Lenses / Re: 24-70II or 17-40+5DMARK II
« on: October 30, 2012, 12:15:17 PM »
I know it's not what ur asking, but get the 24-70 mark 1 used, a 17-40, and a sigma 30mm 1.4. Lenses are the best way to improve you photography. The 24-70 is a great portrait lens and doesn't change that much in the update. The 17-40 is great for landscape, and pick up after your 11-16, which is a great lens by the way. The 30mm is a makeshift 50mm.

And I the future, when you have a greater budget for a better camera, buy a ff (5d iii, 6d, 1ds iii, 1dx, etc.), sell the 11-16 for some teleconverters, sell the 30 for a 50mm 1.4 ii if it's out, and then your set.

Also, having the best lens doesn't make you the best photographer, so don't worry about a 24-70 ii.

Wait, canon is pulling the wool over everyone's eyes. When they start producing the large megapixel ff dslr, pros will start selling 5d mark iiis cheap. Then the price will go down encouraging those who buy the 6d to move up to the 5d ii, and rebel users to get the 6d, and there will be a major price drop on the rebels, X0d's, 6d's, 7d's, and 5d mark iii. Worst case scenario, you wait and the price doesn't drop and you find a used one.
Sure, and when they start producing the Gigapixel SLR the 5DMkIII will be sold for 10$  ;D  ;D  ;D
Seriously now, this is just an exaggeration to point out that we can always wait for something better and miss while we wait...

What I'm trying to say, is the landscap pros and other people will want the camera and forget about the 5d mark iii, It will be pushed into another niche, soros will start selling them used, and the price will go down, I bet around $2,900. If getting a 5d iii is necessary now, get it, but if it isn't, why not just wait. If I had the money, I'd buy a 5d iii right now, but I'd rather get some lenses, because my camera works, and that's all that maters to me.

EOS Bodies / Re: G1 X or EOS M?
« on: October 24, 2012, 09:17:02 PM »
What I love, is my fujifilm x10, it is a really great camera, the manual zoom is nice and smooth, I'd prefer it over either option.

But of the two, I believe the g1x is more versitie, and it has a viewfinder, I'd prefer it for travel.
Or if you bring your big dslr on vacation, and all you want is a little creative camera, the eos m seems like a really awesome camera, and it will have better iso.

Lenses / Re: Next lens to purchase.

Either the canon 100-400, because your 24-105 is ok for portraits, bokeh is decent.
Or, the 28-300 l, it is a really gOod lens, or so I hear, your covered for air shows, and air shooting, the 300 also helps.
But you may also want that extra reach. The 3.5 aperture good at the wide end will best your 24-105 though. But, if portraits are that important, pick up a 50mm 1.8/1.4 and/or sell the 24-105 for a 400mm 5.6 is. I know the 24-105 is good for walking around, but either way, you may need to compromise.

Other option, canon 70-200 2.8 is ii.  get some extenders and a tamron 28-75 in place of the canon 24-105, the 28-75 is a remarkable lens, I borrowed it from a friend, and it is on par withe the canon 24-70 1 in terms of bokeh, but lacks a bit of sharpness.

I'd prefer option 2, for the versatility.

I'm confused, what lens is supposed to fill the 17-40's place, I bet canon would add is, but I don't think they'd bump it up to 50-60mm?

Software & Accessories / L-bracket grip
« on: October 20, 2012, 09:19:57 PM »
Hey guy, I'm looking to upgrade my dslr in the future. I'm going to get a l-bracket for landscape, wildlife and portraits when I use my tripod. Regardless of the brand, material, model, etc., will the bottom part of the bracket interfere with the grip on my battery grip. If I doesn't, I may just remove the bracket for stuff other than studio, wildlife, landscape, and other monopod/tripod use. Please don't give me the option of not using, a grip, because it is just more comfortable for me.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D III, or 6D+7D combo - your thoughts?
« on: October 18, 2012, 12:02:37 PM »
Get the 6d, for sports you always need a second body for photos, and the 6d won't hinder your abilities. If you stick the 70-200 on your 7d, and  the 85 on your 6d, you will be set. 4.5 is decent for ff, since I know a lot of other pros who shot sports with a 5d ii. But the 8fps is needed for some situations, and the 5d iii isn't designated for sports, it's a studio camera, with some fps versatility.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: I need some help my Canon friends!

You've got some good gear. The 5d ii is a bit outdated, so you should get a 5d iii or 1ds iii. It also seems that you are dreaming of film, film is good, but is not something that will make you better. Go for a new body, and keep using digital. They make these things the best for a reason. The guy you probably met, has refused to move over. Your film slr is good, but not for buissiness, unless it's what you've trained on and you have the money. You could start doing film once you've purchased every prime, and short zoom. Good glass really makes you better. So get a new dslr, or get some more glass.

Lenses / Re: Why is there no 700mm?
« on: October 16, 2012, 08:54:36 PM »
700/1.4= 500
Canon 500mm f4 x 1.4= 700mm 5.6

This is one of the reasons canon puts a lot of mechanics in their TCs, because they want to give people different telephoto capabilities, without having to waste a lot of time, effort, and money on new prototypes.

Lenses / Re: Which Prime: 50L or 35L?
« on: October 16, 2012, 08:50:44 PM »
I always break it down to how you shoot. If you shoot a lot of natural oriented/horizontal shots go 35. If you shoot vertical/portrait oriented shots go 50.

I have lots of razor sharp shots with my 50L. It takes some AFMA tweaking though. It is well documented that the focal plane of this lens is curved. Therefore I suggest adjusting using the focal point you use most. If you dial in the center point your shots focused with outer points are going to be off miserably. With my copy I found my center point to be a 14 step difference than the next-to-outer-most points. It went from -7 at center to +7 on the outer.

This guy has the right idea.

A 35-70 2 IS L is crazy, the new 24-70 ii is 2400 dollars, this going to be wortha hell of a lot. And the only is lens with f2 is the 200mm f2. Building this lens would exterminate the 24-70 ii.

I did however hear a couple rumors from my local camera store who coordinates with canon, and actually shared with me the official 6d specs before it was announced. They say there is a new 2.8 ef-s is zoom that will update the 17-55. It will have different focal length, and a better is motor. Also, ther is a rumored 24-105 replacement. It will have a similar hybrid is system like the 100mm macro, a 3.5/4 aperture, and a 20/24/35-105/110/120. All options are being considered. Canon is actually working on a lot of these rumors, especially the 14-24 to go with the 3d x, and everything else is going to be launched with the new Aps-c line, a new sensor with hybrid af will be in the (T5i, 70d, and the 7d ii, and there is a rumored special 1.7-1.8x sensor supposed to be in the "pro wildlife" dslr. This is like the Arab spring of canon dslrs. New ef-s STM lenses are to accompany them, and some new ef primes are rumored to. I did not hear anything about when we will see some new l zooms. (with the 14-24 excepted)

Lenses / Re: Next Lens

I'd go for the 24-70 ii, it is a perfect 1 lens setup for weddings and portraits.

Regarding the 50mm vs the 85mm, a 50 would go really well with FF, and the 1.2 is great. It is a necessary step up from the 1.2. The 85 is great for bokeh, but is a specialty lens. The 1.8 85 is swell, and gives you an ok depth of field, as well as fast focusing. My friend has the 85 1.2, and I have the 100mm l as well, so we did a comparison. The dofis amazing on the 85, but the 100's telephoto capabilities reall blew out the background and gave great image compression. The 50 is a better lens for weddings, especially since that is where you'd need it most (since you have the 1.8 now) and the 85 1.8 is stellar, carrying around the 1.2 at a wedding will really be a hindrance, because you'll see a perfect moment, and then have to switch to another lens.

Get the 50, once you get more into static portraiture, get the 85.

Animal Kingdom / Re: A day at Disney's Animal Kingdom - Orlando
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:48:23 PM »
I love disney, we live right in Florida, so we go over for a day or 2 just about every other month. I find it to be a really good street shooting places, and that is where I always test drive my new gear . I never carry lots of stuff, because then you just miss the Disney atmosphere. I never bring a gimp, but I dod bring my 75-300, sometimes just to go light.

If photography is all all about the photo and the mood, why not
Use a prime, it turns into a run and gun style for me, and I get some stunning photographs.

Lenses / Re: Canon fd lenses

I'm just probably put in the cash for the canon, but more importantly, I need to find some lenses that may be worth paying for. I thing I've already decided on the fd 85mm 1.2
