Mother-in-law bought a SX150, which 3 months later now has what appears to be a logic chip malfunction. Upon booting up it does everything as expected and then zooms to the long end upon where the user can no longer control it. Live view is still working but that's it.

Canon USA told her she dropped the camera and it isn't covered. Problem is (1) it wasn't dropped or knocked around, (2) there is no physical evidence it has been dropped or knocked around - it's mint cosmetically, and (3) the symptoms of the camera are not consistent with Canon USA's claim that it was dropped.

In this case the husband and the son-in-law of the unfortunate SX150 owner are currently 5D3 owners with a smattering of low to mid-priced L glass (i.e. 24-105, 100L, 70-200 IS II, etc) and up to now had an appetite to add substantially to the respective L collections.

But this incident has left a very foul taste in our mouths. First Canon USA implicitly calls her a liar, then they don't honor their stated warranty, and now she's the proud owner of a mint-looking brick...

Got news for Canon, they can forget ever getting another dime out of me. As for mom in law, she already switched to Nikon. As for me, I'll switch too when it's time to move the 5D3 body. Already moving out non essential lenses in the collection. I simply will not do business with Canon USA or any other company that pulls this sort of BS.

Lighting / Bounce flash with YN-568 question
« on: March 03, 2013, 11:58:04 AM »
I just got in a YN-568 ETTL II flash. This is my first experience with an ETTL flash - used manual to this point.

I tried using it to bounce flash and it severely underexposes. My understanding of ETTL II is that exposure is set via a pre-flash and should account for bounce, or any other modifier, when setting power level.

Searching the net showed a number of people supporting my inderstanding of how it supposedly works, but also a number of people who express the same issue I have, even with 580EX II.

So not sure what to think at this point. Should ETTL II bounce flash properly expose or should I need to dial in +3 (or so, which makes the exposure close to right) on the flash first to make it work? If the latter, ETTL seems rather pointless to me except for direct flash, which seems to work, but has a pitiful asthetic.

Any thoughts?

Lenses / 70-200 IS2 + Canon 1.4x teleconverter question
« on: January 22, 2013, 09:19:15 PM »
I have the 70-200 IS2 and just ordered the Canon 1.4x teleconverter, should be here next week some time. I looked at the chart shots of this combo at http://www.the-digital-picture.com/ and liked what I saw. However, the shots are only at 200mm plus the converter. I read the info on the converter and it says its only compatible with 135mm and longer.

So my question is what to expect out of this pairing when zoomed under native 135mm? I am assuming it will not be very good on the short end. Is that what owners of this combo have found? Or is it still good IQ even on the short end with the converter?

Of course I'll find out for myself next week, but knowing what to expect will help me evaluate if its a good copy, so thanks in advance for sharing what you know.

Lighting / AF assist for outer focus points on 5D3?
« on: January 16, 2013, 10:21:01 PM »
Do flashes with AF assist only project a beam for center focus point use or do some models allow use of the outer points as well? If the latter, which models? Thanks in advance for any info shared!

I'd like to solicit thoughts and opinions about how to use a 100L at less than 1 foot distance [edit] or perhaps same working distance but greater magnification.

My guess is a diopter on front or extension tube on back or maybe both?

Please chime in if you have a solution and can comment about the pros and cons!

LOL, maybe the right answer is MP65 but not ready to go there just yet...

EOS Bodies / 5D3 vs 6D AF in low light
« on: December 14, 2012, 07:35:31 PM »
So I just sent a 6D back for issues other than AF and ISO and get in a 5D3 and after a couple of hours with it all I can say is the 5D3 center point is a joke compared to 6D in low light. 5D3 won't focus at all on fabrics in moderately low light that 6D locks in well under a second. 5D3 is noticably noiser at hi ISO as well.

Lenses / Ditch 100L for 70-200 L II ?
« on: December 13, 2012, 02:42:14 PM »
I find I use my 100L as short tele most of the time (once I got thru all the initial bug pictures) and I'm pretty happy with the results I'm getting. I like having the IS and 2.8 is for the most part fast enough for me.

I'm considering going to a 70-200 II instead and want to ask folks who've used both what their feelings are with respect to what each has to offer at 100mm.

I'd love to get a 200 f2 in addition to the 100 but I can't really justify tying up that kinda $$$. So the idea is do a 70-200 for portrait to moderate tele, and a couple of primes for normal and short.

Another thought is to go for a 135L instead. Less flexibility but more reach than 100 and faster.

Thoughts?

Third Party Manufacturers / Kudos Sigma warranty
« on: December 07, 2012, 01:15:59 AM »
I have a smooth finish 50mm Sigma f1.4 and it exhibited the focus pattern that Roger at Lens Rentals discusses, in that I could AFMA it to work from about 5-20 feet but either side of that would front/back focus.

I sent it to Sigma USA, they got it back to me in a week with a firmware update and this thing now is spot on at any distance. Good job Sigma! You probably just sold me one of your new 35 and maybe an 85 as a result.

CR recently ran a tip about Canon EOS 5D Mark III Body $2499. Go to the eBay link and the ad clearly states at the top for all to see "Canon USA Warranty" which is in fact a blatant lie.

I called Canon and asked them specifically about their warranty policy after reading their written legal warranty description. Despite the legal language not including a single mention of "authorized dealer", their stated policy is that they do not honor warranty on any item not purchased from an "authorized dealer", reasoning that non-authorized dealers are considered the "first purchaser", not the "reseller". According to Canon, that makes the buyer from BigValueInc the second buyer of a used camera. Yet the BigValueInc ad prominently lists it as "New" with "Canon USA Warranty".

BigValueInc is not on Canon's list of authoized dealers. In fact BigValueInc even states in their "about us" section that they are not an authorized dealer.

Yet there it is right at the top for all to see "Canon USA Warranty" and "New". Both of which are in fact a blatant lies.

It's also interesting that eBay is looking the other way on this matter.

I almost bit on one of these for $2886 after missing out on the $2499 deal...glad I looked into it closer...and felt this info was worth sharing.

Software & Accessories / Ugrade 50D and 5DII 1.5 stops ISO for $99?
« on: November 14, 2012, 05:31:36 PM »
Just bought my upgrade for Capture One Pro v7 ($99)  and the noise reduction tools are improved to the point where both my 50D and 5DII, to my eyes, are better at 1 to 1.5 stops higher ISO than with v6, which was IMO better than DPP by a small amount.

My initial experience was that the v7 NR was costing too much detail, but then discovered the "Advanced NR - Surface" has been replaced with "Advanced NR - Detail" which you slide to the right to 'increase detail' (which when comparing to v6 actually looks more like 'reduce smoothing effect'). I am consistently getting what looks to my eyes is 1 to 1.5 stops better ISO performance while retaining the same detail or even improving it slightly.

The revised HDR tools are producing breathtaking results for me, they are in a completely different league and the shadow recoveries pretty darn clean. The revised clarity tool is very nice and has two base profiles plus a new construct slider so you can dial in a bunch of different flavors of local contrast.

v7 now includes lens profiles for the more popular Canon and Canon mount Sigma lenses - it used to only include Phase One lenses. They've also added some additional management stuff. And of course the color management (which is what attracted me to them in the first place) is still stellar.

I know most around here are Adobe users (and I use them myself with Premier Pro for video), but I really recommend trying the CO demo (60 days unrestricted functionality) if you're using Canon's older, noisier bodies like the 50D, 60D 5D2, etc., or want/need truly great HDR tools.

IQ wise, this upgrade was literally like buying two new camera bodies for $99, well, except that it didn't upgade the AF... If I would have spent $5000 replacing my 50D and 5D2 and got this kind of ISO and DR improvements I would have been pretty happy, so I can only imagine what this soft does for a 5D3 or 1Dx.

EOS Bodies / OT: Yet another "lens cap on test" with a twist...
« on: April 05, 2012, 02:46:04 PM »
After all the posts around here about folks testing their 5D3 by taking pictures with the lens cap on and others debating the relative merits thereof, I could not pass up posting this link:

http://blog.phaseone.com/2012/04/01/photography-through-the-lens-cap/

Pretty amazing.

Pretty useless too, but still, pretty amazing.

I have been a big proponent of Capture One Pro 6 as it has allowed for very good results when processing and converting files from a 50D and 60D. However, the sharpening and color noise reduction are virtually useless when processing 5D2 files.

The sharpening introduces all sorts of bright blue pixels in the blacks when shot at ISO 3200. The color noise reduction doesn't do anything at all until a certain threshold where it then looks like an animation effect and then becomes something that looks like a massive Gaussian blur.

Oddly there are no such problems with 50D/60D files and no such problems with the same 5D2 files under ACR or DPP. Seems totally bizarre that CO would be so good with the 15MP and 18MP files and so horrible with a 21MP file...makes no sense. I even reinstalled the software to try to resolve it.

Sad, because the the CO product is fantastic in terms of it's toolset and workflow. But if sharpening and color NR don't work for 5D2 files it all becomes useless for me. Unfortunately their support informed me it is "user error" which is unacceptable.

So now to buy LR since the ACR noise reduction and sharpening is excellent on 5D2 files.
