Canon 6D or 7DMKII?
« on: February 26, 2013, 12:18:55 AM »
There is a lot of speculation out there about the rumored 7DMKII. That being said, I'm currently in the market for a pro-sumer camera and these are basically my two options (6D vs. 7DII). I know, "Why are you debating on a camera that doesn't exist?" Well that's where I come to you guys for help. Should I sit and be patient for a new pro-level cropped body, or just go with the entry level FF? I know that the 7D is known for it's fast AF points, but also not too fond of high ISO's. Then there's the 6D with a basic AF system, but very nice performance in high ISO's.

Shooting with a 60D, I mostly photograph cars, and some other small macro photography. Not much landscaping unless necessary.

I'm a big fan of 7D but given the choice, i'd take the 6D with its FF capability 9 out of 10 times.

1 of 10 times is for the extra reach and fast for for my 2nd body if and when required :)

Cheers

They're two very different cameras aimed at very different uses. If its moving fast, getting the frame at the exact right moment and in perfect focus are the most important factors to look for in a body. If its stationary, timing and focus aren't difficult, so sensor performance is the most important factor to look for in a body.

The rumours for the 7D mk II suggest it will be more of the same - crop, very fast frame rate, very fast/good AF with great tracking, and for something which isn't a 1 series camera, very solid build. In other words, if you have crop glass that you want to use, or you want a 'cheap' body which can shoot action well (in other words, something in the ball park of a 1D X/5D3 in terms of AF/FPS, but not IQ) , then the 7D series is a much better buy than the 6D.

But if you're prepared to skimp on everything that makes the 7D series great in the world of crop cameras for single frame picture quality (slower/static subjects), then the 6D with its full frame sensor is a much better bet (even if Canon come out with a new killer APS-C sensor, this generation of FF will be better).

If your car shots are static and you're not tied to EF-S glass, I'd recommend the 6D.

It's actually pretty simple. If you need the AF performance and fps, go for the 7D. If you need the DR and quality and want to get rid of the cropfactor, go for the 6D. If you need all of this, the 5D MkIII will be the way to go. :)

I would go for 6D for couple reasons:
1. It does exist
2. Cleaner image in higher ISO
Body: 1DX -- 5D III
Zoom: 24-70L II -- 70-200L f2.8 IS II
Prime: 40mm -- 85L II -- 135L -- 400L f2.8 IS II
