EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 70D Coming in July? [CR2]
« on: May 21, 2013, 10:25:11 PM »
Some people in this thread are already coming to solid conclusions about the 70D, making remarks about it's use for soccer moms, etc. I understand making guesses based on Canon's track record for releases, but still. How are you so sure the 70D will be so much like the 60D? Wasn't the 60D a radical change from it's predecessor? My nephew plays soccer but I've actually never seen a soccer mom with a 60D, 9/10 it's a rebel and then I did see one with a Nikon D3000. The use of the term soccer mom is kinda overblown in this forum. I mean, what if we saw a soccer mom with a 1DX? I guess that makes the 1DX a soccer mom camera too. I personally would rather make fun of the old tourist folk and their odd setups like this one guy I met who had a 70-300 on his film body...for a vacation camera. Whatever makes people happy I guess. O.o

Well, the surprise might be, that the price tag is even higher than ever before ... my two cents  8)
Pedro, that wouldn't be a surprise. A surprise would be if it was lower! :)

Nice. And a pleasant surprise that would definitely be.  ;)

The trolls will never be happy though.  :o

Lenses / Re: I have a weight limit....what would you bring?
« on: May 17, 2013, 06:51:06 AM »
You could always bring just your 24-105mm, known to be the perfect travel L lens, and shoot everything to an average degree from wide to telephoto. =P Saves a lot of space, weight, and helps you enjoy the trip more like a previous response stated.

That's all fine, but perhaps do what I did and buy an inexpensive tripod when you get there, even if just for the weight of your 17-40 ;) Good for night shots and at times you might want to be in your own photo to prove you were there. You can easily leave the tripod with a relative or friend before going back. I bought a tripod for 20 bucks, left it at my cousin's and when I went back I used it again. *shrug*

Lenses / Re: EF 24-70mm F2.8 L ver 2 or 3 Prime Lens
« on: May 14, 2013, 10:30:32 PM »
Depends on what you already own, and what you want to shoot. I'd be as practical as possible when starting out your set of lenses. A 24-70 II is a very practical focal length for most common use and has prime-like quality and performance. However, for about the same price you could also get a 24-105mm and that same set of primes. I'd personally still get the 24-70 II to avoid lens changes and the great sharpness from 2.8 on down. I can't sell my primes just yet because I shoot a lot of indoor events with moving subjects, but I'm going to add the 24-70 II very soon.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D Mark III with Continuous RAW Video Recording

Funny how in previous threads everyone wanted RAW video on Canon DSLRs, and now that it can be done everyone in this thread is so MEH about it, hahaha.

Great news ! ... my 5DIII has an even longer, and more productive future!

aside ... why doesn't Canon hire these guys (ML), and blow every other brand out of the water?

Because Canon only really competes with itself at the moment =P

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 40D vs. 6D AF
« on: May 11, 2013, 11:44:22 PM »
I think they're both equal for AF but in different regards. Like, 40D has better AI servo capability for action shots IMO, I didn't complain about it much back when I used one extensively. But with a 6D I can shoot a decent portrait indoors with the center point, something that was more challenging with the 40D.

Great photos, I like how you say "It's pretty cool when you feel like 6400 ISO is low".

Of course gear doesn't matter, in the future my butt will be able to take photos just like any camera. ^^ Heck... the government might already be doing it... O.o

I'm even more surprised he's not using a macro lens for some of the products like the iPhone and smaller like the iPod shuffle.

Lenses / Re: Poll: Most Wanted New Lenses of 2013.
« on: May 06, 2013, 07:41:18 PM »
Most of these lenses already exist, a 14-24mm 2.8 would fill a hole in the Canon lineup for those who want an UWA similar to Nikon's stellar 14-24. If it ever comes out and is as sharp as the current 24-70 II then I think we'd have a winner. (Yeah, that means I voted for the 14-24) If I could pick a second choice, any new 50mm would be nice since it's one of the weakest and most outdated (except for the 50L) areas in the lineup.

Lenses / Re: Canon 24 - 105 for event photography?
« on: May 06, 2013, 06:02:19 AM »
I also have a 5DIII.  The 24-105 is a very, very good lens.  It is good at everything but it is the best at nothing.  You can find a prime that will do any task better.  Today I hauled around a bag of lenes and left this home.  I ended up with some good shots, but kept changing lenses.95% of what I took was between 24 and 105.  So I ended up cutting a photowalk short because I was tired and on top of that I got some dust on the focusing screen because I was constantly changing lenses in the wind.  I should have just taken the 24-105L.  Larger point.  If you are going for a walk about, this is your lens.  If you are going to a specific event, with a specific task, you can probably find something better.  Public speaking?  I'd go with the super sharp 135 f2L, but you will give up the IS.  Keep your 24-105L.  Leave it on your camera unless you have a specific task.

+1 But if I might add, the 24-105mm is the best single body solution there is for events. I use up to 3 bodies at some events by myself so I'm okay with my primes. But for one body, zoom range is very important. Why? Stuff happens spur of the moment at most events. If it's a birthday party or wedding of some sort... moments just happen, people who come to you wanting a group shot just happen, no one can run faster than zooming with a 24-105mm to catch the moment, and even if you somehow run faster than the fastest man in the world, it's just rude at an event. ;) So I definitely recommend the 24-105mm with an adjustable flash for pretty much any event. Especially if you're getting paid. They'll accept 100 mediocre photos of whatever needed to be taken over 5 top quality ones from a limited range, that's just how the business works. No one in the thousands of events I've taken have said wow those 5 photos are really really nice, I don't care that you missed the other 95 shots that we needed. For events, invest in utility first, and upgrade to higher quality gear from then on.

Lenses / Re: Best Lens for FF 6D
« on: May 05, 2013, 11:48:33 PM »
Start with a 50mm F1.4 (Sigma/Canon or a 40mm pancake though I like the F1.4 more than F2.8).  You can acquire later whatever you think you need.  You can also sell it if you find out later that you don't need it.  A 24-105 F4 L is also a good start.  You can sell it later if you don't need it also without losing much (maybe gain a little bit more if you purchase it as a kit lens).

The OP has already stated they have a 50mm 1.8 and 40mm pancake... I'm sure expect is supposed to be except as it would make more sense anyway, hehe.
