Software & Accessories / MK III screen protectors
« on: May 30, 2012, 08:47:44 AM »
This topic was discussed somewhat a couple of months ago but I wanted to ask more specifically if the conventional wisdom suggests a film protector (XO Skins type) or a hard protector (Vello glass type) is best.  Or nothing at all??  I recall Mt. Spokane said there is already a protective cover there the could be changed.  My bias is to apply some type cover anyway - either film or one of the thin glass ones.  I'll appreciate your comments.

Hmmmmmmm....stuff to think about.  I'm in Africa and the nearest well stocked camera store is about 1500 miles away - so it will be a while before I can look at, hold and manipulate the options.

However, the Arca Swiss type head appears to depend on torquing the set screw for adequate tightness whereby the Manfrotto plate is a "clip in" system that is either in our out.   The previous statement made me feel the AS system would be less "certain" of being properly latched down.

I appreciate your comments.  They help.

Software & Accessories / Travel tripod -- quick connector systems???
« on: April 12, 2012, 02:40:14 PM »
Based on a variety of learned opinions from this site, I'm setting aside the notion of buying a Benro Travel Angel and will buy a Gitzo Traveler 1542T.  I have, and use extensively a Manfrotto monopod with their monopod head & quick connector.  For the 1542 I plan to buy a Manfrotto 054 Magnesium head with the Q2 quick release  (QR)plate.   It's the same model 200pl plate used on my monopod.  My obvious goal is to uses the same QR system on the monpod and tripod.

I'm seeking comments on the merits of the Manfrotto QR 2 system - which is their their smaller plate.  They also make a larger QR system but i prefer to use the QR 2 if it appears sound.  Manfrotto's site does not give comparative values of the different QR systems.

I'll soon be bolting more expensive toys on top of these kits so I want to have a good feel that the QR system is not a weak link.  The tripod is rated at 17lbs and the  054 head ad 22lbs. In the near future I'll be using 5d MK3 with largest lens likely being a 70-300 L series.

Also to the above.  No long hikes, but this backpack is where the camera and lenses stay when not in use.  Paying anywhere between $1-300 would be a preference.

Yes - perhaps my question was too general.  The photo backpack I seek would be for my camera kit only.   It would not be used for laptops etc.   Photo toys only. I was not sure if perhaps there was accepted  brand that was considered best-in-class.

I'll be purchasing a new kit soon.  Mk II  (yea, I know but $2000 is enough for me) with some L series glass.  E.g. 24-105, 70-300 and quite a few accessories.  What is the conventioinal wisdom on the best backpack???  I would want something that has a very flexible layout.  Very good quality, very protective, etc.   We all know the Case Logic brand but what is the best in class for carrying and protecting our toys?

Lenses / Re: No 2X extender for 70-300mm L Series

I appreciate the help from all.   I'm a bit new to this process so let me clarify.  I understand the Canon TC will not work.  Several explained why.  Thanks.

However, it appears the Kenko 1.4 will work but struggles with auto focus in dim light. It will work fine on manual focus?   I would prefer to avoid taping any conductors (it's that anal engineer in me)  Thanks from lovely downtown Luanda, Angola.

Lenses / No 2X extender for 70-300mm L Series

I just found out that the Canon externders (models II or III) will work with most ranges of zooms but not the 70-300mm L series.  I assume this must be due to it's "trombone" design or some issue related to it's compace size.  Can someone elaborate????   Thanks.
