Landscape / Holiday Landscapes
« on: December 22, 2012, 11:32:09 PM »
I saw a post started for "Holiday" portraits.  Surely there has to be some outdoor holiday light pictures out there that have been taken.  I'll get it started with a picture from Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO.

Lenses / "Big White" lens choice
« on: December 20, 2012, 09:08:06 AM »
Sometime this summer I will be making a substantial purchase for a big white. I will be using it for field sports, football; soccer, and bird/wildlife photography. I am looking at 2 options:

500mm f/4L II

400mm f/2.8L II + Extender 1.4x III

What would you choose and why?

Street & City / Pictures in DC
« on: November 22, 2012, 05:57:44 PM »
Leaving for Washington, DC for two weeks, never been there before Most of my photo opportunities will be at night. I'll be taking a 5d III, 24-105, 135, and a 70-200 2.8 II. Plus tripod, remote release, no flash. Any suggestions for good spots to shoot on the National Mall or any other areas?  Thanks

5D MK III Sample Images / 5d Mk III - outdoor night time sports
« on: October 21, 2012, 04:00:56 AM »
Here are a couple shots taken last night at a local high school football game. My first attempt at a night game with my Mark III.  Both shots were taken using a 70-200 f/2.8 II lens.  Both were shot at 200mm @ f/2.8 and the shutter speed was 1/500 sec.  The ISO was set to auto and the leaping interception was at ISO 2000, the pass by the quarterback at ISO 4000.

Lenses / 85mm lens
« on: October 10, 2012, 06:12:22 PM »
I am looking at Canon's 85mm f/1.2L and the 85mm f/1.8.  I am amazed at the difference in price between these two lens as I read great reviews for both.  I am planning to buy one of the two, mainly to be used for indoor sports, i.e. basketball, volleyball, hockey, etc. mated to a 5d Mark III.  I currently use a 70-200 f/2.8L II for this, but I would like a tad more speed (so I can reduce the ISO and noise) and bokeh in my images.  Most shots are taken between about 90-140mm.  I can get closer to the court if need be.   I read an article a few months ago (can't find it now) in which the reviewer felt that the 1.2 version did not focus as quickly as the 1.8 which made it worse for indoor sports.  This was an eye opener to me and couldn't believe that a $400 lens would focus faster than a $2,000 lens. Does anyone out there have experience with one or both of these lens?  If so, can you give me some input on how you feel it would do for what I plan to use it for.  Thanks in advance.

5D MK III Sample Images / Concert pictures
« on: September 11, 2012, 05:19:04 PM »
Some evening concert pictures from this weekend in an outdoor amphitheater setting.  First time I have shot a concert with digital gear.  All with EOS 5D Mk III, 70-200 f/2.8 II at various focal lengths and apertures (most from 2.8-5.6), no flash, RAW capture.   A couple of these images are cropped, they required very little noise reduction in LR4.  Give me some feedback, thanks.

Technical Support / BG-E11 question
« on: September 09, 2012, 09:37:19 AM »
Considering the purchase of this grip for my 5d Mk III.  Will it work with only one battery in it?  The reason I ask is that I currently have 3 batteries, so 2 in the grip and when they go down one left. Will it work alone or do I have to buy a 4th?

Lenses / Choice for a landscape lens
« on: August 15, 2012, 10:25:12 PM »
I'm in the market for a landscape lens. The widest lens I have now is the short end of my 24-105.  I'm shooting with a 5d Mk III. What lens would you buy and why?  Cost is not an issue.  Thanks in advance for your input.

Lighting / Flash used at night time racing events
« on: August 14, 2012, 05:14:59 PM »
I recently attended the "Knoxville Nationals" which is the Superbowl of dirt Sprint Car auto racing.  I noted several photographers on the infield that were taking pictures of the cars as they came into and slid through the corners.  They appeared to be using DSLR's with a big bracket mounted flash of some type.  The flash had a large reflector on it, probably at least 12" in diameter.  Does anyone know what type of flash units that these guys are using?  There were probably at least a dozen photographers with them at different points around the track.  Thanks.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Lovin' my 5d Mark III
« on: July 19, 2012, 09:18:02 PM »
I have had my mark III for about two weeks now and have been shooting a lot of hummingbird and macro shots.  My previous camera was a 40d which I thought took excellent pictures.... that is until now!  While I still think it takes great pictures, the 5d is just amazing.  I was really worried about losing the crop factor for some pics, especially the birds.  However, the Mark III more than makes up for this with it's low light capability and the substantial bump in resolution.  I have been amazed at how much I can crop some of my full frame pics and they remain excellent. I am getting shots now that I never dreamed of with the 40d, and the 61 point autofocus, don't even get me started on how much I already love that!  Anyone with a crop body that has concerns about upgrading and losing the crop factor, don't worry about it if you upgrade to the Mark III.  I can't pick up my 40d anymore, it just can't compare. I was going to keep it so I would have two bodies, but I'm starting to think that it may go and I may buy another full frame, possibly a Mark II.  :) :) :) :) :) :)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5d Mk III focus calibration
« on: July 17, 2012, 08:21:04 PM »
Has anyone calibrated the focus yet on their 5d MK III?  If so, did you use any software to do it, or did you set up your own test?  Finally, did your lens require much calibration (was it worth the effort)?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D Mark III firmware update 1.1.3?
« on: July 05, 2012, 04:15:59 PM »
Just got my new 5D Mark III today and the first thing I wanted to do was update the firmware as I had read that version 1.1.2 was released.  When I went to the Canon site it showed the most current version as 1.1.3.  I had heard no mention of 1.1.3.  Does anyone know what all that update includes?  My camera already had 1.1.2 on it.  I updated to 1.1.3, it only took about 3-4 minutes.

EOS Bodies / How would you upgrade?
« on: June 22, 2012, 05:55:30 PM »
I am looking at two upgrade options, give me your thoughts on what you would do.  I currently have one body, a 40d, which has served me well.  Lenses: 28-135, 100 macro, 100-400L, 70-200L II.  I do a wide variety of outdoor photography, landscapes, wildlife, birds, flowers, and macro shots.  I do no "people" work of any sort.  I am ready to uprade and here are the options I am considering.

1. Get a 5d Mk III with the kit 24-105L and keep my 40d as well.

2. Get a 5d Mk II with the kit 24-105 and a 7d body, sell my 40d.

I can do either of these for about the same amount of money right now.

I forgot to mention that I would be selling the 28-135 in both of these scenarios.
