EOS-M / Re: Is the canon eos-m a dead end system?
« on: February 17, 2014, 02:43:10 PM »
It is very much dead, at least until Canon brings it to the same level as other mirrorless systems from Sony, Fuji, e.t.c

Canon is of course terrified of making a serious mirrorless camera like the A7R. They don't want to hurt the sales of their DSLR's.

Another vote for the A7R. Get the metabones adapter and you are all set!

The A7R is the best thing that happened to Canon users since the 5D2. :P

It is not just the high resolution, but also the rich deep RAW files it produces. Loads of dynamic range to work with! And no shadow banding.

EOS Bodies / Re: What's Next from Canon?

...sensor quality plays a very BIG role too. Canon has not been doing well in this last department for the past few years. Sigh...

I just don't understand comments like that. While Canon may be a bit slow on updating its APS-C sensors, I don't know how anyone can really criticize the 1D, 5D or 6D sensors. Canon customers ripped Canon for emphasizing megapixels over ISO performance, so Canon got conservative on the megapixels and produced sensors that outshine the competition in ISO performance.
Slightly, and only on higher ISO levels.

When it comes to base ISO (where most people shoot most of their photos), SoNikon completely destroys Canon's ancient sensors in terms of pure IQ and dynamic range. Canon hasn't even gotten rid of the dreadful shadow banding yet. Wtf? :P

Canon is only interesting for lenses now days. My EF-glass lives a happy life on my A7R. A tiny mirrorless camera that blows the 5D and 1DX out of the water. The difference in IQ is so big that I'll most likely never use my 5D3 again.

With the risk of sounding negative... BORING! (Ok, the G1X sounds a bit interesting) ;D ;D

I really really look forward to the day Canon announces their FF mirrorless camera. They have the technology to blow everybody away with their AF technology, which is an area mirrorless lag behind the dslr┬┤s.

I too would love to see a kickass FF mirrorless camera from Canon. But they won't be blowing anything away with their current sensor tech.

Just look at the A7R from Sony. It trumps everything Canon has in terms of pure IQ.

When the day comes when Canon manages to bring out a brand new sensor (higher resolution, higher DR and no shadow-banding), I doubt they'll put it inside a mirrorless body. At least not until it's been sold in a $7000 1D-body for 2 - 3 years.

Canon is Canon.

Lenses / Re: Lens Announcement Coming in February? [CR1]
« on: February 07, 2014, 04:59:17 AM »
I hope to see multiple lens releases in their first announcement. Otherwise, the so-called Year of the Lens for Canon is starting with a whimper.
Year of the lens - brought to you by Sigma.
Year of the sensor - brought to you by Sony.
Year of the mirrorless - brought to you by Fuji, Sony and Olympus.

Year of the printers and special edition powershots - brought to you by "you know who".

I fully agree. I waited and waited and waited, but Canon did not deliver.

I bought the A7R a couple of weeks ago and I could not be happier. The resolution, dynamic range and overall IQ of this camera is stunning, and miles ahead of my 5D3 and the 1DX!

AF performance isn't exactly top notch, but it is more than good enough for me. My models are not jumping around, and the landscapes are standing still. ;)

Who knows how long it will take Canon to release a high resolution body at a decent price? :P They also need to up their dynamic range and fix the horrible shadow banding.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Review: Sony A7R With Canon Glass

Obviously, I don't have all of Sony's financials in front of me, but it's interesting (to me, anyway) to contemplate the possibility of Sony selling off its sensor/imaging division, where Canon could be a potential buyer...
Sony's sensor division is not going anywhere. In fact, it is expanding.

Why do I get the feeling that this is another feminist anti-photoshop/anti-plasticsurgery/anti-boobjob/anti-beautification-anti-everything-that-isn't-youghurt-natural-video?  ::)

Nikon and their legendary 14-24mm f/2.8G ED..

The only wide-angle zooms that Canon makes that come close are 16-35mm f2.8L II
The 16-35 is not close at all. The focal range yes, but not the performance, esp in the corners!

Canon General / Re: Review: Canon EOS 17-40 f/4L by DxO Mark

I LOVE the range of this lens, but I hate the performance.

Give me a version II with tack sharp corners.

I'd much rather have a razor sharp 17-40 II than a razor sharp 14-24L.

I can feel the "heat" from this topic already ;)

My 2cents: There are two diff. markets, Pro and everyday shooter. The Pro will cont. with DSLR and wonderful L lenses. Where everyday shooters want something simple and compact, but doesn't want to give up FF IQ - this option doesn't exist until Sony shows up.

For me, I rather enjoy both worlds.
Would be true, if it wasn't for the fact that the A7R trumps the 5D3 and 1DX in FF IQ, while still being small, simple, wifi/smartphone-connectable, e.t.c.. It is without a doubt the best camera available for my dear L-lenses.. Like Kai said, the game is changing.

EDIT: Oops, I just saw that you mentioned Sony. Never mind. :)

This is only interesting if you like high dynamic range   :P
Which all photographers do.

Except those in denial, and those who shoot jpegs and don't like post processing very much. ;D

This is only interesting if you shoot at higher ISO settings.  :-\
