Of the lenses I currently own:

24-105 f/4L IS
100 f/2.8L Macro
50 f/1.4

If I could only have any 3 lenses and could get anything I wanted:

24-70 f/2.8L II
135 f/2L
200-400 f/4L 1.4x IS

Although it's a close call between the 135 and 100 macro....

If you set your intervals to 1/2 stop instead of 1/3 stop then you'll get 1/180.  Not sure if it's worth the hassle though for an extra 1/20. 

Curious though, have you tried firing at 1/200?  I just realized that I haven't pushed it to see how far I can get away with.  My 400D never bought me much, but I've heard of people having luck pushing past the max sync on other models.

Thanks for the tip! That works, and yeah a bit of a hassle for not much gain, but worth doing when working with strobes outside where every little bit helps.

I have tried shooting at 1/200, and I get a small black band at the bottom of the frame.  So sadly it doesn't seem possible.

Same!  Although it does explain why my camera kept having strange issues with the time.  I think I must have reset the time like 5 times before it actually stuck, before that all my pictures were "taken" 4 hours before they were actually taken.  Sadly it didn't work like a time travel device, although it was aspiring to be one.

Hoping they still bring out f/8 focusing, given how well that center point works in the dark, I don't see why it can't handle an f/8 lens (although I don't know enough about AF systems to know that for a fact).

The biggest annoyance I have is there doesn't seem to be a way to set the shutter speed to 1/180, unless a speedlite is attached, meaning my studio work done with dumb triggers has to be done at 1/160 even though 1/180 is possible.   However I don't think that's something Canon will care about fixing, since they have a solution - buy 4 Canon 600EX-RTs....

Hope they're of use for people just exploring what you can do with them - the current price is an absolute bargain, even if I am still wary of Google's motives ;-)

I'm also wary of what Google plans to do with the software.  I got the full version (having owned one of the plug-ins), and it seems to have very few, if any, DRMs attached to the binary.  Which suggests they either want to work on the honour system, something I totally agree with, or they don't care much about making money off the software - which is the worrying side of it.  Hopefully they do keep up development of the product, some of the filters are really nice.

What are the range requirements?  Canon doesn't have much in the EF-s super zoom department.  If you want something that's fairly wide on the wide end, like 18mm, you really don't have a lot of options.  The 18-135mm, and the 18-200mm are the only things I'd classify as a super zoom.   The 17-55mm is IMO the best standard zoom for APS-C, and the EF-S 17-85mm is a nice lens as well, but not really super zoom range.

Having just sold a 60D, I'm not about to buy the 70D, still it would be nice to see some new sensor tech - if only because it means it'll find its way into higher end models.  My money would be on the 7D2 getting the new sensor though - if the new sensor is really a lot better, than it makes sense to put it in an expensive body to get some of the R&D money back.  The 70D will have to go head-to-head with the D7100, but the 7D2 as rumoured will have no real completion, so Canon can charge a lot more...

Here's hoping for an increase in dynamic range, and in signal-to-noise ratios.

+ 1  I've stopped caring about MP a lot time ago.  However improved low ISO DR and SNR would be welcome!   Looks like the 7D2 may really get the new sensor tech - and Canon users can stop complaining about having old sensor tech.  (but we'll see, we've all said that before...)

Sounds reasonable.  Canon really seems to want to get the most out of that old sensor fab.  I remember people complaining about it when the 60D came out...  I wouldn't be surprised if they just keep with it until their market share starts dropping, and even then...  The 7D2 may just try to compete on fps and AF.  That's the problem with insisting on using your own fab (and not renting it to others), there is a huge cost associated with building a new one and decommissioning the old one.  Nikon has given itself a lot of flexibility by using other company's fabs, and Sony has been able to finance their fab by renting it out to Nikon and others.  Even major chip companies share fabs, see nVidia and AMD.

What do you shoot?  If it moves fast, get the 5DIII.  If it moves slow or not at all, get the 6D.

+1 that more or less says it all.  If you can get away with a 6D, it leaves some room for nice lenses.  If you are shooting sports, birds, ect. The AF of the 5D3 will be more useful.

This will be an outstanding camera that will silence all the critics. The camera is so good that Canon has skipped over the 70D, the 80D, the 90D, and gone straight to the 100D. I am sure it will take high megapixel pictures in complete darkness with no noise, shoot 8K video, and even make coffee in the morning.... Of course it will be "a little expensive", but probably no more than  a 600 f4....

That made me laugh!

A 100D would fit between the 70D and 650D (or the to-be 700D).

Would Canon really do that?

It doesn't make much sense with the numbering system they have going.  Unless this is their new range of "Small" DSLRs, in which case they don't really have much of a place to put it... Can't put it below the xxxxD range into something like a 10000D, that wouldn't sound good. And can't put it into the xxD or xD range since it's not likely to be that high on features.  So that does kind of leave sticking it above the current xxxxD range, like a 2000D (but that's really Y2K era marketing and kind of dated), or below the current xxxD range, like a 100D.   And given the number of cameras with a "100" in their name: Sony RX-100, Fuji x100, ect. they may be trying to cash in on that.

I don't think there is likely to be any difference in the production quality of same model lenses with respect to when they were made.    Having said that, older lenses will of course be well: older.  Things like rubber wears out, tight joints become lose with use, etc.   I have an a used 24-105mm, which works great, but shows its age.  Faded rubber, has a fair bit of lens creep, ect.   Having said that, if it's structurally sound, good lenses can last a long time.

A picture turning green can't possibly have anything to do with a memory card error, unless the card error somehow has an intelligence of its own and knows how to change the picture's color rather than randomly corrupting some bits.

Actually it could.  It depends on how the RAW files are compressed.  If some important bits get corrupted, it's possible an entire color channel could be lost, or for every value in a color channel to be effected when the data is uncompressed.  I don't know the details of CR2, but for JPEG this is very possible since it uses discrete cosine transforms (which are similar in nature to discrete Fourier transforms) to store data in the frequency domain with separate luminescence and chrominance channels, and even uses Huffman encoding tables to save space!  To display the data you have to do everything in reverse, including of course inverse discrete cosine transforms.

If the data was stored as a boring flat array of radiance values for each color, then yes, random errors wouldn't do this, however I suspect that's not the case with most image storage systems, including ones with lossless compression.

Well it may have nothing to do with the Camera, and just be a random memory card error, in which case you should spend lots of money on error correcting memory cards if that's not acceptable to you.   If it's the camera's "fault", it could be a flipped bit in the buffer, which is just fairly standard RAM (which corrupts data from time to time).  If you wanted to spend a ton of money, I'm sure they could build cameras with error correcting RAM, it exists for servers but costs far more than normal RAM.

So yes we could likely make these things 1 in 1,000,000,000 events, but it would cost more than reasonable person is going to pay.

Of course they could also save parity information with the file to try and correct bit corruptions, but then our files would be a lot larger, and people would complain about that ;)

Depends on the day...

Normally it's the 40mm pancake, just because it so wonderfully small, and I like the focal length for random snapshots.

My next most used is the 100mm L macro.  I use it any time I think I'll be shooting people.  I'd love to have the 135mm or an 85mm for that, but the macro is still very good - and I can shoot macro when I feel like it.

After that is the 24-105mm, that normally comes with me if I think I'll shoot landscape, or just have really no idea what I'll be shooting, but I want to do something serious.
