Lenses / Re: Opinion: EF 24-70 f/4L IS & EF 35 f/2 IS
« on: November 05, 2012, 10:26:04 AM »
When this puppy comes out it will be a hard choice between the 24-70f4 IS the 24-105, and the tamron 24-70 2.8 vc as they will all be around the same price. If you can get over the backwards zoom of the Tammy that's probably the lens of choice in this price range.

I'm guessing...the price tag 24-70 f4 IS is $1599?

I wouldnt be surprised by that pricing, but if this is the kit lens going forward I'd expect it closer to $1200 like the 24-105 and about $800 in the kit. So it won't make munch sense for anyone to pick up this lens in its own. The 24-105 is likely on its way out, which is too bad, it's maybe the most perfect travel/general use lens on the market.

Since I already have the 24-105, I'll wait and see how this new lens compares to it. If its noticeably sharper, has better IS, not crazily expensive and doesn't suffer from lens creep (my 24-105 does), then I may switch to it. I also have the 70-200 f4 IS, so I don't mind switching lens as needed.

I'm going to stick to my original plan when it comes to lens, which is to buy the cheaper F4 zooms and supplement with fast primes (1.4 and faster).

Smart man. F2.8 is not fast enough IMHO to stop most action in low light.

+1 for black rapid straps. Bought one a month ago and it has changed my life. I no longer wear the uncomfortable neck strap or carry around an annoying camera bag. Just camera, strap, plus my lens of choice for the day and maybe a 50mm stuffed in a jacket pocket.

As for your focus recompose issue, all that does is show you which focus point you used, not what was actually in focus at the time you took the shot. Get comfortable moving around the focus point in frame while in the act of shooting it will result in more keepers especially with a mark iii

If the 70-200 f4 hasn't lived up to your expectations I doubt anything will. Thats generally considered one of the sharpest zooms ever made. More than likely you just have a copy that needs a little calibration to your camera body.

Do you have a couple of speed lights?  If so your probably golden with the 24-105. If no flash the 17-55 will come in handy. If your comfortable with the flash then I'd give it a try with your current gear. If not you won't find anyone here who would turn down a 24-70ii and 70-200ii if it was in the cards.

F1.4 or f1.8 - yes
True ring ism - yes

Bad photos are just bad photos, but bad satire is just unacceptable. Here's to your side not winning on Tuesday, especially if this is the kind of creative thinking we can expect to help solve our collective problems.

For crop, id look for a used 17-55 2.8 $750 or so, plus used 85 1.8 $300. That's maybe a little over budget but IMHO a great set up. Then save up for either a 10-22 if you like the wide end or one of the 70-200's if your more into the tele end.

How much are you planning on shooting between f1.2-2?  If a lot then the answer is easy. If not much get the zoom.

Don't expect to see a deal on either. If you've got the scratch for either new or used I'd just pony up now. No reason to wait for any sort of decent price drop on those items. You may as well be out shooting with them.

But there's so much more than sharpness, what about the bokeh!

I think this gets played up too much as just a function of aperture, distance to subject, and subject distance to background are equally important. The rest is just pure personal taste on the quality of blur.

I don't think the 50L is worth the price unless you are always shooting at f1.2-2 otherwise either the 50 1.4 or to be quite honest the 50 1.8 are better and each of those are a fraction of the price of the 50L. As for the 35 I think it's a great fl for environmental portraits and some general street, but I think as someone else noted the 24-70ii is just as or maybe even sharper at the comparative apertures that unless you are shooting wide open I'd opt for the zoom even though its a step above the prime in terms of price and that gives you great sharpness not only at 35 and 50 but throughout the zoom range.
