I vote for the 5D mkiii.  It covers all you requests perfectly, at a fraction of the cost of a 1dx.  Don't buy an old 1D, it will be used and abused by a pro, and plus way outdated the day you buy it...  Just my two cents as a weekend pro.  I've been using my 5d mkiii for similar subject matter as what you are shooting and have been extremely happy with it's performance...

Ill include a couple examples I've shot with my 5d mkiii over the last few months of the three categories that you want your camera to do (sports, landscape, portraiture/low light).  Also, as a side note, this camera is not confusing in the least bit.  I just switched from Pentax to Canon on this camera, and the learning curve was maybe an afternoon or so.

Sports:  This first one was shot with the 70-200 2.8 IS I, and the 2x mmiii (similar to your proposed setup)

50mm f1.2, ISO 2000, 1/320. 
This was ambient light in a dim room just after the sun went down.  I needed a fast shutter speed because the little guy was moving around pretty fast.

No really fast motion apparent, why would you use such an extreme shutter speed?  I think you could have easily gotten away with 1/250, 1/125 or even 1/60 and had a much crisper image.  Also the focus seems a bit off, but that just might be due to the noise reduction...

If you have ever seen Easy Rider you will recognize this crypt (Peter Fonda is sitting on the statue's lap crying as if it is his mother).  From the legendary Saint Louis Cemetery #1 in NOLA.  The clouds that day were pretty surreal.

Lots of good shots guys, although I think there are constantly three big things that a lot of you can work one. 1) Using HDR  to capture DR that is impossible with a single exposure, and not just as a detail enhancing effect. 2) reducing the muddy gray tones in the final image as well as getting back to a sharp image.  3) Overcooking the light adjustments such that there are no bright and no dark areas.  It always looks bad to me when the sky is darker than the subject/ground.

That being said, keep up the good work, here are a couple new ones for me...

How di you get the couple (last shot) to remain still for the long exp?

was it a composite?

What were you settings for the milky Way rendering?

Thanks.  The couple (actually my little brother and my mom;) just sat still for 30 seconds, not that long, and not super sharp is you blew it up really big (would have been better to do a composite, but we were kinda drunk and it was late). 

The milky way shot was 30 seconds, 14mm L II at f2.8, 6400ISO I believe.

Another new one from the other day.  I bracketed this image before the long exposure, but the DR was so good on the single long exposure that I didn't even need/want to use any of the brackets for the final image.  This is just a converted RAW, pretty much straight from camera...

Alex, these are AWESOME photos... for your 'first attempts' - absolutely stunning work.

The ultra wide perspective is very cool.   

Very quickly, I did some basic calculations, and realise your 'black glass' is WAY WAY WAYYYYY darker than even 3 x ND8 filters stacked.

I have 1 x ND8 (72mm) filter and a 1 x CPL (72mm) filter - which I sometimes stack.  The ND8 (and if necessary stacked with CPL) helps in some situations eg with waterfalls in broad daylight to get a long exposure... but can't give the effect like you get.

Inspiring work... I really like that the colours and tone of your photos are so 'strong' and yet natural. (I do use HDR on occasion, but very carefully - not to overcook it).

Thanks, I really appreciate it.  Ya the ND scale is non linear so you are correct, I am working with a MUCH darker ND than your stack.

Excellent. 90% of my stuf is long exposure between 2-7 minutes but at night.
I think LR must take care of any hot pixels as I never see them shooting RAW.

I tend to get great sharpness from long F8 exposures. Tripod shake should not end a factor IMO.

I have found F22 flaky in comparison.

what gel are you using?  brand?  price?  link? 

these have always been some of my favorite types of shots, but i ain't spending 80 bazillion dollars on a square piece of glass from Lee (don't care how good it is).

Kodak.  They are kinda hard to find as no one uses them anymore.

Hey guys, sorry I've been busy at work all day and the "notify me of replies" feature only seems to work sometimes (and in this case, not at all).  So, by black glass I was referring to a very dark ND filter, in this case its not technically glass, but rather a gel.  I'm using a 4.0 and I think that equates to 14 stops, and then I'm using f16-22 and iso 50-400, depending on the scene.  Like I said at 50iso and f22, I think I could push a 20min exp no problem (and maybe even 40min, as that would only be 1 stop brighter than 20min).  As for f22 degrading IQ, I wouldn't worry about it, your not going to get great IQ, no matter what you do, on a 5+ minute exposure (camera shake, movement, changing light, light refraction, wind ect), its more about the effect than the IQ.  As for hot pixels, you definitely get quite a few, and I suppose I could use a subtraction image, but I'm too impatient, so I just deal with them in post.  No HDR in these, as I obviously didn't need it, one thing I've found is that the DR in these super long exposures is incredible, I haven't figured out why from a physics stand point (to be honest I haven't even looked into it yet), but I'm sure there is a reason.  I have plans to shoot a few locations with long exposures like these that would have enough DR to necessitate HDR, which I'd be more than happy to post.  I'd love to see some of the stuff you guys have come up with using similar techniques...

Been playing around with some black glass (or film) recently.  Here are a few of my first attempts.  I can get up to 20 minute exposures in broad daylight if I push everything to its max (or should I say min), but these are all around 4-5 minutes each.  All shot with the 5D mkiii and the 14mm 2.8 L II.
