Right from the start?  I doubt gear would have made a lot of difference, there's a learning curve.. By the time I finally laid down my AE1 I think gear began to make a significant difference but not all the difference, back and forth between new pieces of gear F1, AE1, Old Olympus, 1st P&S, etc.. there continued to be a learning curve but you could get a feel that you could maximize your skills and the gear didn't get the best of you...

Today's gear is better than the skills of many of us, so we keep pursuing, keep learning, keep pushing ourselves and our gear seems to still be waiting for us to catch up!  It's truly come a long way in the last 25-30 years!   :o

Lenses / Re: I'm terrified of my EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS II
« on: September 30, 2014, 01:45:13 PM »
I'm tempted by all of the strap suggestions, but just to come back to the original question for a moment...

I have the (possibly bad) habit of carrying my camera by simply wrapping my fingers around the handgrip.  It puts a twisting force on the lens mount.  That said, I have used the 70-200 F2.8 IS more than any other lens as I have moved from a 350D to a 40D to a 5D III.  There has never been a problem with the lens or camera mount.

The camera isn't always carried that way of course - I'll often wear the neck strap, but it's heavy enough that I end up using one hand to hold the weight of the lens as I walk.
As almost everyone has suggested, lose the neck strap, get a BR or a Carry Speed Strap, I've got both, in fact 2 of the Carry Speed's both brands work excellent, never failed me yet and the Carry Speed is a little cheaper, and they work every bit as good as my BR.  At least mine do..  That's why I have 2 of them and only 1 BR...

On my Carry Speeds, I hook up the safety strap to the camera via the quick connect directly to where you tie your neck strap too and the main strap goes straight to my lens mount...  love it!

You're neck will thank you and your insurance carrier will too, assuming you have insurance on your gear...  The first time you strap it on, you'll wonder why you waited so long!  Seriously, get it on Amazon or something, so you can send it back if you don't like it.  But you will... no question.  That's why everyone is recommending it..  :D

Software & Accessories / Re: Messenger Bag for my 5D3+24-70+70-200
« on: September 30, 2014, 02:13:19 AM »

I have been in the web to find a messenger type camera bag for travelling. I want the bag to be the slimmest possible, considering I will be carrying a 5D3 it will be difficult, with capacity for my 5D3+24-70+70-200 f2.8, well padded and that shouldn't look like 'this is a camera bag'.
I have in mind the Tamrac Rally 6, Tamrac Adventure Messenger 4 and Manfrotto Unica III Messenger so, experience with these, as well as other suggestions will be very welcomed. I would prefer a price under $100 if possible.
Thanks in advance
I don't have any experience with those bags but I wouldn't worry about being under $100 if you're looking for something that's going to be carrying close to $7,000 of gear in it...  ;)

Just saw the $50 price drop this afternoon on Amazon... thought I'd share the savings...

Maybe Amazon is starting their Xmas pricing early. :)
Good Deal!  I wish they hadn't opened up the Tampa warehouse, now I have to go to Ebay or pay tax on Amazon..  :(

Some one locally is selling a 100-400 for $1000... I'm not sure if it is in anticipation of the new one coming out... but it is tempting... even just buying one, using it for a while and then selling it.  Tempting.
If it's anything close to as sharp as mine is, it's a steal!

Lighting / Re: New model Phottix Odin announced
« on: September 24, 2014, 10:16:15 AM »
I love Phottix products, exceptional quality and flawless performance!  I started out with their Strato System several years ago, never had a fail, quickly jumped to the Odin when they came out with it, simply excellent and I have little doubt that I'll jump to the new Odin II system soon enough.. Nothing wrong with my original Odin system at all, I've never had a misfire, ever.  I have the main unit and 5 triggers, love it!

I like the bright green buttons on the new system.  I at first I thought it was a little cheesy looking but I think it'll actually be very helpful now, especially at dusk or darker venues to see the buttons a bit easier...

I've never had an issue recommending their products to anyone.  They work perfect with all my Canon gear and are always at such a great price point..  ;D
