Here is a unique image that only has the color balance tweaked to enhance the winter mood.  I used the existing light in a parking lot that was highlight the falling and swirling snow.  I then lowered my shutter speed to drag a little (1/10th of a second) to allow movement in the falling snow.  It gives the finished product a very painterly, textured feeling.  I used the Canon 35mm f/2 IS lens (review coming soon!), handheld.

Great effect. The combination of the 6D's high ISO performance and fast IS lenses open up a whole new area of photography ! I'm looking forward to the 50 f2/1.8 IS

Me, too.  I'm not using any modern AF 50mm lens right now, but after using the 35mm f/2 IS I am actually (anxiously) awaiting a new 50mm in a similar vein.  The massive new Sigma 50 will only interest me if it is truly incredible.  There is still something to be said for reasonably sized lenses!!

Thanks.  It turned out more nicely than just out in the snow as the light gives the snow really defined edges.

Boy, I haven't posted here for a long time but I haven't stopped shooting 6D.  Today I was outside fooling around out of bordom with some dripping water since temperatures went above freezing.  I'm curious if anyone has any comments on how I can accomplish the goal of using a water droplet as a lens to create a scene that is both a landscape and abstract.

Here are a couple of the shots, either using 70-200 F2.8 II or the 300 F2.8 II with an extension tube for closer focus (inverted to right the image).  Getting sharp focus was really challenging, especially due to the wind but the wind was giving some interesting effects.

So, any ideas anyone on how to improve on what has be captured so far, or alternate ideas?

Hi Jack, good idea, I think maybe wrong Lenses.

I haven't tried this, but I have done a lot of underwater Macro, similar, sort of.

Your best shot might be a 100f/2.8 L IS, set to f16/f22, manual focus to where the drops are occurring, use a Flash to freeze motion.

There are People that do this sort of thing exceptionally well, and some have Posted on CR, so don't take my view as Gospel, just my thoughts, look forward to seeing you nail it, good luck.

Hi Edward,

Trouble is I don't have a flash - here goes ....  Your last bit of advice had me buying a 300 F2.8 polarizer.  Now it's a flash and 100 macro! ;)  My wife may grow to dislike you! ;D

Anyway, since I just bought the 70-200 F2.8 II and am waiting for my iOptron 3302B SkyTracker, I think I'll tuck your advice away for now, you understand.  It is fascinating how ideas appear and then the brain goes to work trying to fine tune in order to create something better.  That's my nature, I seldom get it right initially but I'm good at zeroing in by way of modifications.

I'm thinking life is too short.  I hunted for a place to post these shots but didn't succeed so does anyone know the link I need to find to see similar shots and discussion on CR?

Thanks as always Edward!

Jack

I think you may want to create a rig to make your own water drops/streams.  That way you can control where they fall to help with focus, size, frequency, and framing.  That way you can shoot through a stream of similar water drops to capture it at the right moment with continuous shooting.  A little pump from an indoor water feature might help.
