it looked at.  I have never sent my lens/camera anywhere before and was wondering how many of you have done so and how safe it is to do so.

Any feed backs would be appreciated!  Thanks!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Insurance for your camera gears...
« on: June 10, 2013, 04:40:40 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'd like to know how many of you buy insurance for your camear gears?  If so,

1) From whom (company)?
2) How much you pay?
3) Have you ever filed a claim (was the process painful or smooth)?
4) How much you get back on a filed claim (%)?

I started assisting w/wedding shoots and have found through the hectics and hustles of the wedding day, gears could be easily dropped.  So I figured insuring them is a good item and worth the investment.

I live in he U.S (NYC) currently use:
1) 5D Mark II
2) 70-200 f/2.8 II
3) 24-105 f/4
4) 50 f/1.8 II
5) Sigma 35 f/1.4 DG

Thanks for your inputs!!!

Lenses / 50mm 1.2L vs 35mm 1.4L for events photography...
« on: April 23, 2013, 04:06:21 PM »
Hi All, it's been some time since I've posted on this forum and once again I need all your feedbacks, mates!
I'm debating between the 50mm 1.2L vs. the 35mm 1.4L.  They are priced pretty similar, so price is not an issue.
I will be using this mainly for weddings.

Currently I'm using 5D M2 w/ 70-280mm 2.8 v2; 24-70 f4L & 50mm 1.8.
I find the 50mm 1.8 not meeting my needs in low lighting.

So, bottom line, which lens would you go for and why?

Thanks again!!

Software & Accessories / Lens Filter For Landscape???
« on: January 16, 2013, 06:42:06 PM »
Hi Fellow Photogs,

I'm going on a trip to Malaysia and Thailand soon and would like your advice on getting a lens filter for landscape shots.  I'm looking for something that would make the clouds and sky "POP".

I currently use a 'B+W 77mm (XS-PRO/NANO-MC) UVa #010M FILTER' on both my 24-105L & 70-200 f/2.8 II lenses for general protection.

Please provide me your suggestion & if you can also post some pics taken w/your suggested filter would be great!

Thanks again!!

Software & Accessories / Compactflash Card: SanDisk vs. Lexar...
« on: December 28, 2012, 01:38:42 PM »
Hi All,

I've always owned Sandisk memory cards before, be it SD or Compactflash.  I currently use two 16GB Sandisk for my 5D Mark II.  I have had no issues with them.

So what prompts this question if Sandisk's been issues-free?  Well, per CR, Amazon's currently having a deal on Lexar compactflash on the 64GB/400x & 128GB/400x for $85 & $170 respectively.  My questions are 2-fold:

1) Has anyone had any issues with Lexar compactflashes?  If so, what are they?

2) Would you have any issues it them being only 400x vs. 800x or 1000x?

Thanks for you input!

Lighting / Help with lighting setups for portraits...
« on: December 06, 2012, 10:48:52 AM »
Hi All,

I have never purchased any lightings and wouldn't know where to begin.
I just received B&H's weekly newsletter that has deal on this kit:

I would like to know what light kit you would recommend for indoor/outdoor photo shoots.  Simple portraitures and things like that.  Your help is much appreciated!

I currently shoot w/the 5D Mark II with 50mm 1.8 II; 24-105 f/4; & 70-200 f/2.8 IS II.
Have a tripod and speedlite 430 EX II.

4) PowerShot G12

Please provide your input and why you would go with your selection.

Software & Accessories / Need Help: What type of DVD's do you recommend...
« on: September 25, 2012, 12:25:21 AM »
Hi All,

This sounds silly, but I've not burned any pictures on a DVD yet.  I've only save them on thumb drives and give them to friends I help take pictures for.  However, as I'm taking more photos for people, I have realized it's more practical to burn them into DVDs.  But since I've never done so, I'd like to ask everyone for suggestions on which DVDs to use?  Your help is much appreciated!

Do anyone uses a neck/shoulder strap other than the one that comes w/the ESO bodies?  I'm looking for a more comfortable one and would like to know for those of you that uses one other than the one provided by Canon upon purchase of a camera body.  I also have a slight concern on the safety/strenght of some that have easy release clips/buckles.  Are they secure?  I'm shooting w/a 5D M2 and main usage is for walking around the city and vacation and I could use one that's more comforting to the neck.  Thanks for your input!

Lenses / Which to get next: 35 f/1.4L or 16-35 f/2.8L...?
« on: September 12, 2012, 04:39:50 PM »
Hi everyone again.  Now that I've received responses on your feed back on picking the 16-35 over the 17-40 from my previous post, I am in need of your input again.  Here's my situation.

I shoot w/the 5D Mark II (griped) w/the 430EX
Other lenses I have now are: 1) 70-200 f/2.8 II     2) 24-105 f/4      3) 50 f/1.8 II

I assist with weddings/events, and shoot portraits.  I also shoot often on trips and vacations.

Which lens should I get next to better suit my needs:
1) 35 f/1.4 or
2) 16-25 f/2.8
3) some other lens you would recommend?

I can only get one for now.

Thanks again for your help!
